Not sure it's an AIBU but could not find a topic to put his under if anyone has any ideas please report and asked to be moved.

Been feeling quite crap for a while with family issues, also have let myself go, but on a bit of weight, skin gone to shit, hardly ever doing make up living in old clothes basically just feeling meh.

Last three weeks had hair done, nails, facials etc bought some new clothes felt loads better about myself, today at work with DH we both have customers, he shouts me over to answer a question, and before I can even reply woman (about 65-70) says awwh your son is adorable (realise she is talking about DH cos I only have girls) My reply he is my husband hers reply did you have him young, I walked away DH explained I am 4 years older, apparently she felt bad her husband was embarassed, knocked all my confidence, wish I had replied is that your grandson about her husband because he was 50's or you should go back to specsavers cos your prescription was wrong!!

No sat here feeling like crap and whilst knowing I was never gonna look like 21-35 again feel like I have been crushed xx

Lunch with my 4 years younger sister. She told young, handsome, Italian waiter what she wanted. "Si madame, and for la mama?" 😅

axolotlfloof · 22/05/2022 07:29

Assistant in M and S referred to me as my Dad's wife. It made me boak a bit, but I suppose it is possible age wise.
My Dad just found it funny.

UnicornPug · 22/05/2022 08:08

In one weekend I was assumed to be my brother’s mother (he’s 3 years younger) my SILs mother and my Neices grandmother. 3 separate occasions, and people. I came home from that weekend feeling 100 years old. But you know what? I’m ok. So what if I look old for my age? I’ve got a family who love me and why should I give a shiny shit what others think? I could dye my hair, I could lose weight. But I’m actually happy and I don’t want to.
All of those people were way more embarrassed than I was. 😂

Cloud16 · 22/05/2022 10:19

I'm very short and a woman said to me at a children's football game 'Santa's not real btw, sorry if I'm bursting your bubble' while talking about Christmas to the other parents and me 😳 she thought I was 14!!

Everyone else knew I was an adult in my mid 20s. I think some people are just nuts.

When I was at university, say 18 or 19 and my mum & I were out together, people would ask my mum, “Are you two sisters?” to flatter my mum. We looked very much alike — but obviously she looked very much older than me.

I was always tempted to say SHE’S 33 YEARS OLDER FOR GOD’S SAKE!!!

A friend of mine has a sister 16 years younger than him. My mother's sister is 14 years older than her.

If there's only 14 years between you and your mother, it's not surprising they thought you were siblings, tbh.

fluffycereal · 22/05/2022 10:45

I still don't understand why a customer would immediately assume any relation between you other than colleagues

WisherWood · 22/05/2022 10:54

33 years oldER, not 33 years old with a daughter at university. That would be quite an achievement.

chocolatemademefat · 22/05/2022 10:59

I went out to lunch with my son and the waiter asked - can I get you ladies a drink while you’re looking at the menu. My son is a hairy arsed six footer built like a shit house wall. 😳

Fitbachick · 22/05/2022 11:18

DH, daughter aged 12 and I coming home from holiday on flight, had pre booked childrens meal for daughter. Daughter gets her meal and stewardess comes and puts down a kids meal in front of me. DH said excuse me my daughter already has a kids meal. Stewardess says yes but thats for your other child and points at me. DH was so gobsmacked he couldn’t say anything.

Because it's a family business.

Yeah, I just saw that I misread it!

Apologies.

Maytodecember · 22/05/2022 12:25

TBH as people get older it gets more difficult to age other people. I’ve never been good ( bloke I worked with when I was about 30 kept saying guess my age, I hedged it knowing I was rubbish. I was going to say 59? 60? He was 42) now I’m getting on a bit I’m even more useless at guessing ages.
Ignore the woman’s comments.

TrixieMixie · 22/05/2022 17:51

A man on a train once assumed I was the teenage son of my best friend. We’re the same age - our late twenties at the time - and I’m female (I did have a short haircut.)

Powerflower22 · 22/05/2022 18:20

I’d be pissed off … my partner is 5 years younger than me and as I get older it’s a bit of a sore spot for me … although a few years ago a neighbours 6 year old little girl knocked on my door and said “is your dad home” 😂 she was talking about my partner, really made me laugh and a friend who is 6 years my junior was in hospital and I went to visit her and the lady in the next bed said to her later “your daughters really nice” my friend was furious and said she must have dementia 😂… it happens, and obviously ridiculous at times. Try not to take it to heart! X

Blossomtoes · 22/05/2022 18:30

Five years is nothing @Powerflower22. My bloke’s nearly five years younger than me and is almost always assumed to be older.

GreendaleFive · 22/05/2022 18:38

I think there's a good chance dementia was involved.

I once had an elderly woman ask if my sons were twins. One was a toddler with longish hair, sat up and chatting away...and the other was clearly a young baby! She obviously just saw a double buggy and was confused. It was really clear they were not the same age.

Wanted to respond, but the profanity from the original post turned me off.

ineedsun · 22/05/2022 18:43

Lady over the road thought DH was my dad, we’ve lived here 15 years 🤷‍♀️

Mind you, she also told me I’m not blessed with height (which whilst true was pretty rude and shows me that her opinion should just be ignored). Some people are just rude and shouldn’t be listened to

quicklybeendrivenmad · 22/05/2022 18:51

Thanks all feel better today, been working on how to feel better, and for those who asked about how they knew I worked there, the T shirts with company name kinda give it away, not sure what profanity was in my OP, but once again thanks to you all for making me feel better and your support xx

Once I was looking round a flat for myself. My fiance came along with me.
The estate agent said 'aww, you brought your dad with you.'
I said 'he's my partner.' The estate agent said 'sorry mate, you looked really old there for a minute.' I said 'you're just digging your hole even deeper.'
I shouldn'tve took the flat lol.

Another time I was getting some photos developed. The woman said 'Is that your bloke?' I said 'It's my mother.' Why would she even have said anything anyway? Confused

Nowadays I'm the one that gets assumed to be a younger friend's mum.
What can you do? Too much hard living lol.

Forget it. People are weird! A midwife once commented on a photo of us as a family on display. She said I thought you have 3 children, I said I do, she said whose the other one next to your Mr Sum… I said that is meeeeee !!! I still laugh so much because I do not look young for my age. She’s needs specs I think.

Gloating about looking sooooooo young on a thread about being thought your husband’s mother, is not a good look.
