To not understand why the Duke and Duchess of Suffolk only came over for 4 days?

I just find this really odd. To fly all that way then only stay 4 days? Surely they had other family to visit, could have made a bit of a holiday of it. I can&t imagine 2 long flights with toddlers that close together - it would be exhausting!

Don't think any "other family" would have been particularly keen to see them after their revelations.

I wonder if he met any of his Spencer relatives. They seem to got off lightly revelation-wise.

Yes, I included the Spencers in 'other family'

Two white-supremacist podcasters said Prince Harry should be “judicially killed for treason” for marrying Meghan Markle and called their son, 3-year-old Archie, “an abomination that should be put down,” a British court has heard.

This is a current case in a British court.

Wtf?!

YABU and incredibly nosey & prurient. Get a life rather than speculating on the lives of strangers.

I suppose you could say nosey - although I saw it as a more general question as to why people would only stay 4 days after having travelled a long way. But prurient?? I've not asked anything about their sex life!! I do have a life thanks, but sometimes I wonder about things.

God people seriously need to take a moment and get a life. Meghan would be blamed whether she took a week, a month, or a few days. I’m honestly shocked the war in Ukraine or cost of living crisis hasn’t been blamed on her yet. What’s killing the royal family isn’t the antichrist Meghan or her ‘puppet’ Harry it’s the pathetic over analysis and picking over minor bollocks that the rest of the world sees for what it is. And I’m sure we will see for what it is in a documentary in 10-20 years time thinking ‘wow - how did a hate campaign that stood on nothing but minor insurrections (that Kate does and is praised for but that’s by the by) trump an actual nonce in the royal family’. It’s not even that cleverly done. Sorry for the rant but it never fails to shock me how ridiculous this obsession is. Like truly get a hobby.

I already have a hobby. But I was just curious about why someone would travel all that way for only 4 days. Lots of posters have answered that for me. I wasn't criticising them. They can do as they like, I doubt they care what I think!

There could be many reasons like

  • Harry usually plays polo on a Sunday
-maybe they wanted to get back in time for Archie to go to school on Monday
  • they always intended to leave after the birthday party and a meeting with the Queen
  • they found it stressful being booed so legged it
-maybe they've been away for so long that they want to build up the length of trips until they are more enjoyable ? -maybe they generally meet in the US. We saw Eugenie at the Super Bowl with Harry and there was nothing in the press beforehand. Similarly the Cambridge family are able to go abroad and we hear about it after the face eg they went to James Middleton's wedding in the South of France.

You can track private jet flights as they are public record and you'd see that rich people take them like we takes tubes and buses- remember that Friends episode where Monica goes on a date with a billionaire and he flies her to Italy for dinner ? Having your own space and being able to fly with assistants etc is going to be much easier than wrangling young kids in economy.

All good points, thank you

I wonder if they spent time with Charles and William during their visit? It seems unlikely as they both would have been busy with jubilee celebrations.

It was Eugenie who lived in Frogmore cottage but I read a story saying she had moved to Portugal recently.

Yes, I kind of thought they would stay after the events were over so they could see more of Charles and William.

I’m not sure why this is any of my business. And they flew on a private jet, not Ryanair. I doubt travelling was that exhausting.

I didn't say it was any of your business. I just said I didn't understand something.

I went to the North York Moors this weekend. Yes, for just two days. It's crazy, isn't it? What was I thinking?

(It's stunning by the way. I'd totally recommend it. Even for longer stays!!)

How long did it take to get there and did you have lots of family to visit there?

About as odd as judging the travel habits of complete strangers?

I'm not judging their travel habits, I'm being curious about them! Why would I care what their travel habits are??

Yes exactly. People care more about whether people in the family talk to Harry and Meghan than what Prince Andrew did and the £12 million pay-offs by the taxpayers (yes the Queen paid it, but it came from our pockets).
It is truly crazy.

I can be curious about one thing and also strongly dislike another at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive.

I think they just wanted to see the family during a celebratory time and they didn't come to make it all about them. I think they did it perfectly, not that it is any of my business. The press got some shots of Meghan through the window enjoying being with the nieces and nephews. I was glad to see that and didn't want more information. The family were pleased to see them.

Mark Steel (comedian) said in his standup show that the press had told them to F off and then acted all indignant when they left. I think whatever they do will seem wrong to the press. I say just get on with staying in love and raising the children and enjoying life. They are doing well especially as neither of them had an ideal childhood, did they.

I also married a foreigner and went to live abroad for a while. We would visit, we were welcomed, and then we'd go back again. It's a normal way to visit your family when you're currently living abroad.

I have to say when I visit family abroad I would hate to cram it into such a small amount of time - it would really stress me out! And that's not even with a long flight!

I have no idea if half the country hate them. But why would they care. It doesn't affect them in the privacy of their house.

Similarly to Internet bullying it cannot physically harm you inside of your house, doesn't make it less unpleasant.

Obviously I have no idea if they care, I'd assume they do as the headlines drove them out of the country.

The British public cancelled their netflix subscriptions in droves over their show.

The American public is also canceling their netflix subscriptions in droves. It has nothing to do with Harry and Megan, and much to do with how bad their streaming offerings have become.

UndertheCedartree · 10/06/2022 20:30

Fairislefandango · 10/06/2022 15:14

Who cares? I seriously doubt 'half the country' hate them. Most of us probably give them little thought. If I were going to devote any thought to the royal family (unlikely), it certainly wouldn't be to ponder the duration of one of their many trips. I don't hate them - they are just an anachronistic irrelevance.

Just to pre-empt the 'Well why bother commenting on the thread?' comments- I have no interest in the RF, but I am kind of fascinated by the public's weird, obsessive interest in them.

Hmm...well I find your fascination a bit weird! Wondering about how 'the other half live' has been something people have always been curious about. Not sure an idle thought could be classed as obsessive interest?

I cancelled mine as did my daughters because of Netflix involvement with Harry and Meghan. We don’t live in the States or the Uk.

It's pick, pick, pick at these two all the time.

People complained when they left. They criticized them when they got into bed with the media - as if the remainder of that family hasn't; the mistake they made was to do so openly rather than a manipulative campaign behind the scenes. They're lambasted for keeping their kids hidden from view, no doubt because they don't want them to face the same level of public scorn as they do themselves. Now there are questions as to why they've flown fly over here - presumably at his Granny's behest, only to be publicly shunned by his petulant brother (they're both as bad as each other) and walked out of a church service to a chorus of boos and jeers. And people express even the slightest surprise that they've flown home early?

In the face of palpable hostility like that I suspect most people would want to place themselves at one remove. Just what have they done that is so unforgivably awful? More than one of them has given ill-advised interviews to the media. Nor is it an absolute that 100% of what they said was lies. The notion of the Windsors as racist isn't exactly a stretch, they have documented form for it.

I'm not a supporter of royalty or the hereditary system. I'd vote against the lot of them tomorrow if I could. I'm not a supporter of one Windsor personality against another personality - I couldn't give a fig about any of them - but these two have been treated poorly for behaviour in which one or another of them has indulged over the years and never experienced similar censure. Yes, that includes the repulsive second son of the current incumbent.

I don't blame this couple for G'ingTFO. I would have, too. My only surprise was that Meghan was ever seen again on UK soil after that, nor would I be expect ever to see her here again in the future. And I wouldn't blame her in the slightest.

Well, I have to say I don't really read royal news as it all just seems like speculation. Maybe they care about all that, I don't know. I find that hard to understand. I just thought they would want to come over and see family and friends, but as posters have pointed out maybe their friends and family prefer to visit them in sunny California.

They're rich enough that they can fly whenever they want this is not going to be a once in however many years visit it would be for normal people. Also with nannies, staff and a private plane, its not the huge exhausting trip it would be for normal people

Thank you for taking my question at face value and answering it!

So many posters like to invent back stories as to why someone asked a question and go off on tangents!

I would have thought that the type of security that they wanted was for the 4 days of Jubilee and required them to stay on royal properties like Frogmore. If they wanted to go out to a restaurant to socialise then that wouldn't be "work" so they'd have to organise private security and they believe that it's inadequate while in the UK.

I see lots of posts on Relationships which can be summarised as "my mum is toxic and pisses me off but I am able to cope for a weekend once a year " and 4 days is probably as long as they could stand it.

Yes, I see what you mean

The UK is hardly their 'happy place'. Read through this thread and you get the picture.

It's like Christmas with the family. They showed up. Did the obligatories. Visited with Gran and left.

Happens every year all over the Christmas celebrating world. Think on your own families folks.

I'm not a Royalist but I wish these actual humans some happiness.

And some bods on here need a hobby that isn't hating.

I wish them happiness too.

The British Media will destroy the reputation of the Royal Family worldwide.

I don’t believe The Source who disparaged the Queen by saying she refused to have a photo with her grandchild and that William and Kate refused to allow their kids to meet their cousins.

It is disgraceful that the British Media insists on painting the Royal Family as a bunch of racists who will punish innocent kids for having a drop of black blood. That they will shun them and not even consider being seen with them.

How does the British Media think the world will interpret the Queen refusing to have a photo with one of her grandchild or grandkids who happen to be the only ones with a mixed race background. What could possibly be the Queen’s reasons when she has taken photos and publicised with her other grandkids? The world will simply conclude that she does not want to be associated with her mixed race grandchild.

Already they prevented Archie from being titled a prince.

I am no fan of the Royal Family but this nonsense lies from a source is very damaging. They think they are embarrassing Harry and Meghan but instead they are shaming the Royal Family.

But it is normal protocol as far as I understand it that Archie was not styled a prince.

We don't know if any of these rumours are true though, it's all hearsay fed to us by the press. Maybe the queen was photographed with Lily but H&M didn't want it published 🤷‍♀️ We don't know because we weren't there.

Yes, couldn't the Queen have asked for the photos to be kept private. Although why would it matter if one photo was published anyway?

They were sat the the back with the cousins at the service and it wouldn't have made good tv being seen to have people shouting boo when they left.

They were in the 2nd row. The working royals were in the front row. I may be wrong but I can't imagine they would care that they weren't in the front row?
