To be surprised at the number of grown men into lego

A couple of years ago I was moaning that I had no idea what to buy DH (40) for Christmas. Three men who sit near me immediately suggested a Lego millennium Falcon. I asked DH if he would like this (it’s expensive!) and his eyes lit up. Since then for most birthdays and Christmas I have bought more Lego kits for him (including a home alone one this year!)

Since WFH due to COVID I see into everyone’s home study in zoom calls; and loads of the men in their 30s and 40s have loads of Lego on display; particularly of the Star Wars variety!

Aibi to be so surprised at the number of men Who are so into Lego?

Lego is a wonderful toy for all ages!

Tillymintpolo · 18/02/2022 20:29

We have a Star Wars Lego collection

BrutusMcDogface · 18/02/2022 20:29

Yabu because Lego is fab, and why shouldn’t people play with it just because they’re grown up?! Being an adult can be bloody boring! 😊👍

OneTiredMam · 18/02/2022 20:29

YABU. Lego is fantastic for all genders and ages. It says up to 99 on the box for a reason. Wink

Maladicta · 18/02/2022 20:29

Just as well you can’t see my shelves then. Not just men.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 18/02/2022 20:30

I think you'll find it's not just men. I'm 41 and have a few sets.

Photolass · 18/02/2022 20:30

There are some wonderful Lego kits available. My son & his dad put together a model of one of the Apollo rockets. It took them over a month.

BrutusMcDogface · 18/02/2022 20:30

When my kids are too old to break it, I would love my own collection! The Disney castle would be first 😁

Pyri · 18/02/2022 20:30

I think it’s great. So nice to be creative and problem solving etc etc without everyone being glued to their phones constantly

Although the purist in me prefers the basic Lego sets that you could put some thought in to creating something yourself rather than having these kits

Aweefatcat · 18/02/2022 20:31

I see so far I’m being very unreasonable. In fairness it’s a healthy wholesome hobby! But my goodness, it’s a bit expensive. Only thing is, the resale value is good

I’m a grown woman and I’m quite into Lego, cia the kids

OddBoots · 18/02/2022 20:32

The adults I know who love Lego are women but I guess men could do it too. Wink

I have been a little bit tempted myself when work calms down a bit and I have more time.

littlebilliie · 18/02/2022 20:32

It's really a 3d jigsaw

WTF475878237NC · 18/02/2022 20:32

I am a woman and of a certain age and love Lego too.

Aweefatcat · 18/02/2022 20:33

@Pyri at “family game” time (15 minutes every evening DH, DS and I do some sort of board game or something) DS sometimes brings his Lego box in, and we have a challenge to make something random from the box (ie a house, or car, or peiple)

Yes, I can’t argue that it’s very 💰
Maybe that’s another reason I’m waiting till my kids are older; so I can justify the cost! 🙄

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 18/02/2022 20:33

IMO it's not any different than doing crafts or an art related hobby.

ohMaggieMaggieMae · 18/02/2022 20:33

Lego is great for all ages. Have you been on Bricklink? It is like ebay but all things lego.

Imdonna · 18/02/2022 20:34

Confused why you would be surprised?

What it's it about kego that makes you think adults wouldn't be?

BarbaraofSeville · 18/02/2022 20:34

They're known as 'adult fans of Lego'. It probably comes under the 'mindfulness' activities like adult colouring books and crafting.

One of the doctors (a 30 something man) who used to do the covid sections on BBC Breakfast had a Lego Taj Mahal in the background.

My dp loves lego, we have an insane amount of it in the garage. Our kids aren't quite big enough for it yet but he has been known to sneak downstairs and build stuff with their Duplo instead!

Eunicehasblownover · 18/02/2022 20:37

My Christmas present to myself was a huge limited edition lego set. It’s not just for men.

Aweefatcat · 18/02/2022 20:37

@Imdonna I’m thinking it’s just the sheer number of men that have Lego on display that’s a surprise! When people come over with their kids DH is always taking them a tour of the Lego

One of the few bits of lockdown DH and I really enjoyed was making scenes from Roald Dahl books out of Lego (DD's year were doing Dahl). He was particularly proud of his Esio Trot (we had a Lego Friends tortoise).

WTF475878237NC · 18/02/2022 20:48

I cannot believe I had never heard of Bricklink!
