To be surprised at the number of grown men into lego

A couple of years ago I was moaning that I had no idea what to buy DH (40) for Christmas. Three men who sit near me immediately suggested a Lego millennium Falcon. I asked DH if he would like this (it’s expensive!) and his eyes lit up. Since then for most birthdays and Christmas I have bought more Lego kits for him (including a home alone one this year!)

Since WFH due to COVID I see into everyone’s home study in zoom calls; and loads of the men in their 30s and 40s have loads of Lego on display; particularly of the Star Wars variety!

Aibi to be so surprised at the number of men Who are so into Lego?

cestmoi123 several people I know have made vases out of Lego for the flowers set.

loobylou44 · 18/02/2022 21:31

My house is full of Star Wars Lego from my nearly 50 year old husband. My 17 year old daughter has caught the Lego bug as well and has a nice collection in her room.
Our bedroom is the only room in the house, other than the bathroom, that doesn't have Lego in it!

oncemoreunto · 18/02/2022 21:33

@cestmoi123 love the flowers

BearOfEasttown · 18/02/2022 21:34

Have on of these @Aweefatcat

Biscuit

YABVVVVVVU!

My DH, my brother, and my male work colleague (who is also my friend,) have hobbies that are royally mocked by people like you, and asked why aren't you into football/golf/cycling/running? DH says 'not sure why you care to be honest.' Confused

No-one EVER slates men who are into sport, but royally mock men into sci-fi, or hobby/collectible type stuff. Boils my fucking piss. Why do people have to mock and deride things they don't understand? It's small-minded and pathetic.

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 18/02/2022 21:35

Women too. I need more Lego.

tintodeverano2 · 18/02/2022 21:37

My partner adores Lego. It's a bloody expensive hobby though. To be honest I don't mind as he could have worse hobbies.

Aweefatcat · 18/02/2022 21:37

@BearOfEasttown I’m very sorry that I’ve upset you.

I am genuinely surprised though about how popular it is. The amount of colleagues (always been male colleagues) who have Lego in the background is just very surprising to me. I hadn’t realised it was such a mainstream thing that sooo many men do it (if it was just one or two I wouldn’t have thought much of it)

Soooo... my teenager has just been offered a part time job at a Merlin theme park. And they will soon qualify for the staff perks ... which it turns out includes 40% off Lego.

40%!!!

Never have certain adult family members been quite so excited about one of our children's achievements!

Aweefatcat · 18/02/2022 21:39

And I find it an awful lot more interesting than football/ golf which I mentally switch off if anyone discusses

Well there's no need to be so sorry @Aweefatcat but thank you anyway...

It just really irks me this kind of thing, because my DH and my brother AND my friend at work are always getting bashed and mocked and derided for not having 'sporty' hobbies, and having so-called 'nerdy' hobbies - (mostly by men but sometimes women too!) and your post just hit a raw nerve,

MorganKitten · 18/02/2022 21:41

I’m not, it’s fun and creative.

Woo hoo! Well done him! Grin

@BearOfEasttown it’s really not mocking. It’s a majority of men interest in my company it seems from looking at the shelves in zoom calls: and from the fact that my 3 team mates recommended it as a present for my DH:and we’re full of “I told you so” when I said he loved it. Many of the same men also like football golf cycling etx. But honestly: that’s dull as hell and my mind skips over it

YABVVVVVVVVVVVVU.

I have a lot of lego. I am definitely not a man.

19lottie82 · 18/02/2022 21:46

I LOVE Lego 🥰 I’ve just finished the piano and I am about to start the typewriter.

Check out yourwobb dot com 👍

I have horrible memories of building the bloody Ferrari Pit Lane with DS2, and being so irritated by the whole thing. I couldn't do it for fun.

He also had Spongebob Lego, and houses etc. He built them, then they just sat in his room gathering dust. I was never sure whether he was meant to bash them up and build it again but he never wanted to. then bit by bit pieces dropped off then disappeared and what was left got put back in the box never to see the light of day again. What are you supposed to do with the built stuff?

It seemed better when he just had the loose bricks and used his imagination.

Findingapath · 18/02/2022 21:50

YANBU totally agree, it pisses me off that lego is all DH wants as a present, we now have over-cluttered displays of dusty lego models taking over all the shelves in our office, pushing the lovely family photos to the back of the shelf out of view.
Instead of continuing to hoard more and more lego every birthday/Christmas I have suggested rebuilding existing sets but he laughs at this like I’m clearly missing the point. Angry

WonderfulYou · 18/02/2022 21:52

I love Lego! But I’ve never brought it for myself! I just buy it for my DD and help her build it.

After reading the replies I’m definitely going to be buying myself some!

Blossom64265 · 18/02/2022 21:52

I’ve got both the R2d2 and the typewriter waiting to do. I just can’t decide which one to do next.

Theluggage15 · 18/02/2022 21:52

I love Lego. Was very happy to get a bookshop to build this Christmas.

MrPenguinsPoppers · 18/02/2022 21:52

I built the huge disney castle over lock down last year. Allowed myself a bag a day.
Kept me sane tbh.

@WTF475878237NC

I cannot believe I had never heard of Bricklink!
I discovered it years ago when my son was mad for Lego batman and was desperate for the joker's ice cream van which was a retired set that cost a silly amount of money as a collectors item. I downloaded the instructions and ordered all the parts off bricklink. Great site for lego addicts Grin
SoMuchToBits · 18/02/2022 21:55

Nothing wrong with Lego at all. Ds had loads as a child. He also had a lot of Playmobil. I now have his Playmobil, have added a lot to it and make my own dioramas. Currently running my winter PlaymOlympics.

I think children's toys as an adult are fab. A way to be creative and much better use of time than playing games on screens. Smile

CaptainHammer · 18/02/2022 21:58

Love Lego in this house (male and female in our thirties) and would have a lot more if we had more room!

steff13 · 18/02/2022 21:58

I really want the little piano.
