It feels like some kind of bizarre experiment - except it's babies who are being used for affirmation.

Am I being gaslit here?

How revolting. It sounds like a fetish. @FairyLightPups don’t use the term cis, I’m not a subset of my sex. And how selfish to take a powerful drug that can cause nasty side effects in babies so you can feel good.

I'll use whatever term I like thanks very much. Again more scaremongering, the side effects are incredibly minimal. It's safe.

I remember reading about the fact that men could stimulate the production of milk decades ago, in the same way as women who hadn't breastfed after their baby was born or who had stopped, or who had adopted, could also stimulate lactation.. It's not a new thing.

This, people have just got their knickers in a twist because the word 'trans' is tacked onto the start of it. This is not a new phenomenon.

InChocolateWeTrust · 10/06/2022 10:39

Gross that I'm in a lesbian relationship and that my cis female wife wants to feed our baby too? Ah, homophobia dressed up.

Presumably pp meant they find it a bit gross to use all these drugs to artificially stimulate breast milk production. Nothing to do with your lesbian relationship Hmm

Clymene · 10/06/2022 10:40

Mothers shouldn't take any drugs when breastfeeding that may harm their baby unless they absolutely have to. Some mothers in NICU take it because their milk hasn't yet come in.

Stimulating breast milk production in a woman who hasn't given birth is not for the baby's benefit, it's for hers.

I couldn't give a shit about her sexuality.

So is it gross when a woman with low milk supply uses it? Was it gross I used domperidone for my preemies?

Just out of curiosity, why can't your wife just bottle feed if she wants to be involved with the feeding?

My lactation consultant in the NICU said with the exception of a handful of rare drugs known to be harmful, they’d almost always recommend breastfeeding even if the mother is taking medication. Antidepressants, antibiotics, painkillers etc, were all deemed fine.

Clymene · 10/06/2022 10:42

We have covered this topic extensively on here before incidentally. There are no studies which have examined the quality of the liquid men produce from their nipples following stimulation. We do know that none of them have ever produced anywhere near enough liquid of any quantity to match the amount a breastfed infant needs.

InChocolateWeTrust · 10/06/2022 10:43

Forestfae
Presumably you didnt need the full Newman goldfarb protocol to simulate pregnancy, because you had actually been through it?

No issue with women using domperidone with low supply, especially prem babies who can't tolerate formula well.

It's the process & cocktail of hormones required to stimulate lactation in a body that hasnt been pregnant that feels forced and unnecessary.

MenopausalMe · 10/06/2022 10:45

Males do not lactate normally so this should have had an ethics review before experimenting on babies like this.

Are there any scientific studies demonstrating this is safe and beneficial for the baby?

Mytoddlerisamazing · 10/06/2022 10:49

@Clymene idk where you got the screen shot from, but it was recommended to me by my NHS gp in 2020 (she couldn't prescribe it so sent me to a consultant). I look know other people who took it on the NHS too.

ForestFae · 10/06/2022 10:51

Barely any drugs are “recommended” during pregnancy or breastfeeding because it’s unethical to perform trials on pregnant women. The drugs I took for HG arent “recommended” but we know they’re safe as they’ve been used extensively for a long time.

Yodaisawally · 10/06/2022 10:51

I was prescribed it ten years ago, it hasn't been for years now though.

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 10/06/2022 10:53

Genuine basic question here but how does this actually work? Do men (trans or otherwise) have milk glands, milk ducts etc?

InChocolateWeTrust · 10/06/2022 10:54

To all the women who have taken domperidone, while it isnt recommended, it is much like omeprazole in babies, used off license where needed. Domperidone most commonly use is permitted in NICU for premature babies who don't tolerate formula well, sometimes it won't be offered/prescribed if local milk bank stocks are available this the need can be met another way.

I think most people on the thread aren't solely bothered about use of domperidone, but about the links to using a hormonal protocol to induce lactation in situations where it clearly isnt really necessary for anyone other than the TW wanting that experience (in most cases the baby has a mother on hand and able to lactate without a cocktail of hormones to simulate pregnancy).

Yes, everyone has milk ducts.

Yes any mammal with nipples can feed their young.

Yodaisawally · 10/06/2022 10:54

Actually sorry I'm wrong. DTs were also prescribed it for reflux, along with everything else. It's not prescribed for babies anymore.

Did sweet fa for me anyway.

InChocolateWeTrust · 10/06/2022 10:56

Redorangeyellowblack

I think that the hormones TW take lead to some breast development, include mammary tissue, thus the possibility that, with a complicated regime of hormones to simulate pregnancy, its possible for a biological male to lactate.

Hagiography · 10/06/2022 10:57

YANBU. No male who is taking hormones should be feeding a baby. When I think about what I avoided - onions! Cabbages! - in case it had deleterious effects on breastmilk, the idea that anyone can even consider this is horrifying.

FWIW, any female taking testosterone also shouldn't be feeding a baby, for obious reasons.

LemonSwan · 10/06/2022 10:58

ForestFae · 10/06/2022 10:36

I had a cesarean and had a crap supply.

Sorry to hear that Forest.

I should have been clear it’s less about the c - more the liquid morphine we all used a lot for the first few days and lower amounts until end of week 1.

Did you have that and low supply? Because if so that’s my armchair theory out the window 🤷‍♀️

FangsForTheMemory · 10/06/2022 10:58

BasicBinaryBltch · 10/06/2022 09:22

That's a bit transphobic - TWAW too, why did you say women and not cis women to differentiate? They're all the same, after all.

This whole site is transphobic. It's horrendous.

Clymene · 10/06/2022 10:58

Male breast structure on the left; female on the right.

Spot the differences?
