To think that the NHS had lost the plot over breastfeeding?

www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-10892531/NHS-accused-putting-babies-harm-advice-trans-women-wanting-breastfeed.html

It feels like some kind of bizarre experiment - except it's babies who are being used for affirmation.

Am I being gaslit here?

It’s insane and obscene. That poor baby should be taken in to care. That’s a man with a fetish - not a mother.

ForestFae · 10/06/2022 08:59

Scaremongering - plenty of women take Domperidone, I did and it was a regular thing in the NICU as loads of us had rubbish supplies due to early traumatic birth. Domperidone is widely used and has been for a long time.

TinaYouFatLard · 10/06/2022 08:59

Just why? Why take any risk? Babies and powerful drugs should not be used in the same sentence.

SatinHeart · 10/06/2022 09:00

Loads of women get refused domperidone for low milk supply 😡

GeorgiaMcGraw · 10/06/2022 09:02

I don't understand using a drug that can negatively impact a baby, particularly the baby's heartbeat. Then you get to the fact that this article is talking about the male parent taking it to produce something that has not been proved to actually sustain a baby, not mother's milk, and it's just awful. Not "scaremongering" to want to protect the most vulnerable from harm, and you don't get more vulnerable than a newborn.

JustTheOneSwan · 10/06/2022 09:03

YANBU
The comparisons excuse is just that. These people are also taking strong cross sex hormones to assist transition.

Flymetothezoom · 10/06/2022 09:04

The key thing here is women take it not men. Women produce milk to nourish a baby, what are these men producing?

But you are a woman who presumably was not also taking cross sex hormones. There's no comparison.

The concerns about HRT is different to concerns about Domperidone. The article basically is scaremongering about Domperidone, which is unfounded. Concerns about trans people breastfeeding for different reasons (hormone therapy being one) is a completely different argument.

That's a bit transphobic - TWAW too, why did you say women and not cis women to differentiate? They're all the same, after all.

BobbinHood · 10/06/2022 09:24

YANBU and it also contributes to the demonisation of formula which affects women who need or choose to use it. It’s extremely self indulgent and that’s not a good trait in a parent.

Hallyup89 · 10/06/2022 09:27

I would hope that most transwomen will be intelligent enough to understand that male bodies cannot produce milk in quantity or quality enough to nourish an infant, and refuse to allow their child to be the focus of this batshit experiment.

Manekinek0 · 10/06/2022 09:30

Have studies been done on this? Surely you could take samples of breast milk from transwomen and check them against samples from women? I have read an article in new scientist about breast milk production in transwomen but there never seems to be any information in them about the amount of hormones passed to the baby nor if the nutritional composition has been changed.

Are you not in the UK or was it many years ago. The below is a screenshot from current NHS advice.

4 years ago, UK. It’s very common in the NICU, where breastmilk matters more because of the risk of NEC.

WandaWomblesaurus · 10/06/2022 09:41

Given a percentage of Transpeople are also going the DIY hormone route (sizeable Reddit forums on DIY hormones) - how can they know what is safe or not regarding what is getting passed into a baby's body via a biological male who is taking hormones and domperidone?

Also why aren't men generally being encouraged to breastfeed when their wives can't?

yourestandingonmyneck · 10/06/2022 09:46

It's ridiculous. Self indulgent and ridiculous and I'm astounded it's happening.

People need to wake up.

slashlover · 10/06/2022 09:48

So the NHS are not advising this, they are linking to an independent support site which says this? It's also not actually available on the NHS either? The two examples given are from America and Australia, so also not on the NHS.

luxxlisbon · 10/06/2022 09:51

*An NHS England spokesperson said the link to La Leche's advice on its chestfeeding guidance page was to an 'independent, non-profit support site' and added does not reflect NHS policy.

'Nowhere does it say it is available on the NHS,' they said.*

So what exactly is the woke NHS guidance?

A hugely inflammatory article backed up by zero facts it seems.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/06/2022 09:54

Domperidone is used all the time. For babies with reflux. We used to suggest it for mums on neonatal unit years ago but don't think they will prescribe for that any more. Scaremongering!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/06/2022 09:57

And I object to women being referred to as Cis women. I am a woman plain and Simple.

LizzieSiddal · 10/06/2022 10:00

The NHS can’t support real women in this country to BF but hey, as long as the men are ok.

It is very rarely prescribed on NICU. Never for term babies. It's not licensed in the US because it causes cardiac arrhythmia. It is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers as per screenshot below.

The NHS links to the La Leche guidance. Guidance which is wrong or ideologically driven has no place on our national health service website.
