Royally pissed off. And shouldn't labelling be better regulated to ensure only products made with real milk and cream (aka dairy) are called 'ice cream'? Oat paste should be marketed as something else.

Being the '1st carbon negative ice cream company' will not make any difference if the product is no good or cannot be eaten due to allergens🙄

Who's advising these companies?

I loved their original chocolate ice cream, the new low cal vegan one is awful.
DS still likes their version of mini milks and fruit and veg rocket lollies

MangyInseam · 30/04/2022 23:39

Gluten free was the band wagon pre-covid, now it's veganism. I would say that is their thing.

Is it common for ice-cream to have gluten? It would certainly be annoying if you really needed that and now it was unavailable.

WhiteFire · 30/04/2022 23:42

YANBU. Unfortunately companies just follow the money and that is currently vegan/plant based and carbon neutral (can you even be negative, is that possible?) Gluten-free is so last year, which obviously is no help whatsoever if you genuinely can't eat gluten.

PickAChew · 30/04/2022 23:42

Well, if I liked ice cream I'd be fine with vegan as I'm lactose intolerant but how the hell does ice cream manage to NOT be gluten free?

Is it that sometimes it is "produced in the same factory as products containing gluten" which does rule it out for some.

Yes, and they are so ubiquitous! It was nice to be able to go into many cafes and know that there would be something I could safely eat. Sadly it's no longer the case

Yes, that's the problem. A lot of food that is naturally gluten free can be 'off-limits' if cross-contaminated

Are you annoyed that peanut butter is called butter not peanut paste?

Same1977 · 01/05/2022 01:23

99 percent of ice cream is still dairy ...is this going to be another vegan bashing thread?

OhLordyWhatNow · 01/05/2022 01:24

Coeliacs can react to the protein found in oats too as it similar to gluten, so a move to oat paste is not great.

And even for coeliacs who can tolerate oats, or for those of us who are allergic to gluten/wheat, unless oats are certified gluten free, we can't eat them safely.

truhamboys · 01/05/2022 01:31

Evidently they've decided that the vegan market, including those trying to reduce dairy consumption, and the lactose free / milk allergy customers, are collectively a bigger target market than the gluten intolerant and coeliacs.

They've switched one allergen for another; you're just narked because they added your allergen. No doubt if you had a milk allergy you'd be thrilled.

As for vegan ice cream being called ice cream - are you also annoyed at the lack of mince in mince pies, or the lack of butter in peanut butter? It's a clear name and everyone instantly has a decent idea of what they're getting, with the option to do a deep dive into the ingredients list if they wish.

WindyKnickers · 01/05/2022 01:38

I've never heard of Judes ice cream but the gradual removal of gluten free options in favour of trendier vegan options boils my piss in general. Luckily 99% of ice cream is GF so I wouldn't begrudge vegans having some options in this area too.

I've had more run-ins than I care to remember with vegans who believe their diet choice is superior and are dismissive of the need to remove other things from your diet for medical need.

LoveInSlowMotion · 01/05/2022 01:48

I’m still campaigning for toad in the hole to have real toads in. The guy from the Simpsons didn’t have much luck suing the makers of ‘The Neverending Story’. And don’t even get me started on ladyfingers and spotted dick. 🤬

You seem quite angry.

Nobody has said vegans can't have ice cream if that's what they want.

Though it is a problem for coeliacs if suitable product lines are disappearing as the GF prescription was deemed no longer needed as the variety of GF goods available in supermarkets/ stores had increased.

But it’s not gluten free, which as a coeliac is massively annoying. Losing foods for us is a total pain as well are so restricted anyway

OhLordyWhatNow · 01/05/2022 01:53

Oh and coeliacs disease is not an allergy.

hayleybau · 01/05/2022 02:01

No idea OP but I love love love their watermelon ice lollies. They're heavenly

OhRiRi · 01/05/2022 02:10

They've done a vegan range for a long time. They still do their normal range.

Fortbite · 01/05/2022 05:02

Vegan ice cream is clearly labelled and someone with allergies would check the ingredients so yabu in relation to the name. Yanbu that it's frustrating gluten free ranges are shrinking.

knitnerd90 · 01/05/2022 05:28

Well, the UK labelling regulations are already woolly on ice cream - see having to label things "dairy ice cream" because the cheap stuff has vegetable oil in it. In other countries (USA for example) that's not allowed. There, the vegan ice cream is labelled "Nondairy frozen dessert".

But meanwhile in the USA they can label things "oatmilk" and "almondmilk" but in the UK and EU the word "milk" is more strictly controlled. It's really all about the food labelling regulations.

Overthebow · 01/05/2022 06:21

Is it that the gf option wasn’t selling enough? Places won’t stock it if enough people aren’t buying it. Maybe the vegan option sells better.

slashlover · 01/05/2022 06:25

Have you actually contacted Jude's to complain? There's no mention of it in any of the comments of their most recent instagram or facebook posts. Apparently they introduced a vegan option in 2019.

Carpy88999 · 01/05/2022 06:36

I'm a vegan and don't feel the need to make a crying post every time a company changes a recipe and feels the need to add fucking milk powder for whatever reason.

Put your big girl pants on and find an alternative I'm sure it's not that difficult.
