To be surprised at the number of grown men into lego

A couple of years ago I was moaning that I had no idea what to buy DH (40) for Christmas. Three men who sit near me immediately suggested a Lego millennium Falcon. I asked DH if he would like this (it’s expensive!) and his eyes lit up. Since then for most birthdays and Christmas I have bought more Lego kits for him (including a home alone one this year!)

Since WFH due to COVID I see into everyone’s home study in zoom calls; and loads of the men in their 30s and 40s have loads of Lego on display; particularly of the Star Wars variety!

Aibi to be so surprised at the number of men Who are so into Lego?

It's how I met my DH, good to have a shared hobby.

When my DD worked in the Legoland shop, she was surprised at the amount of men / dads spending 000s on Lego and more excited about it than their children!

Sosigsandwich · 18/02/2022 22:17

We love Lego! We have 6 of the modular buildings plus lots of the 'ideas'. Lovely like project to do together ☺️

RowanAlong · 18/02/2022 22:21

Lego is fabulous! Miss the days when my son would let me help - now I’m just brick finder...

Mulhollandmagoo · 18/02/2022 22:24

Not just men, I really enjoy Lego! I find it really relaxing. You are correct though, the stuff is bloody pricey

DillonPanthersTexas · 18/02/2022 22:26

Can't see the issue, if it's some therapeutic past time that does not impact on family time then what is the issue. There seems to be quite a few folk here who like adult colouring books.

hellithurt · 18/02/2022 22:31

I've never thought of it before and DH would hate it! But I'd love it..... starts writing Christmas list...

Blurp · 18/02/2022 22:31

Fb marketplace is great for cheap Lego - DD asked for a set that's about £120 new, which was way over budget, but I bought it from Marketplace for £30. The box was a bit bashed, but all the pieces and instructions were there.

Bricklink is great for buying missing pieces. Another good site is Rebrickable, which has loads of MOCs (My Own Creations - basically things other people have designed). It's handy for times when DS says "build me a hovercraft, mummy" - someone on there will have instructions for one! You can also keep a list of all the Lego sets you own, and it'll tell you how many of the hovercraft (or whatever) pieces you already have.

SoMuchToBits · 18/02/2022 22:38

Bricklink and rebrickable sound like fab resources for Lego owners. A bit like PlaymoDB for Playmobil fans. It's a brilliant resource.

scrivette · 18/02/2022 22:42

We are Lego fans in this house and have loads on display as well as loads of bricks to build with.

I currently love the flowers and am excited for 1st March as they are releasing loads of new sets that look amazing.

Those of you who are after the Disney Castle will have to be quick as it's due to be discontinued.

nanbread · 18/02/2022 22:42

About 20 years ago, Lego were at risk of going bankrupt until they changed tack and started actively targeting adults instead of just children.

Now they're the No1 toy brand.

So jealous, love those modular buildings but £££ (and we also have run out of room for even more Lego)
AllOfUsAreDead · 18/02/2022 22:46

I'm not into lego but I wouldn't say no to the hogwarts one. It would drive me insane trying to do it of course and probably never be completed, but I'd still like to try.

MaitlandGirl · 18/02/2022 22:48

We’ve got the Titanic model on the go at the moment - it’s fantastic :)

Jealous doesn't cover it. I had a good oogle at it in the Lego shop this week, thats the closest ill get.

Yabu, I'm a woman who has many Lego sets to build, need to sort out some more display space first.

justasking111 · 18/02/2022 23:03

I buy it second hand for DS architecture models he's doing this course at university. I have a large collection of loose Lego, bricks, bases, windows, doors, roof tiles, wheels and miscellaneous. Set it up on dining room table in bowls grandchildren love it as do I.

I find it soothing to sort and store away again. Weird or what 😂😂

FantasticFebruary · 18/02/2022 23:05

I love building it, but don't really want it on display after. I think I really need to be a sample builder!!

knittingaddict · 18/02/2022 23:07

I'm a grown woman and into Lego. I'm not the only one. It's fun and therapeutic. Expensive though, so it's an annual indulgence (Christmas present).

My adult daughter has Diagon Alley and apparently it's worth every penny.
Giggorata · 18/02/2022 23:18

Another lover of Lego, even though I don't do it now (had to choose between that or miniatures, due to available hobby space)

I caught a wonderful programme on TV a while ago, where pairs of builders competed to create amazing, complicated and artistic Lego exhibits. A real eye opener.

knittingaddict · 18/02/2022 23:18

Our house is geek central right now. Dining room table has my husband's model of the Millenium Falcon at one end (mid build) and my latest jigsaw puzzle at the other. In the kitchen I'm digitising my family history and when I have a spare moment I'm knitting. Lego modular buildings are displayed on the sideboard.

My adult daughter loves Lego and knitting and her partner is making some World of Warcraft models.

All these hobbies are sanity savers. Don't knock it.

SummerInSun · 18/02/2022 23:19

DH and my two DS all love lego. All give each other lego for Christmas. This year they gave me the Lego Christmas Santa sleigh with reindeer centrepiece and I built it on the evening of Christmas Day. Very calming and therapeutic!

LovelyYellowLabrador · 18/02/2022 23:19

Personally as a woman I love it
I find it a type of mindfulness where I totally switch off and I love doing it

TheMeditativeRose · 18/02/2022 23:25

I like Lego myself. Also, better that than porn.
