Reading this was a shock, given recent events... www.rte.ie/news/primetime/2022/0310/1285699-russian-embassy-orwell-road-irish-government/

Poor Northern Ireland - cursed to be blighted by bigotry for how many more generations.

RoastedFerret · 11/03/2022 19:05
@YerWanIsGettinNotions, no, Unionists generally have no problem acknowledging the existence of the Republic of Ireland.

What they don't like is the use of the term "Ireland" for it when it's the name of the entire island. It does suggest a single country.

Likewise, Sinn Féin does not like "Ireland" being used for the south either, funnily enough! To them, "Ireland" should only be used for a united Ireland as a single country. They call the Republic "South of Ireland", "Southern Ireland" and "26 Counties".

That, ironically enough, is one if the few things the two actually agree on.
I like to call Northern Ireland Western Scotland, the accent is pretty similar and really I just feel that being in the UK you have more in common with Scotland than you do Ireland. You both call soccer football too so it makes a lot of sense.

Just because I say it it doesn't make it the truth, just like you have spent all of your day posting about the 'South of Ireland' but that doesn't make it the truth either no matter what the eejits in Sinn Fein say.

JaneJeffer · 11/03/2022 19:12

They spent more time googling and copying and pasting @RoastedFerret Grin

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 11/03/2022 19:12

I've never heard Sinn Fein say 'Southern Ireland '. 'The South', 'The 26 Counties', The Republic', yes. I'll have to listen more closely to see if they say 'Ireland'.

The general population of the country say 'Ireland' and most people don't have a reunification agenda, as far as I know.

This thread is bonkers. I'm enjoying the funny bits though.

Figrollface · 11/03/2022 19:14

Downnative you're not from Ireland and really don't have any insight into anything about the people or place so please stop trying to force your bigotry as fact.
It's quiet ironic that on a thread like this you don't realise how similar your mindset is to Putin.
You are deluded and refuse to call another country by its actual name instead you use a term harking back to a time when the said country was ruled by an oppressive neighbour!

Dinoteeth · 11/03/2022 19:16

@eggandonion

Im off to find a Protestant traybake thread.
You might have better luck looking for Presbyterian Tray Bake - one of the loveliest and funniest threads I've read
MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 11/03/2022 19:18

The attached screenshot clearly tells us that its very common to call football "soccer" in the west and south-west of the island itself.

Not so common towards the eastern parts and Northern Ireland where its more common to call it....football. Even in the areas where Gaelic Football is played which is roughly almost half the bloody island.

I love that you keep proving my point that when Irish people refer to 'gaelic' that they're referring to gaelic football. I'll leave you to your mad soccer tangent.

DownNative · 11/03/2022 19:21

@lorking

The prejudice against the Irish that you see here on every thread is ridiculous.
What an absurd comment which certainly doesn't come close to meeting the test of prejudice! Hmm

Let's not devalue the term, eh?

Sinn Féin’s party chairman, Declan Kearney used "Southern Ireland" on the An Phoblacht website after their big election in the ROI.

Sinn Féin party activist Michael Doyle (election agent ofWaterfordTDDavid Cullinane) said, “we broke the bastards. We broke the Free State”.

In his book "Home: Why Public Housing is the Answer", Sinn Féin’s housing spokesman Eoin Ó Broin used "Southern Ireland".

Indeed, Leo Varadkhar said Sinn Féin were “burning a Tricolour before our eyes". A bit overdramatic, but there it is.

But it does NOT suggest prejudice by any means from anyone who uses it. It is simply a reality of partition.

You just proved your reading comprehension is POOR.

I've said all along I call the south the Republic of Ireland which perfectly acceptable. Or is it not?

Make your mind up.

Bigotry? Jesus wept.

JaneJeffer · 11/03/2022 19:25

What are your thoughts on the Russian Embassy in Ireland @DownNative?

DownNative · 11/03/2022 19:25

@OchonAgusOchonOh you say you haven't heard anyone from Sinn Féin use "Southern Ireland".

That's just you. Two have been named.

DownNative · 11/03/2022 19:26

@JaneJeffer

What are your thoughts on the Russian Embassy in Ireland *@DownNative*?
Posted about the Russian Embassy several pages back. It's a non-story which the ROI Government stopped anyway......Hmm
Figrollface · 11/03/2022 19:31

Downnative yes you're a bigot of the highest degree. You deny a country's right to use its constitutional name.
It may not suit your own agenda to use the term Ireland that's fine once you do use another recognised term but you insist on making false claims that the Republic of Ireland is also not known as Ireland. So another common trait you share is promoting fake news.

PerkingFaintly · 11/03/2022 19:32

Hmm right back atcha.

'Cos the Irish government stopped it (officially) but it's in no way a "non-story" that Russia wants to build a facility that size in strategically located Dublin or that Russia had 30 accredited diplomatic staff there compared to Ireland's 4 in Russia.

Inerve · 11/03/2022 19:32

Does anyone know if the Embassy owns the flat topped buildings on top left of the satellite view? The mission has a big plot alright - right in the middle of (admittedly) well heeled Dublin suburbia.

Not quite the cachet of Ailesbury Road though. Probably didn't want to be near the US and Chinese Embassies lol, oh and the Ukraine Embassy in the "real" Embassy belt around Elgin Road and the likes.

Hiding in plain view ah ha!

yodaforpresident · 11/03/2022 19:34

....and can you give us some insight on the 'Tayto Smashie' from a Down perspective @DownNative?

Inerve · 11/03/2022 19:35

DownNative is really Tatiana Yeltsin surely. But nah, working in a basement all day botting your way derailing threads in any way critical of Russia would be beneath the oligarchy.

Poor bot whoever they are anyway.

JaneJeffer · 11/03/2022 19:35

I wonder why @MNHQ allow people to name change and derail threads constantly? Weird

Inerve · 11/03/2022 19:38

@yodaforpresident

....and can you give us some insight on the 'Tayto Smashie' from a Down perspective *@DownNative*?
Many posters name change, but MN (I think) will only react if a post or poster is reported.

I'm not bothered at looking back at anyone's posting history THAT is weird. But it is very easy to spot the disrupters just the same, it is an industry.

Inerve · 11/03/2022 19:39

Sorry Yoda, I meant to quote Jane Jeffer. Mea culpa.

JaneJeffer · 11/03/2022 19:40

Or they won't do anything @Inerve. Some posters are immune to deleting and banning.

Once again, you're demonstrating your poor reading comprehension skills.

At no point have I denied "a country's right to use its constitutional name". Such an assertion is completely bizarre and bears no resemblance to what has actually been said by me. Hmm

Also, I've not once said that the Republic of Ireland isn't also known as "Ireland".

What I have said is that I don't use the term "Ireland" for the southern State and explained why.

But I do use "Republic of Ireland" and always have done my entire life.

So....are you now attempting to say that "Republic of Ireland" is wrong to use? Hmm

If not.....please read and comprehend posts carefully.

yodaforpresident · 11/03/2022 19:42

That's okay @Inerve

Sadly, as a former Armagh native I can confirm that there are plenty of people still like this is NI without having to blame it on Russia. Very much part of the reason I left and would never live in the place again.

PerkingFaintly · 11/03/2022 19:42

Still, it's keeping the thread bumped. I'd had no idea about the attempt to build this large Russian facility in Dublin.

JaneJeffer · 11/03/2022 19:43

it is an industry I think it's another word beginning with in
