That beauty ‘trends’ are trying to make us all look like sex dolls?

Montuaklighthouse · 24/04/2022 19:37

As the subject line says - beauty standards / trends are just so… Unprogressive? Is that a word?

Huge exaggerated eyes with flicked eye-liner, contoured to death cheeks and tiny noses and overdrawn lips that look ready for a porn-shoot BJ (or lip-filler if you can afford it). Almost all young women have long hair as well, no interesting hairstyles.

Obviously I’m generalising, but it’s just so fucking boring. The Kardashians have a lot to answer for.

Not a fan of the idea big lips are porn BJ ready...
I don't like altering ones face, but the connection between large lips and being a sex doll is pretty offensive.

Yes I agree. There's something rather disturbing about women using these misogynist terms about other women's appearance. Its fine not to like a look, but talking about young women in this way is very offensive. Especially when it's hidden behind a smokescreen of faux feminist outrage.

toomanytwinkies · 25/04/2022 16:57

Where is everyone seeing these women with huge fake lips and drag makeup? Apart from the odd one on TV or social media I don’t see any women who look like this in real life. Most women I see out and about (Bournemouth) just look normal.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/04/2022 15:53

My husband reckons they all look like drag queens or in pantomime.

Ahh so you're also married to a man who in his spare time to likes concern himself with what women are wearing and then thinks he has any say in it.

I'm quite sure none of the women in question give two fucks what your husband thinks.

Other than to be midly irritated at yet another man gawping at them in the street. Funny how all these men who hate how these young women look still can't stop themselves having a good old stare. (Only to tell their wives how awful the young women look though. Obviously.)

One day they will have grandkids and they will surely ask “what fucking planet were you on grandma?”

i saw my colleague today after a week off work. Jesus shes been at the fillers again. Her lips are HUGE. Ugly and huge.

sad thing is she has mental health issues and says she ain’t pretty etc. before this crap she was stunning, and this certainly ain’t helping as people are looking at her then she is paranoid that they are. Look in the mirror girl. That is why they are looking. I swear i do it my self when sitting at my desk and i ask myself what is going on in her head.

its getting worse. When will they realise how pathetic they look?

im all for enhancing what you have and leave it looking natural.

I don't need to insinuate anything. I'm saying it, outright.

Features that are stereotypically POC and historically classed as undesirable are now being literally white washed and made acceptable in mainstream culture because they're being worn by white women.

You can be as eye-rolly as you like about racism being discussed in this context, but it doesn't make it not true.

...you can be as bandwagon hopping all you like, it doesn't make your opinion right. There are some people who look for divisions - in everything.

My friend recently posted a picture of her 14 year old on SM, with the insane makeup and hair extensions, then filters over the photo. It was captioned with what a 'natural stunner' she was.

The photo wouldn't have looked out of place on a porn advertisement. I told my friend this by DM and at the time it didn't go down well, but we've talked since, and the picture has been replaced with a very natural one.

Sometimes I think it's much easier being the mum of boys!

I think its a bit weird your mind went straight to porn tbh

Well documented racism in an industry being classed as bandwagon hopping...sounds about white.

So where does Beyonce, with her blonde hair, fit into this? Nobody owns a culture. Your last sentence is derogatory, which knocks you off your pedestal.

You are really misinformed. If you listen to what POC are saying about this, you might learn something.

Or just carry on denying everything, it's clearly worked for you so far.

Um.. black people can naturally have blonde hair as well as red.

WhackingPhoenix · 25/04/2022 18:38

What a disgustingly misogynistic post. Look at the language you use to describe other women! And you think it’s makeup trends that are ‘unprogressive’?

I wonder why telling someone that their fourteen year old child looked like she was in a porn shoot ‘didn’t go down well’...🤔

What on earth made you think that was an appropriate comment to make?

valerianaofficiana · 25/04/2022 18:46

Why does one need to follow the' trends' that are clearly cheap and nasty?
Know what looks good on you, know what suits you in terms of colour, cut, shape and length, in clothes and hair and just keep it as the base with''trendy' accessories etc.
The blow-up doll looks that so many sad souls so proudly exhibit on SM are laughable.

This is such an awful thread.

Agreed, a load of women slagging off other women. Lovely
(Not all of course)

whumpthereitis · 25/04/2022 19:00

It’s not bandwagon hopping to recognise that stereotypically black features, long considered vulgar and disgusting when displayed naturally on black women, have become a beauty trend when artificially created on white women. It’s the entire schtick of the Kardashians: take the aesthetic of black women and profit off it.

I wonder how many of the women being criticised in this thread even give the posters gleefully ripping them apart a second thought.

Good to know that if you dress spouting this shit up as feminist you can indulge in a bitchy free for all against other women whilst pretending it’s for a noble cause.

I agree with you entirely. The thread is just an excuse for a certain type of woman to be spiteful about other (younger) women. Waxing lyrical about things they have no knowledge of, and haven't the wit to comprehend when it's pointed out to them.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/04/2022 19:36

Beauty standards are not immune from patriarchal diktat. Though having said that it's always a certain kind of woman who resents other women for this. Almost always the same kind of feminist too.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 25/04/2022 19:37

Some of the comments on this thread are awful. Saying other women/girls look like porn stars, judging them etc

It's not for me some of the styles talked about but so what if other people like it? We don't all like the same thing and judging others and calling them porn stars because they look different to you is awful.

valerianaofficiana · 25/04/2022 19:38

There are younger women and there are younger women; please don't stipulate that all of the above find sex doll look something to aspire to.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/04/2022 19:39

@whumpthereitis You should have seen the threads about Megan Thee Stallion. Not only was she corrupting the youth she was also glorifying porn. It was a lovely read. So glad these feminists are only trying to do the best for women!!!!!

So you have no answer as to the double standards. Right.

Montuaklighthouse · 25/04/2022 20:11

There are loads of interesting and challenging views being made - wasn't quite expecting the thread to go where it has, but equally I was probably being naive and (as I said) a miserable git.

I, personally object more to the overall 'beauty standards' women (and girls) are under pressure to conform to - which does seem to be mostly geared towards pleasing the 'male gaze' and it would be pretty disingenuous to say otherwise imho.

I definitely take on board the points made in regards to racism - it's disgustingly fucked up that features which were rejected (historically) on POC are now being appropriated for (white) beauty trends.

I do think there is also a pornification in the beauty / fashion trends, especially on Insta and other SM which has reel after reel after reel of females pouting their overdrawn or filled lips in overtly sexually suggestive ways which I personally find quite grim. Yes, you can say they can do whatever the fuck they want - I 100% agree - but the reality is that most of the time they aren't doing it from a place of agency and actual confidence. It is still up to them though and I don't think anyone should tell them to stop / do something else.

When I was a teenager / young adult, I most definitely followed trends to either fit in and in the vain hope to be found attractive to men. Not everyone is me obviously - but I doubt I was alone in thinking that way back then (or now for others).

No one is worth less because they follow trends (or don't) - but to think the style or look is shit and unprogressive and facepalm in my mind when I see another example of it.

Thanks to everyone who added their thoughts - even if we completely disagree; it's good to try and read and take it all on board.🙌

I think I may have seen that one, albeit a bit late. Was that the one where Madonna was hailed at the visionary, yet Megan was derided as talentless and vulgar? Despite the fact her writing and rapping ability far outstrips Madonna’s skills in writing and singing. Always seems to be the way though, sadly.

If this thread is anything to go by, and indeed any thread about body hair and grooming, it’s hardly a surprise that a lot of women, whilst wholeheartedly believing in equality, baulk at actually calling themselves feminists.

—————————
It’s entirely possible to critique prevailing beauty standards without attacking other women, calling them disgusting and pathetic, and diagnosing them with mental problems based not on actual medical investigation, but your own prejudices.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/04/2022 20:24
