To be annoyed that Jude's ice cream have gone mostly vegan and are no longer gluten free?

Royally pissed off. And shouldn't labelling be better regulated to ensure only products made with real milk and cream (aka dairy) are called 'ice cream'? Oat paste should be marketed as something else.

Being the '1st carbon negative ice cream company' will not make any difference if the product is no good or cannot be eaten due to allergens🙄

Who's advising these companies?

i don’t know where you’re looking but both Tesco and sainsburys here stock vegan and non vegan
I think it’s great they’ve gone carbon neutral actually

Florrey · 01/05/2022 06:43

Vegan = lifestyle choice.
Glutenfree = medically necessary for millions of people.

YANBU to be miffed they have stopped catering for a whole segment of the population. Truthfully though I think they’ve made their market smaller by removing dairy - vegans are only about 1% of the population and the rest of us don’t really eat that stuff because it’s not very nice.

Grapewrath · 01/05/2022 06:46

As for real milk and cream being used only for dairy I mean I’m not even sure why you think that should be a rule tbh

I'm a vegan and don't feel the need to make a crying post every time a company changes a recipe and feels the need to add fucking milk powder for whatever reason.

Put your big girl pants on and find an alternative I'm sure it's not that difficult.

My ‘big girl pants’ won’t overcome my inability to eat gluten though

And the Judes marketing machine has done a great job of ensuring that their branded freezers, and therefore only their products, are stocked in pretty much every cafe around me, and absolutely every cafe in our local parks

So my ‘big girl pants’ also won’t stop that my family can now probably not have the fairly usual treat of going to the park for a play and an ice cream

Not the end of the world but quite impactful for a lot of families, despite your sneery comment

99 percent of ice cream is still dairy ...is this going to be another vegan bashing thread?

That might be true, but Judes was the best and my preferred ice cream brand. No longer it seems. Thanks for the heads up op.

But being vegan is a lifestyle choice. Bring coeliac isn't Hmm

There's no way on earth every single local cafe to you is now only stocking the plant based judes.

Aye, but there are some people who can’t have milk due to allergies and therefore the vegan option is not a choice.
I have 2 kids who are epipen users who high life threatening allergies to milk so avoiding it is not a choice. Unfortunately, they also have life threatening allergy to wheat so I lent eat this ice cream before the change and still can’t eat it now.
it would be absolutely wonderful if they only had to avoid either dairy or wheat as avoiding both makes for a very boring diet if we try to eat out.

Ferngreen · 01/05/2022 06:54

Carbon neutral - must be using donkeys to turn the giant mixers. and horses and carts to deliver it round the country...... or bought up farmland to cover with sitka spruce.

Innocenta · 01/05/2022 06:55

WindyKnickers · 01/05/2022 01:38

I've never heard of Judes ice cream but the gradual removal of gluten free options in favour of trendier vegan options boils my piss in general. Luckily 99% of ice cream is GF so I wouldn't begrudge vegans having some options in this area too.

I've had more run-ins than I care to remember with vegans who believe their diet choice is superior and are dismissive of the need to remove other things from your diet for medical need.

@WindyKnickers Plenty of vegans also have allergies or other medical dietary needs. It's not either/or.

knittingaddict · 01/05/2022 06:56

So they still do their original non vegan ice cream?

Loads of non vegans happily eat vegan ice cream.

Also veganism is an ethical stance, not a 'lifestyle choice'. It's legally acknowledged as a coherent and meaningful ethical position.

StageRage · 01/05/2022 07:04

Is the dairy Judes not still gluten free?

I just looked it up and it says it is.

SunaksNutsack · 01/05/2022 07:09

I sometimes work in catering and it’s notable that many diners pre pandemic who would have chosen gluten free food have switched over to vegan. It was a trend that is now on the wane. For people like you who really need gluten free options, it’s a real shame.
They may yet become an officially GF brand as the certification may take time. If ice cream is all they make, I can’t see why they can’t. why not write to ask them and look for an alternative in the meantime. There are several indie ice cream shops near me that make GF ice cream.

DonnatellaLyman · 01/05/2022 07:20

To all the ‘vegan is a lifestyle choice’ posters, the increasing availability of vegan products is a lifesaver to milk and egg allergy sufferers, two of the most common allergens.

Also, Jude’s still do their non-vegan range. Just ask your local cafe to stock these too?

successstories · 01/05/2022 07:21

Aye, but there are some people who can’t have milk due to allergies and therefore the vegan option is not a choice

They used to have vegan options, but they have now made their (smaller) range of dairy products non gluten free, hence they have effectively shrunk their market.

I've checked their products physically and on their website and I can no longer see the labelling.

Very few flavours are non plant based now. The chocolate flavoured ice-cream is either plant-based or chocolate 'brownie'

So if they've had vegan options for over 2 1/2 years and they've only now made their dairy products non gluten free then why are you blaming the vegans?

successstories · 01/05/2022 07:32

There, the vegan ice cream is labelled "Nondairy frozen dessert".

But meanwhile in the USA they can label things "oatmilk" and "almondmilk" but in the UK and EU the word "milk" is more strictly controlled. It's really all about the food labelling regulations.

That's interesting

drpet49 · 01/05/2022 07:32

I won’t be buying their products anymore then. I don’t want vegan ice cream, tastes shit

Whatsinaname321 · 01/05/2022 07:33

So they do still have some of the original dairy based ice cream that is gluten free,
just a more limited range of flavours?

YABU, there are still options that you can safely eat.
try being allergic to gluten and dairy and not being able to eat any of them.

successstories · 01/05/2022 07:34

No, the original dairy based ice cream is no longer gluten free

OP posts:
Fortbite · 01/05/2022 07:37

Yes alternative milks here can't be called milk and have to be called almond drink or whatever. Sainsburys had plenty of judes dairy ice cream yesterday, if they have changed the ingredients years after bringing in the vegan range then I also fail to see how the vegan range is to blame. I've never seen any brand of dairy ice cream where it wasn't stated more than once that it was dairy free and what alt milk it contained on the front- if reading is the issue not sure how removing the words ice cream will help.
