Not sure it's an AIBU but could not find a topic to put his under if anyone has any ideas please report and asked to be moved.

Been feeling quite crap for a while with family issues, also have let myself go, but on a bit of weight, skin gone to shit, hardly ever doing make up living in old clothes basically just feeling meh.

Last three weeks had hair done, nails, facials etc bought some new clothes felt loads better about myself, today at work with DH we both have customers, he shouts me over to answer a question, and before I can even reply woman (about 65-70) says awwh your son is adorable (realise she is talking about DH cos I only have girls) My reply he is my husband hers reply did you have him young, I walked away DH explained I am 4 years older, apparently she felt bad her husband was embarassed, knocked all my confidence, wish I had replied is that your grandson about her husband because he was 50's or you should go back to specsavers cos your prescription was wrong!!

No sat here feeling like crap and whilst knowing I was never gonna look like 21-35 again feel like I have been crushed xx

Good on you for getting yourself out of your rut. I'm going to take you for inspiration. Don't let some daft old biddy, who's too vain to wear her specs, knock you back.

Furrbabymama87 · 21/05/2022 21:21

A neighbour asked me if I thought last summer was as hot as the summer of 1976. I was 33 and regularly told by others I look late 20s. He's a bit of an oddball so I just laughed it off.

I once dropped my purse in town and when someone saw me looking for it told me it was behind the counter in the supermarket.

The lady in the shop refused to give it to me as I looked different to my driving licence photo! I had just had a baby (looked knackered) and had different coloured hair.

I was so embarrassed.

So what happened next? Did you ever get it back?

fossilsmorefossils · 21/05/2022 21:26

When my nan had dementia she was told that her first great grandchild would be born within x monghs. A week later she asked my 55 yo mum how her pregnancy was going. My mum was pretty but had quite a lot of wrinkles for her age. The brain can make people foggy about ages.

BoDerek · 21/05/2022 21:27

My takeaway is that he was behaving like a kid by shouting over you and that’s why she assumed he was young. Nothing to do with how you looked.

IDreamOfTheMoors · 21/05/2022 21:29

When I was at university, say 18 or 19 and my mum & I were out together, people would ask my mum, “Are you two sisters?” to flatter my mum. We looked very much alike — but obviously she looked very much older than me.

I was always tempted to say SHE’S 33 YEARS OLDER FOR GOD’S SAKE!!!

CustardySergeant · 21/05/2022 21:36

KurriKawari · 21/05/2022 19:23

Well someone recently thought my 13 year old was my daughter!! People chat shit sometimes, best to move on.

Well who was your 13 year old?

oakleaffy · 21/05/2022 21:41

Weight , like it or not can make people look much “ Older” than they are.
Weight can be lost.
This pic is of a friend who was 70 when this pic was taken
She lost weight in her 40’s.
She also buys most of her clothes from Charity shops, and hardly wears makeup.
Zero cosmetic surgery.
Keeping active seems to bring a glow to people of any age. :)

This happened to a (perfectly normal-looking) friend of mine when she was 25. She went to the pub with her 28yo (but v young looking) boyfriend, who went to buy a pint and the barman said "I wouldn't normally serve you, son, but as you're with your mum I'll make an exception" 😂

These things happen- possibly the woman didn't have her glasses on or was confused. Please don't let it affect how you feel about yourself.

For some reason this has me properly sniggering. Hopefully it’s your story telling skills MangoMaddie rather than me being callous.

As someone has said though people are just dozy.

When my twins were about 6months old a small group of us were chatting - customers and staff - another sales assistant joined in & asked me when they were due.

Penguintears · 21/05/2022 22:21

People are weird. When I had a teeny newborn and a chunky two year old toddler I got asked TWICE by different 60/70 women if they were twins!

saleorbouy · 21/05/2022 22:26

I got refused alcohol at the till of a major supermarket while shopping with my wife, they lady on the til wanted to see my wife's ID as she looked too young.
Her insinuation was that I was buying drink for a minor. I thought she was joking but oh no she was deadly serious.
Neither of us had ID as I was 40 and DW early 30's.
We scanned all the shopping and I asked if they would accept DW credit card as payment .... of course. I explained that you have to be over 18 for credit so therefore we'd also have the bottle of wine with the weekly shopping.
Apparently they had an over 25 policy so still refused.
In the end we left the shopping bagged at the till and walked out.

I suppose some people can't judge age very well. Don't let it get you down, in your case she probably has crap eyesight.

Echobelly · 21/05/2022 22:33

Honestly I think it's more a comment on your DH looking young that you looking old? And as people said it's a bit of a batty comment, it's more likely her not seeing properly.

Echobelly · 21/05/2022 22:36

Also, that she says 'Did you have him young?' (also rather personal) suggests that she thinks you don't look old!

Had this happen to me. Gave me right fright. So lost weight and changed my hair haha

Notjustabrunette · 21/05/2022 22:50

When I was a teenager, an elderly man once thought my friend was my mum. I was mortified that I must look like a 10 year old! My friend thought it was hilarious! I’m seeing her next week, might bring it up. Looking back it was pretty hilarious.

BraveryBot9to5 · 21/05/2022 22:56

''adorable'' what. I feel like she was trying to hurt you.

MatildaJayne · 21/05/2022 23:05

My mum was mistaken for my dad’s mum once when she’d had a bit of a bad bubble perm. My dad thought it was hilarious, my mum less so. They were both in their 60s.

5128gap · 21/05/2022 23:16

When people get other peoples ages very wrong either way, it never means they really look the age they're mistaken for (flattering as it may be when the error is in your favour!)
It means the person has given you a cursory glance and drawn a conclusion based on multiple factors. It might be that you are dressed youthfully or maturely, or you are behaving in a way that makes you appear younger/older. I would say a significant part of her assumption was that it's a family business and DH called you over to help, so indicating seniority, ergo, mother. You might also look more mature in your work clothes than you do casually dressed.

mycatisannoying · 21/05/2022 23:20

Older women often do put their foot in it with this stuff, asking overweight women when the baby is due etc. I honestly would pay her no attention whatsoever. I'm sure you looked great. silly old bat

Easilystartled · 21/05/2022 23:34

This happened to me. Went out with a friend who is only 8 yrs younger than me and a salesman asked her if I was her mum as he also had some products for more mature skin.
it got me down for about a day and then I decided to do something about it. Grew my hair, started looking after my skin. Never felt better. It was a kick in the teeth at the time but a massive blessing now. Don’t give up op.

userxx · 21/05/2022 23:50

Years ago I took my friend to a hospital appointment, the doctor asked if I was her mum. We were both early 20's! Some people speak before thinking things through properly.

Sh05 · 22/05/2022 00:40

I was with a friend a few years ago who is a couple of years older than me, she's blessed with beautiful skin and I'm olive toned but have large dark freckles. We're early 40s but we met an acquaintance of hers who mistook me for her mum!
I still feel sore about it and it's been two years.
I've always felt so self conscious of the dark marks on my skin but never more so than that day.
Doesn't help that my youngest who's a toddler so no filter says mummy you have spots!

BearBibble · 22/05/2022 06:16

@Sh05 I have ALWAYS envied women with olive skin and freckles. I think it's a beautiful look.

iloveeverykindofcat · 22/05/2022 06:22

My neighbour thinks me, my mother and my best friend are all the same person. We look absolutely nothing like each other. He's almost blind and frequently at least somewhat drunk. It's likely nothing to do with you OP.

Same friend's dad used to be regularly mistaken for her boyfriend, from the time we were teenagers. He has always looked very young for his age. People used to tell her her slightly older boyfriend was hot. The mortification.
