That beauty ‘trends’ are trying to make us all look like sex dolls?

Montuaklighthouse · 24/04/2022 19:37

As the subject line says - beauty standards / trends are just so… Unprogressive? Is that a word?

Huge exaggerated eyes with flicked eye-liner, contoured to death cheeks and tiny noses and overdrawn lips that look ready for a porn-shoot BJ (or lip-filler if you can afford it). Almost all young women have long hair as well, no interesting hairstyles.

Obviously I’m generalising, but it’s just so fucking boring. The Kardashians have a lot to answer for.

I didn't say anything about men. You are projecting.

I didn't tell anybody what to wear. You are projecting.

Quiet frankly I don't give a shit what you do or don't wear, I don't fucking care. It makes not a dot of difference to me.

If it isn't jealousy what else would possess a group to shame other women and make fun of children, saying they look like porn stars, call out specific individuals on instagram.
I don't just mean jealous of the way they look either... Jealous they have confidence? Time to take care of themselves? Don't look like dogshit? Jealous they seem happy? Or perhaps it is the alternative which is much much worse. You just hate young women for existing.

"from a lifetime of being overlooked"

Overlooked by women then? That doesn't even make sense.

It's not just young women who go for this look and not all young women have this look so I don't know what this has to do with hating young women. I'm probably younger than you anyway.

This is clearly touched a nerve with you so work on your self esteem. If you like the way you looked you wouldn't be so triggered.

Women with surgery/fillers/heavy makeup are rarely confident so it would be odd to be jealous of their confidence. The ones I know with fillers are the most insecure people I've ever met.

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 25/04/2022 13:39

Not quite sure how you extrapolated these ideas from figtrees’ post which didn’t mention men and didn’t tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t wear. Could you explain?

And who told figtree what to wear? Noone. That's her projecting.

Fig says women are jealous of being overlooked. How can that not be interpreted as being about men?

Not a fan of the idea big lips are porn BJ ready...
I don't like altering ones face, but the connection between large lips and being a sex doll is pretty offensive.

I remember being teased a lot at secondary school about my big lips. A few people have asked if I have had fillers year back, but it's actually nothing compared to what they have now. It's the top lip duck thing I don't get. I must be reallllly old now.

doadeer · 25/04/2022 13:58

Agree the big lips = blow up doll or porn star is bullshit. Me and DH both have really big lips naturally... And I can assure you my 6ft 4 husband doesn't look like a blow up doll. It's a very white centric view.

I am constantly reading on here how women of a certain age/weight/aesthetic feel invisible. It is the entire narrative for the kind of hatred being spouted here.

If you don't believe me you haven't been paying attention.

"This is clearly touched a nerve with you so work on your self esteem. If you like the way you looked you wouldn't be so triggered." ...Are you so unimaginative that you just want to parrot back what I said to you? Really?

I'm not so damaged and self conscious that I have to make myself feel better by putting down other women's appearance.

If you disagree with me do much tell me what gives you the right to bully other women?
What gives you the right to shame women and even girls for what they choose to wear?

Flatbrokefornow · 25/04/2022 14:12

I wouldn’t choose it but it’s not my face.

It’s interesting, though, that current fashion does seem to be either a very made up, incredibly faux Disney style, and very pro anti-make up - almost not looking female, or in any way polished at all - not my personal I-couldn’t-be-arsed-style, but almost purposely anti-traditionally-female look. Like you have to be one or the other these days.

balancebeam · 25/04/2022 14:30

I've seen the glassy, natural make up. It looks amazing but difficult for your average person to pull off.

Someone mentioned social class with some of these make up trends and I think that's probably true and always has been.

I still see towering heels about in the city!

TheChocotastic · 25/04/2022 14:45

It doesn't effect you. Frankly you all sound jealous, perhaps sore from a lifetime of being overlooked because you're as dull as dishwater. Sad little life you must have to be that invested in what others look like.

Pot meets kettle I'm afraid @figtrees. Your comment wasn't addressed to me, but you're doing the same thing. Like pp said, not wearing makeup = being overlooked by men? Two sides of the same coin: you think you need makeup to attract men? (speak for yourself).

There have been some more critical comments on this thread, this is not how you handle it. You don't care about feminism yourself you're just upset some posters dislike your look.

TheChocotastic · 25/04/2022 14:47

I agree. Plenty born with large lips esp. from black backgrounds. Always some people who start showing themselves up when lips are mentioned.

DickVanDyke26 · 25/04/2022 14:55

Completely agree. It's vile. Not attractive.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/04/2022 14:58

The doll look is grim, but it’s only a section of the population. You are exaggerating to imply most people are running round looking like this.

If you bothered to read my comments after this you would see I clearly never mention men. In fact feeling invisible is something I read here often.

So, as to not allow you to guide the conversation away from the real issue. What makes you think you, or anybody else, has the right to tell women what to wear?
What gives you, or anybody else, the right to bully women and even children about how they choose to dress? Or shame them for the way they choose to look?
What makes you think that is okay to compare women (and even children mentioned in this thread.) to sexual objects?

Saying somebody looks like a blow up doll is objectification. In case I need to clarify that for you.

FYI I actually don't have filler, don't wear false lashes etc, not that it would matter at all if I did. You see, based on what you know of me, which is just some text, you have made an enormous leap and judgement. Yet again illustrating my entire point.

luxxlisbon · 25/04/2022 15:02

Most of the things in the OP aren’t even new. Makeup has been around forever in one form or another.
This post is just another way to rip women apart.
Who gives a fuck if another woman wants lip fillers or always wears fake lashes? It doesn’t make you better than them.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/04/2022 15:03

I find the idea that women only choose their aesthetic so that men will ride them, deeply misogynistic and reductionist.

Floofyfoofy · 25/04/2022 15:08

As a mother of young daughters I really hope that this trend for altering your face beyond recognition doesn’t last much longer. I teach in a university on a very female dominated course and everyone looks the same. Even those who don’t appear to have had fillers wear so much make up I wouldn’t recognise them without it.

I hear them moan about how long it takes to get ready and how much it costs to maintain.

I don’t get it, but I guess am old now so I won’t. I can’t help but feel sad that they feel the need to change their lovely faces to conform or feel confident or whatever it is for.

SoyaChai · 25/04/2022 15:11

Snapchat and Instagram filters have a lot to answer for. I've always hated how I looked but after using some of the filters that give you that contoured, smaller nose, bigger lips, smooth skin look... I hate "natural" photos of myself. Surgeons have had women go in with images of themselves behind a filter and told to make them look like that. We see so many influencers and other women using these filters on their profiles and we think they all naturally look like that.

Look at the most recent The Apprentice. Most of the women on there were dressed like cheap hookers

Pumped up lips, fake tan, hair extensions, fake eye lashes, 2' of makeup etc etc

Going to a business meeting dressed like good knows what, so trashy and embarrassing

Karren Brady has started to look like an older version of the apprentice clones.

@Josette77 isn't wrong though. You can be as Daily Mail comment section as you like about it, doesn't make it less true.

Why the need to insinuate white women are trying to emulate black women? I find that patronising. Daily Mail comment? Ah, that compartmentalising trick, that's normally found on MN. Unless you read the Guardian, you must take the Daily Mail.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/04/2022 15:53

My husband reckons they all look like drag queens or in pantomime.

Best tolock the thread now and end the debate Crikey’s husband has spoken.

I don't need to insinuate anything. I'm saying it, outright.

Features that are stereotypically POC and historically classed as undesirable are now being literally white washed and made acceptable in mainstream culture because they're being worn by white women.

You can be as eye-rolly as you like about racism being discussed in this context, but it doesn't make it not true.

This reminds me of the other day when I wanted to buy some mascara for daytime use, and I could only find one mascara that wasn't like 'SUPER FALSE EYELASH EFFECT MEGA GIANT THICK LASHES' in super blackest black. I just want something subtle to make my pale eyelashes visible when I'm wearing makeup for crying out loud!

Maybelline Great Lash. The one in the pink and green tube. It's the best for normal looking lashes that doesn't transfer onto your brow!

Beetlewings · 25/04/2022 16:44

It's just fashion. Wait for a bit and something else outrageous will come along. Plus ça change and all that
