Reading this was a shock, given recent events... www.rte.ie/news/primetime/2022/0310/1285699-russian-embassy-orwell-road-irish-government/

Or they won't do anything *@Inerve*. Some posters are immune to deleting and banning.
We just have to keep on the Russia theme so!

The recent incidents off the SW coast at sea made me very nervous. Cables and such like all around there. I wonder.... that was shortly before the invasion of Ukraine.

We are all being watched anyway, feck GDPR it's all nonsense to the big boys and girls in their bunkers/basements. Grey of face and repetitive of content.

CyranoCyrano · 11/03/2022 19:45

@DownNative THERE IS NO SUCH PLACE AS THE SOUTHERN STATE you are so ignorant. Posters just ignore her now. Bigots shouldn’t be given attention.

That's okay *@Inerve*

Sadly, as a former Armagh native I can confirm that there are plenty of people still like this is NI without having to blame it on Russia. Very much part of the reason I left and would never live in the place again.

Sorry to hear that, but I am not surprised. It is so polarised.

I don't think they are one of your countrymen.
DownNative · 11/03/2022 19:46

@PerkingFaintly

Hmm right back atcha.

'Cos the Irish government stopped it (officially) but it's in no way a "non-story" that Russia wants to build a facility that size in strategically located Dublin or that Russia had 30 accredited diplomatic staff there compared to Ireland's 4 in Russia.

What is the actual security issue in the ROI with the Dublin Embassy?

The plans for a subterranean car park and various other things has been dealt with by the government.

And they're currently in the process of cutting the number of Russian staff there which they should have done years ago anyway.

But there's no security threat as a result of action taken. The Republic of Ireland is not under threat from Russia and its skies is protected by the Royal Airforce.

Yes, the Russian plan was bonkers, but it never occurred.
@OchonAgusOchonOh you say you haven't heard anyone from Sinn Féin use "Southern Ireland".

That's just you. Two have been named.
Declan Kearney referred to the southern state in his blog on an phoblacht.

Ó Bróin uses the term South of Ireland, unless he's lying in this quote: Ó Broin explains: “Throughout the book the term South of Ireland refers to the entity officially known as the Republic of Ireland. Given that I am a Sinn Féin TD and committed Irish republican, I doubt you need me to explain the rationale for this.”

Downnative I won't be engaging with you further as all you can comprehend is the bigotry you were reared on.
Imagine thinking it's ok to dictate to another country which you're not part of what it's real names are.
Your sectarian opinions are not welcome in any part of the island of Ireland.

@Thewindwhispers

Hm. Russia want a huge underground bunker that has its own water supply, based in the EU country that has a policy of being neutral in any war.

Looks like war prep to me.

and a country that has a common travel area, ie unrestricted travel, with uk. so going from ireland to england is like going from scotland to england. there are deep historic reasons for this, and mostly has suited both ireland and uk. but everything seems to be a concern now. we all thought after the soviet union dissolved, that that was the end of the cold war worries. seems that putin wants to re-establish it, with all the privations that means for his own citizens, eg less consumer choice, shortages, queuing etc.

By your continued silence, I must take it that you are saying that its wrong to call the south "Republic of Ireland".

Funny, as several have said it's fine.

Your latest Ad Hominem is "sectarian". Nothing I have said can be construed as sectarian in the actual meaning of the word.

By your own flawed logic, you're saying Sinn Féin is sectarian for doing their best not to call the Republic...."Ireland". That's some mental gymnastics!

Once you start throwing around Ad Hominem attacks, you've lost the argument completely. As you can see, I personally don't go for that.

Its a shame that several people allow their emotions to get the better of them.....

Thanks, it came about from having ne double chin too many. Anyway now that we're in agreement about ignoring the sectarian bigot can we get back on track and discuss the reasons why we think the Russians planned such an elaborate embassy in Ireland?
yodaforpresident · 11/03/2022 20:22

I had the experience of a school trip to the USSR, as it still was, in 1990. I can confirm that they did indeed have attendants handing out toilet paper and it was the most depressing place that I have ever been - everything was grey and drab and grim. I can’t believe anyone in their right mind would want to return to that.

@OchonAgusOchonOh

Unfortunately, the Irish Times didn't quote the full part. Here's the full paragraph straight from Ó Broin's pen:

"Unfortunately, due to limitations in my own knowledge, time and space I have had to reduce the focus to just the housing system in Southern Ireland. Throughout the book the term South of Ireland refers to the entity officially known as the Republic of Ireland. Given that I am a Sinn Féin TD and committed Irish republican, I doubt you need me to explain the rationale for this.”

As you can see, he did use "Southern Ireland".

Take care.

Figrollface · 11/03/2022 20:30

Has anyone here been to Russia in recent years, it would be interesting to hear how it's changed since the collapse of the U.S.S.R.
I've had hopes of a short trip to St. Petersburg in the near future but I'm not sure that'll ever be a possibility in my lifetime. I've began to wonder will some eastern European countries become almost out of bounds in time to come.

JaneJeffer · 11/03/2022 20:30

Basements give me the creeps at the best of times.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 11/03/2022 20:35

OMG please, take the derail elsewhere. I've seen this exact same thread trotted out multiple times on MN.

Regarding the embassy: It's very worrying that their embassy is so large, I would like to know the size of other European embassies but can't seem to find any info.

Someone I was acquainted with got quite drunk at an event I was at and spent the end of the night cursing the Russian embassy, this person lived very close and absolutely hated them. Not sure if this person lives on Orwell road or backs on to them. In any case, I was a bit taken aback by the outburst at the time but I'm dying to know more about it all now.

Were they doing unauthorised building? What were the comings and goings of the place??

OchonAgusOchonOh · 11/03/2022 20:36

@ Figrollface - I think you're right. Best to ignore bigotry.

I haven't been to Russia recently but did spend a couple of days in Moscow in the 80's. The potholes on the runway was my first impression. You felt like you could be mugged in the airport as it was so dimly lit and pretty deserted. The only bright spot (literally) in the airport was the Aer Rianta bar.

JaneJeffer · 11/03/2022 20:37

Were they doing unauthorised building?
Not in Ireland they weren't! You try building something without planning permission and see how far you get Grin
