To be surprised at the number of grown men into lego

A couple of years ago I was moaning that I had no idea what to buy DH (40) for Christmas. Three men who sit near me immediately suggested a Lego millennium Falcon. I asked DH if he would like this (it’s expensive!) and his eyes lit up. Since then for most birthdays and Christmas I have bought more Lego kits for him (including a home alone one this year!)

Since WFH due to COVID I see into everyone’s home study in zoom calls; and loads of the men in their 30s and 40s have loads of Lego on display; particularly of the Star Wars variety!

Aibi to be so surprised at the number of men Who are so into Lego?

You are meant to use the Lego as a training tool as an inspiration to build real things.

Though I'm now wondering what the next level building is after millennium falcon 🤣

DD2 (21) has just finished Titanic. It’s HUGE! We had to source a sideboard to fit it on.

Wow. I'm not really a fan of Lego but that is incredible.

SkiingIsHeaven · 29/05/2022 14:19

Another older lady here. Love my Lego. DH now starting to join in when I do it.

A life sized working model would be brilliant, to be honest. Grin

darisdet · 29/05/2022 15:31

🤣

Brefugee · 29/05/2022 19:29

Sorry, not sorry, it's pathetic.

aw did you step on a lego brick in bare feet?
What, as pp have said, is really pathetic is trying (and failing) to piss on other people's chips.

The polaroid camera is great, I'd vote for that. And I've just seen the Stargate thing got enough votes (yaayy) and there is a working model of the solar system that has also got enough votes and i really want that one. It is a harmless hobby and the only real problem is that it's plastic and every piece of lego that has ever been manufactured still exists.

SoMuchToBits · 29/05/2022 19:40

I guess if playing with Lego as an adult is classed as pathetic, then so is setting up scenes with Playmobil. Which is a shame, as several MNers have enjoyed my Playmobil "events" over the last few years. But I'll keep doing them even if some people think I'm pathetic! Smile

Jalepenojello · 29/05/2022 19:43

I LOVE Lego. It’s just a 3D puzzle ☺️ But I have no room to store it really so invest in helping DS with his sets over Xmas mostly, but I can totally see why adults would get it. Life is more fun when you remember we can still be big kids 🙂

jarviscockatiel · 29/05/2022 19:56

If anyone fancies a different model, there are wooden ones made by uGears, a Ukrainian company still producing from Ukraine. My DH is very impressed with them.

Was that you? No, you can't stop with the playmobil!

SoMuchToBits · 29/05/2022 21:27

@darisdet Don't worry, I'm not giving up! There will be scenes later this week actually! But I don't care if people think I'm pathetic anyway. I have many friends who like what I do, and even though some of them think I'm a bit bonkers, they still enjoy it. Smile

pinkwednesday · 29/05/2022 21:29

Men AND women! Back ground of my meeting is mainly Lego I now realise. Selection of mine, kids, and husband's!

darisdet · 29/05/2022 21:30

Glad to hear it! It is a bit bonkers, but only in a good way.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 29/05/2022 21:35

Lego is completely gender neutral and for all ages, surely?!
So YABVU as it's completely normal to be an adult and into Lego!

I don't see that as a problem - unlike most plastic things, it's infinitely reusable.

Chouetted · 29/05/2022 21:41

(with the caveat that we really need to stop losing the damn stuff overboard in transport)

Ponderingwindow · 29/05/2022 21:47

That the bonsai tree is composed of hundreds of frogs brings me great joy on a regular basis. I just look at it and can’t help but smile knowing about it’s froggy secret.

DrDreReturns · 29/05/2022 21:47

I got this Lego Bonsai tree for my wife at Christmas. She loved it!

To be surprised at the number of grown men into lego
DrDreReturns · 29/05/2022 21:49

Just seen someone else had mentioned it - I should read the whole thread first!

Ponderingwindow · 29/05/2022 21:51

Lego and playmobil aren’t pathetic. I find the people interested in them tend to be far more interesting on average than the people interested in all sorts of things like football and dating shows because they are hobbies that require active engagement and quiet contemplation. I wouldn’t call someone pathetic just because they enjoy spending time doing something I don’t though.

Only several MNers? Think it's a lot more than you imagine SoMuch. Your scenes, and impressive collection of playmobil, are a delight.

OMG I hope this gets made if only for the minifigs! Teal'c with one raised eyebrow and Daniel with his thinky frown face. 😄

Sorry, not sorry, it's pathetic

My pathetic toy brick collection not only holds it's value, but in some cases has doubled or even tripled in value. I don't see that as wasted money.
Spending money on something you find massively creative and enjoyable also isn't a waste.

SoMuchToBits · 29/05/2022 22:06

Thank you @Whatsnewpussyhat ! Smile

Agree. Op on the other hand comes across as very small minded. Maybe she is confusing the adults she knows who are using still using duplo lego.

DoctorManhattan · 29/05/2022 22:14

I have a Lego Batmobile which I’ve been slowly building for months. There’s thousands of pieces. I’m not Lego obsessed or anything, but I got it as a present and must admit I do enjoy pouring a drink and sitting for an hour or two just working on it when I need some quiet time from the madness of work and family life.

For others, it’s model trains or reading or playing a musical instrument or whatever - it’s just become a hobby. And there’s a sense of achievement when you finish it.
