Not sure it's an AIBU but could not find a topic to put his under if anyone has any ideas please report and asked to be moved.

Been feeling quite crap for a while with family issues, also have let myself go, but on a bit of weight, skin gone to shit, hardly ever doing make up living in old clothes basically just feeling meh.

Last three weeks had hair done, nails, facials etc bought some new clothes felt loads better about myself, today at work with DH we both have customers, he shouts me over to answer a question, and before I can even reply woman (about 65-70) says awwh your son is adorable (realise she is talking about DH cos I only have girls) My reply he is my husband hers reply did you have him young, I walked away DH explained I am 4 years older, apparently she felt bad her husband was embarassed, knocked all my confidence, wish I had replied is that your grandson about her husband because he was 50's or you should go back to specsavers cos your prescription was wrong!!

No sat here feeling like crap and whilst knowing I was never gonna look like 21-35 again feel like I have been crushed xx

I wouldn't trust her eyesight.

OTOH some men age really well and look younger than their partner with little age difference.

Piffle11 · 21/05/2022 18:34

Years ago we were getting some work done to the garden ready for a party for my 40th. A lot of the people involved couldn't believe that I was 40, very flattering, but I had always been told I looked young for my age (not anymore Grin). A couple of months later we attended a 70th birthday party, where a guest asked me if I was the birthday girl's sister… who he knew was in her 60s. Ouch.

MangoMaddie · 21/05/2022 18:38

This happened to a (perfectly normal-looking) friend of mine when she was 25. She went to the pub with her 28yo (but v young looking) boyfriend, who went to buy a pint and the barman said "I wouldn't normally serve you, son, but as you're with your mum I'll make an exception" 😂

These things happen- possibly the woman didn't have her glasses on or was confused. Please don't let it affect how you feel about yourself.

why would anyone going to your place of work assume you were mother and son anyway?

Mamai90 · 21/05/2022 18:45

I've been asked on two seperare occasions is my SIL my daughter. I'm 8 years older, but still!

But at the same time I've been told by loads of people that I don't look 40 when they hear my age. So try not to take it to heart. Next week you could be asked are you his daughter, people are strange!

TabithaTittlemouse · 21/05/2022 18:45

Is your place of work called quicklybeendrivenmad (real name) and sons?

Ignore it, she probably had her glasses on backwards.

KarenLovesRosario · 21/05/2022 18:45

@MistyRuins
Just glad I'm not the only one confused 🤔

ATadConfused · 21/05/2022 18:46

Aww don't take it personally.

people are a bit hopeless. My first thought was, did it sound like 'mum' when DH called to you?

My friend who is only 12 years older than me has often been assumed to be my mum & she doesn't even look her age, let alone older!

On the other hand, a bloke I met at physio last year, made a comment about me at least not having to go to work as I must be retired, but as a much younger bloke he was still working. I'm a year younger than him & he's a deluded twat. We both look early 50's. Such a shame at 35... just kidding, we are both early 50's.

TabithaTittlemouse · 21/05/2022 18:46

Opposite way around but people used to say my boyfriend was very good looking. It was my dad and I was absolutely disgusted!

KarenLovesRosario · 21/05/2022 18:50

@TabithaTittlemouse
Oh that's just awful 😳

EmotionalSupportWyrm · 21/05/2022 18:52

I had a work colleague who was 10yrs younger than me - lovely young man, I offered to pick him up from the dentist when he wasn't allowed to drive due to having anaesthesia - I heard one of the staff say "Mr X - your mum is here for you" 🤷🏼‍♀️

Onwards22 · 21/05/2022 18:53

your son is adorable" is a pretty weird thing to say about a grown adult man anyway! She was on a wind up or is just a bit odd herself!

I agree.

Don’t take this to heart OP.

Maybe she was trying to flatter you (or DH).

Figmentofimagination · 21/05/2022 18:56

I've had it on holiday at Disney World in Florida. A cast member thought me and DH were my sister's parents. She is 17 months younger than me and I was finally looking great for the first time in years as I had lost over 3 stone. Plus I was 28! Made me feel shit (though she did apologise). My sister found it hilarious.

romdowa · 21/05/2022 18:56

I was once asked if I was my brothers mother 😨😨 there's 6 years between us. I've also been asked if my father was my husband 🤣

RitaFaircloughsWig · 21/05/2022 18:59

people literally do not think - they just open their mouth and their brain has gone to its laziest and easiest conclusion.

Marty13 · 21/05/2022 19:00

OP, some people are just crap at telling someone's age. I've been asked if my kids are twins (they have 19month age difference, at an age where it's quite obvious, and look nothing alike !) I've also been asked if my son is my brother (utterly preposterous, I had them at 30 so I don't look like a teenager either !)

So yeah don't take it to heart, this says more about that lady than it says about you.

mintybobs · 21/05/2022 19:04

Please do not take this personally- people are incredibly stupid. I have two sons that are two years apart. When they were 2 and 4, I got asked if they were twins by a stranger when out and about. They were COMPLETELY different sizes. Please dont ascribe anything reflective about this to you when its often sheer stupidity!

Mummyratbag · 21/05/2022 19:05

My Dad was mistaken for my husband (he's 30 years older than me)
I was asked if remembered drinking a certain alcoholic drink in the 70s ...no I was under 10!
Mistaken for being pregnant more than once.

But also...
I was asked at a hospital appointment at 39 weeks pregnant (and enormous) if I was attending my post natal appointment (by a midwife)
Thought to be 22 when I was in my 40s (I cling to that one)
Often thought to be at least 10 years younger than I am.

Some people are just stupid (and have no filter).

Jojobees · 21/05/2022 19:06

A woman last year ruined my holiday and for quite a while my self confidence by asking if I was my 3 year olds grandmother.
I was 38 at the time.
she was really shocked when I said no. I’m his mum.
I totally understand why you are hurt.

Mummyratbag · 21/05/2022 19:06

Oh and MIL (who knows my age) asked if I remembered JFK being shot ( 7 years before I was born)

LoisLane66 · 21/05/2022 19:09

I have been mistaken for the sister of one of my sons, he was 18 at the time, I was 51- no kidding. I replied 'Either the lighting is bad in here or my son looks rough. On the same day the hotel manager said he only had a room with twin beds but could get them pushed them together for US 🤔😂 We were attending a wedding and he'd booked a room for me as he was staying with friends.
Some years later, my local station master always made me show my senior Railcard when I passed the barriers as he didn't believe I was over 60.
Fast forward another decade and I now look (and often feel) my age.
I put the earlier age mistakes down to having a good hair cut and never wearing make-up - still don't. I look after my skin and use SPF50 baby sun cream winter and summer.

Cameleongirl · 21/05/2022 19:09

She sounds a bit dotty, tbh, especially given her follow-up remark about having him young?!

ignore it, OP, and even feel sorry for her as she’s either not all there or has horrendous eyesight. Seriously. 💐

Irishgene · 21/05/2022 19:09

I once dropped my purse in town and when someone saw me looking for it told me it was behind the counter in the supermarket.

The lady in the shop refused to give it to me as I looked different to my driving licence photo! I had just had a baby (looked knackered) and had different coloured hair.

I was so embarrassed.

whatdodos · 21/05/2022 19:20

Bless you OP I'm sure you look fab and like you said her eye prescription needs changing 🥰 if it makes you feel better she probably went home feeling more mortified than you. I'm a HCP and once asked a patients relative if she enjoyed visiting her son turns out she was his wife 🙃 I could have died on the spot but she kaughed it off and said it happens alot as there's like a 20 year age gap between them!

KurriKawari · 21/05/2022 19:23

Well someone recently thought my 13 year old was my daughter!! People chat shit sometimes, best to move on.
