To be surprised at the number of grown men into lego

A couple of years ago I was moaning that I had no idea what to buy DH (40) for Christmas. Three men who sit near me immediately suggested a Lego millennium Falcon. I asked DH if he would like this (it’s expensive!) and his eyes lit up. Since then for most birthdays and Christmas I have bought more Lego kits for him (including a home alone one this year!)

Since WFH due to COVID I see into everyone’s home study in zoom calls; and loads of the men in their 30s and 40s have loads of Lego on display; particularly of the Star Wars variety!

Aibi to be so surprised at the number of men Who are so into Lego?

AFOL and proud of it. But it is expensive. There are kits costing hundreds of pounds. They are things of beauty... such as the Titanic.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 18/02/2022 20:51

Didn't lego used to have something like "Ages 8-98" on their packaging?

Fizbosshoes · 18/02/2022 20:52

I took my DS to see the lego batman movie and nearly lost the will to live and I was amazed at the number of people in the cinema without kids!

Helping him do actual lego is far more enjoyable but thankfully he hasn't got into the really expensive sets. (Yet) DH would probably look at me as if I was demented if I bought him lego!

SpaceyCake · 18/02/2022 20:54

We're a Lego family. Grin We all get Lego for Christmas and birthdays and it's brilliant. We sometimes buy the non-branded bricks because otherwise we would be bankrupt! I think it's a great hobby and I know plenty of adults who are into it.

oncemoreunto · 18/02/2022 20:54

DH and I got into Lego with the dc, they have outgrown it and we still buy it!

AffIt · 18/02/2022 20:55

Lego is brilliant.

I'm a 42-year-old woman. I got the Ghostbusters ECTO-1 set for Christmas and I spent a highly enjoyable week putting it together.

It has pride of place on the shelf behind me and is unashamedly on display during video calls.

@WTF475878237NC

I cannot believe I had never heard of Bricklink!
This is a fairly new discovery to us as well. DH has been on it and our postie must be wondering why we're suddenly getting a steady stream of tiny parcels.

Another AFOL here - I took it up at the beginning of lockdown and haven’t stopped! There are lots of kits branded for over 18s because of the complexity of the builds. I’ve spent far too much money and I don’t plan to give it up.

I am 50 years old and have no kids so I don’t have to share 😁

violetbunny · 18/02/2022 20:58

Oh god. We have a "Lego room" in our house for DP's Lego. The Lego has its own special light up glass display case and everything.

Luckily it's in the box room so I just shut the door and pretend it doesn't exist Grin

MillyMollyMandyMaybe · 18/02/2022 20:59

And I have a London skyline Architecture set on my shelf behind me on video calls!

londonrach · 18/02/2022 21:00

And the number of woman...why should men get all thee fun, stop being sexist awweefatcat my dsis loves her lego as much as my dbil. In fact with their children they have lego weekends. You seen the friends lego op. Yabuuuuv.

Love the stuff!

Grendalsmum · 18/02/2022 21:11

DP has tons of it - he loves all the Star Wars stuff. He gets job lots from carboot sales and makes up the missing bits from Bricklink - he reckons its very mindful, with all the sorting and rummaging ... Some of the rare kits are insanely collectible!

Itsalmostanaccessory · 18/02/2022 21:13

I'm a woman in my 30s. I have 4 bookcases of lego on display.

Loopytiles · 18/02/2022 21:13

Love Lego, but the company employs few women in good roles and it shows in the sexist products aimed at girls.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/02/2022 21:14

That’s quite nice really.
There are so many more unpalatable things that grown men could be in to.

Blossom64265 · 18/02/2022 21:16

I’m a grown woman who is into lego. When the catalog arrives, DH just asks how are they taking our money this year? My sister is a huge fan as well.

My main constraint is space. I’ve got hogwarts on display on my reception room. I had to buy a new sideboard just for that.

Legoisthebest · 18/02/2022 21:19

I am an AFOL (see my user name Grin). Joining a lug (Lego User Group) a few years ago has been the best thing to happen to me for years. I've made friends, gained confidence and have so much fun.
I can't afford the really big sets (going above £50 is very very rare for me) but I can be very creative with a £9.99 set as much as a giant one !!

LubaLuca · 18/02/2022 21:21

I treated myself to the huge Lego Home Alone house for Christmas. I'm not a man, but I did show it on a work Zoom call Blush

Floralnomad · 18/02/2022 21:22

Myself and adult son are both Lego fans , we’ve got loads of sets . I prefer smaller sets now as they are easier to display although we have a lot of large sets ( Eiffel Tower / Disney castle / Houses of Parliament etc) . I got the Winnie and friends tree house for Christmas which is lovely .

MaryShelley1818 · 18/02/2022 21:25

We're definitely a Lego family! I have nearly all the Harry Potter sets, Friends, Disney, Jurassic World and Stranger Things.

DH has tons of Star Wars and Technic, and cars.

DS (4) has Mickey Mouse sets, Harry Potter, Avengers and Toy Story.

DD (12mths) got a Unicorn Duplo for her first Birthday a couple of weeks ago.

TinaYouFatLard · 18/02/2022 21:26

I’m a 43 year old woman AFL! I’ve done Hogwarts, Death Star, Disney Castle and loads more. I really like to have something kind of crafty to do but I’m really uncreative - can’t draw, paint, knit etc. Lego let’s me create something amazing by following very specific instructions!

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 18/02/2022 21:28

My Christmas was ruined this year because I didn’t get a Lego set. RUINED I tell you!

cestmoi123 · 18/02/2022 21:28

Christmas present...
