@Lurking9to5

I suspect Ireland paid that ransom money :-(
Course they did.

@TheYearOfSmallThings

I see Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council have approved a motion to change the name of Orwell Road to Independent Ukraine Road. A nice address for the Russian Embassy.
Excellent

Should be called George Orwell 1984 Road. Although I reckon there needs to be a plebiscite of residents for a name change to pass. I think!
Frazzled50yrold · 10/03/2022 22:48

'P.s. Southern Ireland is generally not considered an acceptable term to refer the the country of Ireland'
Considering I live in Northern Ireland I consider Southern Ireland to be a perfectly acceptable term.

SunscreenCentral · 10/03/2022 22:48

Where is this Southern Ireland??

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/03/2022 22:51

A guy who lives across the road from the embassy was already in the Irish Times describing the decision to change the name as "Orwellian". The council voted to approve the change but made it a condition that residents should be consulted - he feels they are being pressured to vote for the change.

Inerve · 10/03/2022 22:51

Back to the Russian Embassy on leafy Orwell Road. Well Orwell Road for now anyway.

Maybe in your own head, it is. Which doesn't change the fact that it is not. There's Northern Ireland (that's the bit you say you live in Hmm) and then there's Ireland aka the Republic of Ireland. Hth Smile

Thanks. I was thinking that residents would need to be consulted. It will not be accepted, or at least I very much doubt it. Far too political for that neck of the woods, and it would affect house values you see......

Apols for the derail all, but these things matter.

MysweetAudrina · 10/03/2022 22:55

My dh was in there recently and he said it was an underground car park. They showed him around. He was there for work.

I live in Ireland and I don’t consider Southern Ireland an acceptable name for my country. I would correct someone if they used in conversation.

I'm fairly confident about where I live thank you and I also agree that these clarifications are important.End of derailing the thread now, for me at least.

No, it's not. I live in the south of Ireland however, in Co. Cork.

That's interesting about the proposed Russian extension. The first I heard of it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/03/2022 23:02

Actually I see Latvia has already changed the street their Russian embassy is on to Independent Ukraine Street, and Lithuania are changing theirs to Ukrainian Heroes Street.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 10/03/2022 23:04

I doubt they had a nuclear bunker in mind, the Russians are a) paranoid hysterics without a grounding in reality, b) expansionist and c) wanting somewhere from which to continue fomenting unrest via their bot/troll farms.

Orwell Road

What a beautifully ironic name.

lorking · 10/03/2022 23:05

How the heck that ever got through first time around!!

money I guess

I like their style!

Glasgow did similar many years ago to the South African Embassy, its Street was renamed Nelson Mandela PlaceSmile

Oh dear.

You are also geographically challenged in that case seeing as Malin Head in 'Southern Ireland' lies north of Northern Ireland.

GreyTS · 10/03/2022 23:17

And in Iran the British embassy is to be found on Bobby Sands Rd

Inerve · 10/03/2022 23:17

Oh give the North/South stuff a rest. We have enough trouble in the world.

Inerve · 10/03/2022 23:19

@GreyTS

But I think they moved the entrance to a road around the corner with a different address.
