Royally pissed off. And shouldn't labelling be better regulated to ensure only products made with real milk and cream (aka dairy) are called 'ice cream'? Oat paste should be marketed as something else.

Being the '1st carbon negative ice cream company' will not make any difference if the product is no good or cannot be eaten due to allergens🙄

Who's advising these companies?

Already have done.

I have also been wearing mostly natural fibres where possible for decades so no polyester, acrylic, etc. creating micro plastics in my washing machine.

Wash clothing when required not after each wear.

And a whole host of other things. Quietly. Without feeling the need to preach about it.

I believe you get better results leading by example rather than shouting people down.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/05/2022 21:42

Thanks for the list of things to try swapping, I'm definitely interested in trying vegan toothpaste. At the moment there's literally only one toothpaste I can use, the cheapest Colgate one, as nearly every other one makes my mouth peel and gives me ulcers.

God, don't I sound delightful - dodgy stomach, spotty skin, peeling mouth, snuffly nose!

InkySquid · 02/05/2022 22:31

@Double3xposure - it must be really hard being coeliac as a youngster, so much socialising is around food and it can be totally excluding. I wasn't diagnosed until my twenties and even now sometimes want to stomp my feet about it.

There are genuinely some very cheap household products which are vegan. They're often not sold as This is Special For Vegans, but coincidentally vegan things!

Thank you, I'll take a look (and I genuinely mean that!). I already use quite a lot of Astonish products as it's a cheapish brand and I believe they are vegan.

I was just about to recommend Astonish. They're genuinely very good - special mention for the Mould and Mildew Blaster, but other products are great too.

I think Elbow Grease is vegan too (comes in a yellow spray bottle) and is excellent for anything involving fats and grease. It's normally £1/bottle

@HumourReplacementTherapy

It's Barley, Rye, Oats, and Wheat; not rice.

I agree, foods that naturally do not gluten do not need labelling. All coeliacs know a carrot does not contain gluten or avenin

However, free from and GF 'alternative' foods like bread and pasta do need Coeliac UK certification to guarantee suitability for coeliacs.

Doh! I have no idea why I typed rice 🤦🏻‍♀️
Which is fine to eat in most cases (unless in Turkey where they add orzo into it)

successstories · 03/05/2022 00:35

you've posted a few times and said food needs to be labelled as GF to be suitable for coeliacs. It doesn't

The Gluten Free labelling confirms that the manufactured product contains 20 parts per million (ppm) or less of gluten. So coeliacs know it's definitely safe to eat.

Some coeliacs may decide to go ahead and consume a product where gluten is not listed as an ingredient or where gluten is not mentioned in the 'may contain' section. But it's up to the individual to make this judgement and assess what level of risk they are prepared to take.

In the past, these ice creams were labelled as Gluten Free (if I recall correctly, most flavours). So now when you are at a café, grab a tub, notice that the Gluten Free label has been removed and see that the range seems now primarily oats/plant based, you wonder why. It's not possible to contact the company, investigate, etc etc there and then, so some would rather not take the risk, put it back and go without.

Labelling is a bit of a minefield for GF in the UK (and Europe) so it makes our life a lot easier when companies add the Gluten Free label (and many indeed do)
as it removes any uncertainty and speeds up the purchase decision

Thanks to everyone who have contributed helpful information to the thread and to the empathic vegans 🙂

To the more inflexible ones, I would advise you try and reign it in. If you continue to display such despotic behaviour at some point companies may think twice about seeking to associate themselves with you. And this is not a goady comment. Some of what you said on this thread was really scary (for instance that those who did not share your views did not deserve tolerance and respect), so I would just like to instigate some reflection on your part

Oh shut up. It is very scary and absolutely heartbreaking the torture that animals have to endure, never mind the fact that it is destroying the planet.

LoveInSlowMotion · 03/05/2022 02:54

Companies will go where the the money is and eventually where they are forced into going due to climate change. Plant based is the future whether you like it or not. People will choose survival over ice cream or cheese or even bacon!

You are not just arguing for more gluten free products, which I am all for, you are actively arguing for animal based products despite their production causing harm to billions of animals per year and destroying the planet. You will be met with opposing and passionate views when you are saying your access to animal products is more important than animals lives, humanity and the planets survival.

It is extremely difficult to be tolerant and have respect for someone that has shown themselves to be a selfish, pedantic, goady person, that lies, twists what people have said, tries to cause division, blames vegans and thinks that their want of ice cream is more important than the planet !

At times it’s been hard to even take you seriously, I mean, anyone that claims they were left ‘starving’ and having nutrients ‘withheld’ from them because they didn’t get ice cream....just embarrassing. And then you offer advice on how others should conduct themselves. 😅

Marvellousmadness · 03/05/2022 03:23

Yabu
I love gluten ;)

Innocenta · 03/05/2022 06:43

@successstories There is wheat flour in multiple dairy flavours of Jude's. Maybe you should reflect on why you jumped to blaming vegans instead of doing due diligence, which would have showed you that the oats in their plant based products are likely a total red herring...?

PoseyFlump · 03/05/2022 08:16

@PinkSparklyPussyCat I'm sorry to hear you've had your gallbladder removed. A close family member had hers out ten years ago and it's been hell for her. We've finally found the foods she can eat and the biggest change for her came when we discovered Viridian Digestive Aid (digestive enzymes) which she takes with every meal and helps her enormously.

Her main issues are high-fat foods, eggs, mushrooms, hard to digest meat and dairy. Her diet is what some call seagan, vegan with fish.

My DP had that mouth flake thing with toothpaste too. He now uses Arm and Hammer charcoal white (which is vegan friendly)

Good luck and enjoy that holiday! 😀

PoseyFlump · 03/05/2022 08:21

For anyone who is interested in swapping every day items, the Co-op own brand toiletries etc are vegan and reasonably priced. And I second Astonish too.

A google search for 'accidentally vegan' will also throw up lots of products that may not be labelled vegan but don't include ingredients that are such as bourbon biscuits etc.

OhLordyWhatNow · 03/05/2022 09:20

You don't need multiple cleaning products btw.

Soda crystals are great value for money, are vegan friendly, and can be used for most cleaning purposes, including in your laundry, and to unblock drains with a tbsp vinegar.

PoseyFlump · 03/05/2022 09:42

Yy @OhLordyWhatNow my DP is a fan of soda crystals.

By that logic, does peanut butter also offend you?

That being said as a gluten intolerant, it is excruciatingly annoying.
