£10 for 6 supermarket eggs!

We're on holiday in Norfolk, and needed some eggs. Stopped at a Shell garage for petrol and asked DH to nip into the Little Waitrose attached for a box of 6. He came out looking shell-shocked, having just spent £10 on a box of crappy supermarket quality eggs! Not lovely local eggs which I might have understood, but 6 of those bog standard Happy Egg Co ones! The idiot didn't get a receipt or I'd be fuming on the Waitrose twitter feed.

He also spent £4 on 2 pints of waitrose semi skim milk.

Is this normal for a Little Waitrose? It wasn't a motorway services, just a local Shell garage. Or has the cost of living crisis hit Norfolk particularly hard????

That's shocking, but egg production in the UK is under extreme pressure at the moment and I think eggs are set to move from being a staple to a luxury for many people sadly.
I would have take them back. £10 for six eggs is just no!

Shoxfordian · 12/05/2022 15:01

That is eggspensive

Blahcat · 12/05/2022 15:01

Shell-shocked 😂 x2

daisychainsandrainbows · 12/05/2022 15:02

I can't say I've ever been in a little Waitrose shop but this is definitely not Normal for Norfolk.

Did DH not notice the price on the shelf? Or query it at the till? I can't fathom just accepting a £14 charge for 6 eggs and 2 pints of milk!

I hope your eggs are golden or at least the most delicious eggs you've ever eaten.

PinkyFlamingo · 12/05/2022 15:03

£10? What a yolk!

I live in Norfolk and the service stations don't charge that much (even the ones that are out to fleece the holiday makers) so I think he must have got it wrong - no way would it cost that much

Thelikelylass · 12/05/2022 15:05

Henny chance there's been an error?

GoodnightJude1 · 12/05/2022 15:06

I was at my mums in Norfolk last weekend and got 6 of the Clarence Court - Burford Brown eggs from a little Waitrose and they were about £3.50. Can’t imagine why they’d be anywhere near £10 🤔

Sockpile · 12/05/2022 15:06

Little Waitrose is usually more expensive but not 4 times the cost - £10 for 6 hens eggs seems unlikely even if they were the most expensive ones sold by Waitrose.

TanteRose · 12/05/2022 15:06

You need to scramble back there fast and get a refund Wink

BarbaraofSeville · 12/05/2022 15:07

It can't be normal surely. Your not seriously saying that a garage (and a chain at that, so not like it's some enterprising individual) charged those prices and your DH just paid it instead of putting them back? Is he Rishi Sunak, stupidly rich and also out of touch with what things should cost?

At an out of the way/dual carriageway type garage, I'd expect £1 or so for the milk and a maximum of £2 or so for the eggs. Maybe £4 in total, not £14.

Are you sure he didn't buy a load of other things that you haven't seen yet?

nearlyspringyay · 12/05/2022 15:08

Are they Burford Browns?!

That's a lot but I'm going to hazard a guess you are in Cornwall and they can charge what they like! People will pay because no other option...

BarbaraofSeville · 12/05/2022 15:10

Is there another Norfolk in Cornwall as well as the big one east of Cambridge?

If people pay those prices, not that I believe anyone is asking for them, more fool them.

surekaren · 12/05/2022 15:12

This is not the price of eggs and milk in Waitrose.

Waitrose person here.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/05/2022 15:13

I bet he's paid for someone's tenners worth of petrol as well as the eggs and milk. Was he not paying attention when they asked if he'd bought any fuel?

CapMarvel · 12/05/2022 15:18

Somethings gone wrong there, there is no way any shop charges £10 for 6 eggs.

Did husband not think to query it at the till?

catscatscatseverywhere · 12/05/2022 15:19

It's bit more expensive, but shouldn't be this much...

ProfessorInkling · 12/05/2022 15:21

We need that receipt.

x2boys · 12/05/2022 15:21

Little Waitrose or even Big Waitrose isn't "a thing " where I live ,but I would want golden eggs for that price!

savoycabbage · 12/05/2022 15:25

I can't believe this thread has been going for half an hour and nobody has gone to a Little Waitrose in Norfolk to check the prices of eggs.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/05/2022 15:26

Did a gold hen lay them?

SheilaWilde · 12/05/2022 15:29

That's an eggstavagant purchase!
Did he buy a bottle of wine too? Because then £14 would make sense.

otherusername · 12/05/2022 15:29

Did he check the price on the shelf or get an itemised receipt? Surely it's an error? Or your husband secretly bought something else and pretended the eggs and milk were really expensive?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/05/2022 15:29

Crap too far to drive from London and check! This can’t be real- someone’s fucked up at the till
