Reading this was a shock, given recent events... www.rte.ie/news/primetime/2022/0310/1285699-russian-embassy-orwell-road-irish-government/

@Lurking9to5

It was one citizen, and he was arrested. What do they want? That he go to jail for 15 years?
Forced conscription into the Russian army maybe?

They want the damage paid for, which is fair enough, and for him to be "appropriately punished".

Hard labour, breaking rocks to dig out their basement?

It might have only been one citizen, but millions were probably with him in spirit.

eggandonion · 12/03/2022 16:43

Punishment could be appearing as a guest with Tommy Tiernan, tubridy or both. Damage must be covered by insurance.

TheOnlyMrsMac · 12/03/2022 16:44

The plan for next week is instead of just lighting up green for Paddys day, blue and yellow will also feature.

Any chance blue and yellow could be projected onto the Russian Embassy?

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 12/03/2022 16:45

I would bring my own tiny violin to play at the empty space where the gate used to be, but I live in the south of Ireland and it's a bit far.

Sweetmayday · 12/03/2022 17:52

Oh wow can't believe two topics on one thread still going strong.
This rte article explains about the embassy.

@QueenCatLady ha! It does a bit doesn't it? I've read the first one many a year ago. Paul Howard's social commentary is genius.
A Portuguese derail for a change. Maybe similar possible in Dublin?

twitter.com/rogermiles/status/1502241612101046275?s=21
This is genius... I googled it, and they have done the same (light up the Russian embassy in blue and yellow colours) in Georgia.

On a side note, my geography knowledge east of Vienna was never great... but I took out my atlas (actual paper book) to look at Kyiv, Crimea, Lviv etc.
Not quite ready for "Where in the World" yet but much better.

Chamomiltea · 13/03/2022 12:42

Wow didn’t realise I was starting such a contentious thread. To derail even further as I’m currently researching info around the Irish famine (the most famous one of many 😥) IRL, I found this an informative read (once I got past the horrific racism) to get a snapshot of pre-famine, 1835, British attitudes towards Ireland as a member of the Uk. I am posting here as it seems apt when so many do not seem to realise why Irish independence matters and when there is again a country in Europe invaded by it’s neighbour intent on imperialism.
If interested have a read of the chapters on Ireland play.google.com/store/books/details?id=x2UyAQAAIAAJ&rdid=book-x2UyAQAAIAAJ&rdot=1
Political Writings: England, Ireland and America, 1835. Russia, 1836. 1793 & 1853 Richard Cobden
I have also just come down with covid and feeling thoroughly crap so not posting much, though any suggestions of reading material welcome!

Kevin Wheelan was on with Tommy last night. You could try his books.

eggandonion · 13/03/2022 13:14

I liked the bit at the end where Kevin had given Tommy a spin home years ago, because everyone knows everyone!

LadyEloise1 · 13/03/2022 16:10

@Chamomiltea
Why was your thread derailed Hmm
Who was the first derailer ????
Hmmmm !!!

Did you know there was a famine in Ireland in 1924 on the west coast of Ireland.
It got little publicity as the new Irish government didn't want the bad publicity.
TheJournal.ie had an article on it a few years ago.
Worth a read.
My nana was born in 1924 on a small farm in a western county and she often spoke of the hungry 30's Sad

eggandonion · 13/03/2022 16:19

In fairness my parents were in Belfast in the 1930s and used exactly the same words. My mum went to primary school with kids with no shoes.
The war brought prosperity of a sort to so many families in Ireland, both parts of the island.
I can't recall who was on the radio last week discussing Russian families, so many millions of family members died in war and famine, it's difficult to imagine supporting unnecessary war.

SoItWas · 13/03/2022 16:56

"do you know that the "Irish Free State" was the name given to it post-partition in 1921"

Yup, I do.

"You actuallylikeit? Do you like the "Free State" because you think "ooh, free sounds nice, it's a positive thing isn't it"?"

I did say I liked "the ring of it", it's purely the positive connotations that appeal to me. Like America being "the land of the free-home of the brave". Carson didn't get what he wanted in the end, which was a United Ireland all under British rule. He didn't want partition either, and yes it did leave a sour taste, as did home rule. You're right though, it would have been bad name choice for Ireland, nice the name is in general.

Sorry if I've missed it, but has it been ascertained why the Russians wanted to expand underground, at the embassy?

SoItWas · 13/03/2022 16:57

*excuse typos, my keyboard's playing up

SoItWas · 13/03/2022 17:05

Reading wise, I recommend "The life of Lord Carson volume one- Edward Marjoribanks".

Afaik, there is no volume two, as the author commited suicide.

Let's hope they didn't leave a surprise in the water off the Donegal coast February, after agreeing not to carry it out off the coast of Cork.

I think we are past that particular derail.

Hummmmm..... is the trucks insurer on the hook for a non accidental act???

As the accident was technical on non-Irish non-UK / non-EU territories would they even have to cover the damages?

Wow, that is infuriating. Don't they have enough of their own coastline.
tintodeverano2 · 14/03/2022 08:40

Oh the irony of the name of the road it's located on...

OchonAgusOchonOh · 14/03/2022 09:18

Looks like the idea of changing the name of the street has been abandoned. Unsurprisingly, there was no support amongst the residents.

LadyEloise10 · 23/04/2022 18:17

Drove past the Russian embassy on Orwell Road recently and it was so gratifying to see so many neighbours had Ukranian flags flying on the gates and hedges of their upmarket homes.
