To not understand why the Duke and Duchess of Suffolk only came over for 4 days?

I just find this really odd. To fly all that way then only stay 4 days? Surely they had other family to visit, could have made a bit of a holiday of it. I can&t imagine 2 long flights with toddlers that close together - it would be exhausting!

If it's any consolation OP Harry could be releasing a book which will most definitely have Mumsnet in a tizz for a good while. Bide your time, you'll have ample material for threads!

I'm not sure that's a book I'd enjoy, but maybe I should give it a try.

You can’t really catch up with people who’re ignoring you..

Are all their family and friends really ignoring them? That seems unlikely.

Harry really wouldn't have married one of your 'wonderfully English' daughters

Of course he would have. Two
of them turned him down.

I didn’t say they were but apparently some of them are.

Surely a more interesting question would be why do you have a monarchy? Do you really feel these people, ie Charles, William, etc are better and more able and suitable than you and deserve to be entitled to huge amounts of money, land etc? I really find that opinion hard to understand in a western sort of democracy?

Sort of re the aforesaid monarchy, house of lords etc. Truthfully there's probably an argument against first past the post elections too as it leaves so many people feeling they've no representation , pretty accurately eg look at the ukip party as compared to say lib Dems, I've no time for ukip but their representation in parliament compared to votes got could be argued to be undemocratic.

I just find it odd, that you've got a fairly well educated population and yet accept or maybe don't see a lot of democratic deficits in your systems .

Re original op, I think fair play to Harry and Meghan, they seem to be looking after their children, not feeling need to virtually apologize for an understandably bored four year olds behaviour...

@saoirse31

You've missed the point. The UK, along with all the places that QE still reigns over are functionally republics. There is therefore nothing to gain and a fair bit to lose by replacing the monarchy with a greasy suit who would probably interfere with politics.

All those countries could instead have been ones enslaved to a document written by dead white men who believed in gun ownership, or perhaps ones in which (leastways till recently) the local RCC archbishop said what went but I don't think either would have been preferable or more democratic.

The Royal Family are petrified of the Sussexes being too popular. They were not invited to certain events, and the Balcony events. I can understand them returning home. The Cambridge's didn't attend their niece's birthday party, strange. Kate is in awe of Meghan's ability to interact with people, give speeches etc. The Cambridge's have certainly upped their game, in response to the Sussexes, so that is good. William would NEVER have done his Big Issue thing without his brother snapping at his heels. The Prince of Wales hosting SCD at the Palace would also never have happened. It's all good. Until we get rid of the lot of them!

This post is HILARIOUS!!!
Thank you for making me laugh on a Sunday morning.

William has done the big issue ‘thing’ for years by way of honoring his mums work with the homeless. It’s nothing new.

And the Cambridges were in Cardiff at the time of the Birthday party representing the Queen. An engagement that had probably been planned for the Jubilee long before MM was even pregnant.

And Kate in awe of Meghan? Nope. I’m quite sure very few women would be in awe of any other woman who did the Burger advert she did.

antelopevalley · 12/06/2022 19:00

@TomPinch Prince Charles has a long history of interfering on political matters.

antelopevalley · 12/06/2022 19:01

The issue with William "selling" the Big Issue was the pretence he was undercover.

Here here

So it’s not ok for people to have opinions on people they don’t know such as Harry and Meghan “based on nothing” (apart from their actions and words) but it’s ok for you to have an opinion on people you don’t know based on nothing at all (if you claim nothing need to be said).

Are you calling people on this thread racist?

I doubt very much we’d have known about it if the person who was desperate for his five minutes of fame hadn’t leaked his story to the press.

antelopevalley · 12/06/2022 19:59

"dragging race into everything" invariably means the person saying it is racist.
It is a dog whistle phrase.

@TomPinch Prince Charles has a long history of interfering on political matters.

He's not the head of state, which is the point. He can say what he likes.

antelopevalley · 12/06/2022 20:56

He is standing in for the Queen so often now that it is very unwise.

antelopevalley · 12/06/2022 20:56

He is standing in for the Queen so often now that it is very unwise.

But this proves my point. When he opened Parliament and gave the Queen's Speech he didn't ad lib, did he?

TomPinch · 12/06/2022 21:37

I'll add that I'm sure that when Charles becomes king he will keep his opinions to himself or, if he finds that uncongenial, abdicate so that the crown can pass to William.

I guess I get a little annoyed that it's become accepted wisdom that the UK is undemocratic because it has a monarchy and an unwritten constitution. It's a very simple and flexible system actually: 1. Parliament has supreme lawmaking power and 2. to govern, a government must have majority support in Parliament. The Tories are a wretched lot but they would probably still be there under a PR system - just like their equivalents were in Aus and NZ for most of the last decade. There's a reason why there hasn't been any revolution, putsch or coup d'état, ie, political breakdown, in the UK or similar countries since 1688.

antelopevalley · 12/06/2022 23:33

@TomPinch He didn't ad-lib at the Queen's Speech!!!
Of course not.
That is not the definition of politically neutral.

I do not think he is capable of being politically neutral over years. But anyway we know a lot of his political views alraedy.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/06/2022 07:48

I'm sure that when Charles becomes king he will keep his opinions to himself

Probably best to keep your fingers crossed on that one, TomPinch ... some think it unlikely, but time will tell

antelopevalley · 13/06/2022 12:43

I do not think he will be able to resist getting involved. He thinks his opinion is extremely important.

antelopevalley · 13/06/2022 12:43

He is only saying what the vast majority of people are thinking which is why its down to a pitiful possible 10 people now and even thats being challenged

antelopevalley · 13/06/2022 14:42

I agree with his view on this occasion. But that is besides the point.
