AIBU to not want to give baby an English name?

OneTonNoodles · 04/06/2022 16:14

I'm expecting, and we're discussing baby names.

DP likes traditional, common, English/ European names. His family is full of Elizabeth, Peter, David's.

I have a DS named Aryan from a previous relationship. I like unusual, uncommon, and would prefer an ethnic name that goes with DS.

I know they're not the same person so they don't need to match but I'd find Persephone and Keith as a sibset jarring.

I'm willing to compromise and choose an ethnic name that is also used in the West e.g. Nina, but DP is not having any of it.

His points are, 1. I got to name DS 2. We live in England. 3. He made 1 suggestion for an unusual name he was semi-ok with and I laughed at him. Therefore IABU.

I don't think I am because I said we can compromise.

What's your ethnic background? If you're wanting to name your dc in line with your own ethnicity, then that's fair enough, though I think you should have an equal say with your DH, whose opinions are also important.

If you're simply choosing an "ethnic" name because you think it's unusual and uncommon, then yabu.

Aryan? As in... Aryanism? I would've googled that before making it official

Sirzy · 04/06/2022 16:21

What is your heritage?

BattenburgDonkey · 04/06/2022 16:22

What is yours and your DHs heritage?

Aryan, or aaryan, or aryann (there a few spellings) is a fairly popular name.

Classicblunder · 04/06/2022 16:22

Whose surname is the baby getting? If yours, I would be minded to give him more of a say on the first name and vice versa

LemonPalmTree · 04/06/2022 16:22

I’m not sure Aryan is a name with great connotations so I’d probably let your OH pick this one

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2022 16:23

Yes @Simonjt but if the kid is white it changes everything

Agree, I have known a few Indian children called Aryan or variations thereof. Not one that I would have chosen personally but clearly it has different connotations for different people.

If a kid called Aryan came into my classroom and it was white I would definitely think it had nazi parents

Butterfly44 · 04/06/2022 16:25

Have both by using the middle name.

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2022 16:26

Not an issue if the kid is Indian @Mumwantingtogetitright

yellowsmileyface · 04/06/2022 16:27

If you're white British, I'd say it's cultural appropriation to give your baby an "ethnic" name because it sounds cool and unusual.

Can't you come up with a name that's unusual but not specifically borrowed from another language/culture?

I also think your husband is being unreasonable and stubborn for not being willing to compromise.

You work with children and think its appropriate to refer to children as it and think their parents are racist because a child doesn’t have a white british name. Lovely.

Agreed, but I don't think we know the ethnicity of the OP's dc yet, do we?

It’s a Persian name.

PeekAtYou · 04/06/2022 16:28

What is your ethnicity OP? If you were from South Asia then Aryan is a normal name like Peter and Anna is if you're white English.

Siepie · 04/06/2022 16:29

When you say you want an 'ethnic' name, do you mean one from your own ethnicity/culture or one from any non-English/European culture?

jamoncrumpets · 04/06/2022 16:29

Please google Aryanism @Simonjt

OneTonNoodles · 04/06/2022 16:30

Sorry I should have mentioned. I'm Indian, Ex is Indian, DS is Indian, and DP is white.

All born and raised in England.

I would bet it's a white person wanting an 'ethnic' name. Which is bordering on cultural appropriation.

redskyatnight · 04/06/2022 16:30

Perfectly fine to pick an ethnic name that reflects your or DH's ethnic background. (though you both still have to like the name).

I'd consider it odd to pick a name with particular connotations of an ethnic background if you didn't have any links with that background yourself.

Really?
You would jump to that conclusion immediately?
And you're a teacher!

As mixed heritage I would say anything goes, hopefully you'll light upon one both you and DP like.

SchoolThing · 04/06/2022 16:33

Aaryan/Aryan/Arian is incredibly common in Indian communities.
