That beauty ‘trends’ are trying to make us all look like sex dolls?

As the subject line says - beauty standards / trends are just so… Unprogressive? Is that a word?

Huge exaggerated eyes with flicked eye-liner, contoured to death cheeks and tiny noses and overdrawn lips that look ready for a porn-shoot BJ (or lip-filler if you can afford it). Almost all young women have long hair as well, no interesting hairstyles.

Obviously I’m generalising, but it’s just so fucking boring. The Kardashians have a lot to answer for.

Are they meant to look like sex dolls?! I honestly thought the trend was inspired by drag queens with the big lips, cheek fillers, fake tan, extensions (hair, nails & eyelashes) and the contouring. I must be getting old! 😂

bookbuddy · 25/04/2022 20:32

I thought the trend had been inspired by Ru Paul’s drag race I’m not being derogatory to drag queens, I really am amazed how easy they make it look. Way too much effort for me lol

No you didn't. It's just another way to be spiteful and derogatory to the women who look like this. Still, you weren't being derogatory to men (in drag) though. So that's OK.

I highlight and contour and apply blush (using both cream and powder), as well as full foundation, cream eyeshadow, thin liquid liner, brow pencil and mascara, but I don't look like a sex doll in the slightest haha. I look pretty natural. I think most women who do wear makeup are more like me than the Instagram influencers.... I mean, yes women do wear makeup like that for a night out (I don't, I just wear the same makeup but with more lipstick, and my only nights out are dates with DH) but that's not really representative of how women look generally.

bookbuddy · 25/04/2022 21:14

Being spiteful to women? Where did I say that I disliked the trend? Personally I don’t mind how any one looks, I judge people on personality. Like I did actually say I was surprised that the current trend was centred around sex dolls!

VladmirsPoutine · 25/04/2022 21:20

Every so often I ask myself why I'm not a feminist then I read a MN thread and remember exactly why.

example. Looks like me after I nicked my mum’s make up palette at age 8

A lot of the time, people just do looks for instagram on their makeup pages. A lot of people don't go out like that. Makeup can be like art.
You can do it anyway you wish to.
Posting someone's work and slating it is so mean!

What happened to just letting women do whatever they want and look how they want? Even if it is similar.

I vote yabu because all "beauty trends" ie make up is misogynist at its root in my view (I know many women don't agree with this).

Women are beautiful, as beautiful as men. We don't need to cover up our faces if men don't.

Actually, in nature, the male animal/bird is usually the more beautiful of the two sexes. He needs to be to attract the best female.

The female in fact is better off being plain because she is less likely to be seen by a predator. She is much more valuable than the male so mustn’t get eaten so nature doesn’t waste time making her beautiful

We have it the wrong way around in our world which must be a product of misogyny because it’s completely backwards.

If all women from tomorrow refused to do any of this extreme beauty shit, men would still love women just the same

sjxoxo · 25/04/2022 21:33

@PlasticineMeg I wouldn’t say that make up is on trend at all!!! The opposite. And it’s hideous… I’m seeing ‘natural’ everywhere except it’s natural made with make up! X

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 25/04/2022 21:42

Many of you clearly don’t spend much time with young adults. I’ve been teaching for twenty years and the girls wear less make-up now than at any point.

You need to remember that there is a whole new generation coming through who don’t want to emulate Kim Kardashian; she is old enough to be their mum!

What makes you think anyone posting negatively is particularly feminist?

Questiontellme · 24/04/2022 23:10

On one hand I hear you, but its only one 'style' if you want to call it that, I see other interesting styles and lots of short hair.

I would normally say a lot of it is filters and as long as its women amd not girls we should let people get on with it....however I had the most disturbing happening last week.......at busy crossroads waiting to turn right, car opp waiting to turn their right, I could see straight in and had to do a triple take as I honestly thought it was a see doll in the passenger seat, hands down moat grotesque thing I have ever seen IRL hugely inflated face, and lips with so much heavy sheeny make up on it looked plastic huge lashes and eyebrows, what must have been coloured contacts and long jet black extensions it was so extreme, I was thinking to myself for days why would anyone want to do that to themselves.

Why would you call a woman a 'grotesque thing'?

skybluee · 26/04/2022 00:40

All of this is just another way of criticising women. I don't know why people do it. Not very nice really.

And as for feminism... feminism is simply wanting men and women to have equal rights. I don't know why a MN thread would influence that.

Reallyreallyborednow · 26/04/2022 07:41

Every so often I ask myself why I'm not a feminist then I read a MN thread and remember exactly why

so because of threads you read on mumsnet you don’t believe in equality for women?

Um.. black people can naturally have blonde hair as well as red.

There's nothing natural about Beyonce's blondness. Um..some white people can also have naturally big lips. I'm not sure why this thread became politicised. As I said, some ppl thrive on division.

daisyjgrey · 26/04/2022 09:40

@Labscollie Still going I see. @whumpthereitis explained it quite well slightly further up. It's not a difficult concept, regardless of how much you want to kick against it.

Also, 'reverse racism' or 'double standards' as you've so eloquently called it, isn't a thing. The oppressors cannot be the oppressed.

Ah yes, Mumsnet server fail strikes again...

Found this photo in my FB feed, from a Polish skin care clinic. Apparently the result of injecting 1ml hyaluronic acid. If this isn’t grotesque I don’t know what is.
