To think that the NHS had lost the plot over breastfeeding?

www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-10892531/NHS-accused-putting-babies-harm-advice-trans-women-wanting-breastfeed.html

It feels like some kind of bizarre experiment - except it's babies who are being used for affirmation.

Am I being gaslit here?

@Clymene idk where you got the screen shot from, but it was recommended to me by my NHS gp in 2020 (she couldn't prescribe it so sent me to a consultant). I look know other people who took it on the NHS too.

From the NHS website. As @InChocolateWeTrust said, it's prescribed in extremis.

LooseGoose22 · 10/06/2022 11:00

I'll use whatever term I like thanks very much.

But you'll be corrected every time, as you should be, by anyone with a brain (who can be bothered to).

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 10/06/2022 11:01

Well you learn something new everyday!
Quite sad that I very much struggled to breastfeed my two and was never offered any help via the NHS, zilch! Even though they are now teens, I will forever feel like a shit mum because of that.

This is where I got the screenshot, you will need to scroll down.

Interesting about the use of the drug in NCUs, we were all feeding donated breast milk so perhaps no need to prescribe - I was wondering if there was a bit of a NHS postcode lottery going on.

purpleboy · 10/06/2022 11:02

It's pretty grim and it's all about the male persons wants rather than the benefit and safety of the baby, honestly anyone who even thinks this is a good idea shouldn't be having children.
It's a very different scenario between those who chose to do it for some kind of validation and those who have to do it through necessity.

ForestFae · 10/06/2022 11:03

LemonSwan · 10/06/2022 10:58

Sorry to hear that Forest.

I should have been clear it’s less about the c - more the liquid morphine we all used a lot for the first few days and lower amounts until end of week 1.

Did you have that and low supply? Because if so that’s my armchair theory out the window 🤷‍♀️

Yeah I had liquid morphine. But I also had a premature birth and needed a blood transfusion, both of which can badly affect supply so your theory might work for full term births maybe?

milkmaiden · 10/06/2022 11:04

But NHS advice is always correct and if you have a different opinion you are anti-science and an anti-vaxxer.

LuckyAmy1986 · 10/06/2022 11:04

I knew I wouldn't get an answer!

LuckyAmy1986 · 10/06/2022 11:06

FairyLightPups · 10/06/2022 10:37

I'll use whatever term I like thanks very much. Again more scaremongering, the side effects are incredibly minimal. It's safe.

@FairyLightPups so you are going to continue to call @Theluggage15 cis even though she clearly finds it offensive? Just wondering, if a transwoman told you to just call them woman because they find the term trans offensive, would you oblige and just call them woman or would you say I will use whatever term I like? I THINK I know the answer but just want to hear it from you?

Mytoddlerisamazing · 10/06/2022 11:06

@Clymene @dolorsit

That link primarily relates to the use of domperidone as an anti sickness drug, and you conveniently failed to screenshot the comment near the top of the page:

Domperidone is sometimes used to increase milk supply. Your doctor may prescribe it if you're having trouble breastfeeding but only if other things have not worked

Clearly you check the latch/do some pumping/have the tongue tie cut first. After that domperidone is frequently prescribed.

LemonSwan · 10/06/2022 11:07

Ahh just catching up.

@ForestFae I see your little one was in NiCu - that sounds really stressful and sorry you had to go through that. Really glad you got drugs to assist lactation.

That’s really the point I was trying to make. Drugs work - it seems to me some which weren’t even prescribed for that purpose. So why are they not more standard for all women struggling with supply.

To me this isn’t even about the trans thing - it’s why if it’s ok for trans women why is it not available to more women.

GrinAndVomit · 10/06/2022 11:09

When the sustenance of a baby is less important the the validation of a male who wants to be a woman, we know we’re in deep shit.

Mytoddlerisamazing · 10/06/2022 11:11

@dolorsit

Re the post code lottery, it might be that a bit too. My friend up north was prescribed by her gp, whereas mine had a policy that you had to go via a consultant. NHS consultant would have taken months so I spent ££££ going private, which many women don't have the option to do.

milkmaiden · 10/06/2022 11:12

ForestFae · 10/06/2022 08:59

Scaremongering - plenty of women take Domperidone, I did and it was a regular thing in the NICU as loads of us had rubbish supplies due to early traumatic birth. Domperidone is widely used and has been for a long time.

It increases production of breastmilk via milk ducts in women.

It increases production of via _ in men?

milkmaiden · 10/06/2022 11:13

GrinAndVomit · 10/06/2022 11:09

When the sustenance of a baby is less important the the validation of a male who wants to be a woman, we know we’re in deep shit.

The medical industry has always put the gratification of men and the making of profits above children's health. It's just that you're only just noticing.

BorgQueen · 10/06/2022 11:13

Women produce breastmilk specifically tailored to their baby, slightly different for boys than girls, changes if they are ill.
A Man might produce some chemical nipple discharge, it certainly won’t sustain a baby.
It’s child abuse plain and simple, purely for sick gratification.

riesenrad · 10/06/2022 11:14

Do you use offensive racist terms as well? If not, why do you think it's ok to offend most of the female population? We are not cis-women, we are women.

Mytoddlerisamazing · 10/06/2022 11:18

@riesenrad

You don't speak for "most of the female population"

(Tbh I suspect that most of the female population neither knows nor cares re the use of the term cis)

GlitteryGreen · 10/06/2022 11:20

I don't understand how maternity care in the UK is so baby-focused that often the mother is just regarded as the vessel and not cared for well, and yet for this they're willing to advocate using this drug just purely for the benefit of the adult????

It's unbelievable.

Nothing convenient about it.

It's very rarely prescribed now and only works if the reasons for poor supply are caused by low prolactin. None of the examples you cite would be helped by domperidone. See multiple threads:

That's fine for a woman to do. It's just about that.

Let's not enable males to attempt to do this for fun.*

Given it doesn't work for a high percentage of women who actually have the biology to do so and have often given birth so loads of hormones, there isn't a lot of value in a male attempting this.

It also needs a lot of input when a mother may be extremely exhausted after birth and frankly needs the input herself.

We also don't know what impact the hormone blockers has on the excretions the male can make and so the baby.

*or a different word

FUCKINGSEAN · 10/06/2022 11:22

BasicBinaryBltch · 10/06/2022 09:22

That's a bit transphobic - TWAW too, why did you say women and not cis women to differentiate? They're all the same, after all.

What are you talking about? "plenty of women take Domperidone" is true, why should she need to specify if they are cis or trans?

WarriorN · 10/06/2022 11:23

That's fine for a woman to do. It's just about that.

Should say>> That's fine for a woman to do. It's NOT just about that.

Erm no I suspect most of them feel exactly the same way but you just don't know or hear about it in real life because "transphobic" and they don't want to get fired or god knows what else
