Reading this was a shock, given recent events... www.rte.ie/news/primetime/2022/0310/1285699-russian-embassy-orwell-road-irish-government/

Wow…

longwayoff · 10/03/2022 22:11

Interesting. All those mega basements permitted in Central London are planned to be useful in the future, no doubt. At least the Irish are awake to it.

Thewindwhispers · 10/03/2022 22:18

Hm. Russia want a huge underground bunker that has its own water supply, based in the EU country that has a policy of being neutral in any war.

Looks like war prep to me.

PinkPlantCase · 10/03/2022 22:18

What a find OP! That’s quite shocking. Their own water supply and a huge basement with masses of storage and 13 toilets.

Sounds like they know something we don’t.

OutlookStalking · 10/03/2022 22:19

Gosh...

Ocsetldil · 10/03/2022 22:22

A nuclear bunker.

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/03/2022 22:24

This expansion plan will go down like a cup of cold sick in Ireland.

Didn't know the embassy was on Orwell Road in Dublin though Grin

humphrg2 · 10/03/2022 22:25

They have a huge number of staff based in Ireland more than most other eu counties. But given most tech companies have their European quarters in Dublin its actually not that surprising

AfterSchoolWorry · 10/03/2022 22:25

Up to no good definitely.

Why they haven't been expelled is a mystery to me. Probably donating to political parties. 😒

Thighdentitycrisis · 10/03/2022 22:26

Like the photo of the one person protest (misses point)

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/03/2022 22:26

@Ocsetldil

A nuclear bunker.
Now, now.

Perhaps they're just deeply concerned about Sellafield across the sea.

Apparently Ireland is where they process all their information from spies in Europe
BornBlonde · 10/03/2022 22:29

Wow!

Salome61 · 10/03/2022 22:29

That's very interesting, it reminds me of the underground german hospital in Jersey. I'm glad permission was refused.

Lurking9to5 · 10/03/2022 22:29

Blimey, that does seem more expensive than necessary to build all of that underground on a 5.5 acre site. And its own ESB sub station?

Frazzled50yrold · 10/03/2022 22:31

Interesting that the malware attack which crippled Southern Ireland's health system was Russian in origin.

Chamomiltea · 10/03/2022 22:34

On a brighter note, it looks like the name of the road that the Russian embassy is on will be changing… www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/russian-embassys-street-in-dublin-may-be-renamed-independent-ukraine-road-1271636.html

When you put it like that.

How on earth could they think having their own water supply, their own electricity sub station in an underground bunker when there was 5.5 acres above ground wouldn't look suspicious?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 10/03/2022 22:35

The malware attack crippled all of Ireland's health system, not just that in the southern part of the country.

P.s. Southern Ireland is generally not considered an acceptable term to refer the the country of Ireland.

GreenTeaPingPong · 10/03/2022 22:36

I think it's less a nuclear bunker and more likely to be this:

Security sources were worried the subterranean area was ideal for storing computer servers potentially for use in data mining, troll farming and launching so-called "influence" operations.

Lurking9to5 · 10/03/2022 22:36

Oh I like that! Independent Ukraine Rd!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/03/2022 22:37

I see Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council have approved a motion to change the name of Orwell Road to Independent Ukraine Road. A nice address for the Russian Embassy.

Lurking9to5 · 10/03/2022 22:37

I suspect Ireland paid that ransom money :-(
