To be annoyed that Jude's ice cream have gone mostly vegan and are no longer gluten free?

Royally pissed off. And shouldn't labelling be better regulated to ensure only products made with real milk and cream (aka dairy) are called 'ice cream'? Oat paste should be marketed as something else.

Being the '1st carbon negative ice cream company' will not make any difference if the product is no good or cannot be eaten due to allergens🙄

Who's advising these companies?

The company response to the climate emergency seems like a good thing. It would also be a good thing if they could remain gluten free. I’m not sure one necessarily follows/excludes the other.

They could do both but not whilst majority of ranges being dairy unless they can find cows that don't, burp, fart, eat and drink

SouthOfFrance · 01/05/2022 08:36

Aren't people forgetting it's not just gluten free diets that need to be catered for? Not all people who choose dairy free ice cream are vegan, many are dairy allergic & can't eat ice cream made with cows milk.

successstories · 01/05/2022 08:36

why are you blaming the vegans?

Nobody is blaming the vegans. It's the company that seems to have been co-opted by an ideology and lost the plot

OP posts:
successstories · 01/05/2022 08:40

Have you asked them?
Has Coeliac UK asked/been informed- or similar interested party?

They are not showing as suitable as per Coeliac UK. Contacting the company takes time TBH and most companies either don't bother responding or they simply confirm (unapologetically) that they have changed the ingredients, production processes, etc.

Losing the plot...finding a gap in the market to go in line with current demand.
Just chose out of so many other ice creams.

But why would the range they introduced a few years ago have that much impact on very recent changes?

NoSquirrels · 01/05/2022 08:41

If you read their statement they’ve working with their dairy farms on carbon reduction practices.

Because OP clearly couldn't find what she needed and found stuff (although probably there for a while ) stuff that annoyed her...all the plant paste stuff

Twitter is your friend. If it’s important- and I agree it is, as a Google search is throwing it up a gluten-free, then contact them.

They haven’t been ‘co-opted by an ideology’ though.

The climate emergency is real.

It’s very unfair that you have to lose out as a coeliac.

But it’s not a stupid decision on the part of the company.

successstories · 01/05/2022 08:46

The google search results are from 2014 🙄

I would be interested to see who is sitting on those focus groups and what 'research' is being shown to management TBH.

Maybe that was their best selling one and they decided to concentrate on that?
Possibly the market is saturated with dairy icecream brands for them to compete?

Loopytiles · 01/05/2022 08:51

Not unusual for a company not to publicise recipe changes that some current/prospective customers mightn’t like.

eg some people (eg me) won’t knowingly buy vegan iced products.

Raindancer411 · 01/05/2022 08:52

My son has a dairy allergy, so it has opened up a new avenue for him... with someone who cares for a child with an allergy, these things constantly change, and I expect him to not always be able to have what he currently has. It's part of the course sadly but I can understand the annoyance.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/05/2022 08:52

Carpy88999 · 01/05/2022 06:36

I'm a vegan and don't feel the need to make a crying post every time a company changes a recipe and feels the need to add fucking milk powder for whatever reason.

Put your big girl pants on and find an alternative I'm sure it's not that difficult.

That's because a. You can find an alternative easily and b. You're a vegan. It's a decision for you, not a medical necessity.

I'm Celiac and not able to have dairy here. No fuckers' catering for me - which is why I'm not vegan. Every bit of animal I eat is because I can't get gluten and oat free alternatives to it.

It's legally acknowledged as a coherent and meaningful ethical position

What does this mean? Legally?

A tribunal ruled that ethical veganism is a philosophical belief and a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.

So plant based eaters are following a lifestyle choice. But saying the same to ethical vegans who don't feel they have a choice to kill animals is like telling a Christian it is their choice to believe in their god. That might be your opinion but it's not really the done thing to express it.

I'm not understanding the logic here. You say it takes time, but so does posting a thread on Mumsnet about it and subsequently replying to people? Send an email/tweet and then get on with your day/week until they respond.

As it stands you're not going to be having the ice cream for now anyway, so what does it matter if you have to wait a bit for a response.

JS87 · 01/05/2022 09:03

I’ve never heard of Jude’s ice cream or seen it for sale. Is it only in the South of England?

successstories · 01/05/2022 09:06

I've seen it mostly in the South, yes

OP: it is quick and easy to contact the company via their website.

You could send them a message much more quickly than complaining on MN.

But by posting on MN you have at least attracted the attention of other coeliac ice cream fans, who could also contact Judes.

Contact Judes www.judes.com/contact

I find the half-arsed responses I usually get from companies quite annoying. At least I can find useful information and opinions on AIBU 😊

I wouldn't eat anything that is not labelled as gluten free or certified by Coeliac UK anyway, so there's limited value in 'checking' with the company in this instance

Yes, my point was that as the search results show it IS gluten-free then it’s misleading if they’re not updated if it is now not gluten-free. So it would be helpful if clarified.
