I know there are other threads on this but I thought it would be interesting to get a vote. Seems most people are in favour. I'm not

I say we get rid of all of them and elect our head of state. The heritidary principal is so outdated as to be laughable - especially if you do a tiny bit of digging into the royal family tree.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 06/02/2022 08:27

@NoJaffaCakesAreKeptInThisVan

Their relationship has never sat right with me and I don’t think Prince Charles should be king. Going on his brother’s behaviour, that generation have outdated attitudes and not a true representation of how younger men and women hopefully are nowadays and how women should be treated by men.

I’d much rather Prince William.

I don't think Prince William is as squeaky clean as you think.
NiceShrubbery · 06/02/2022 08:29

The world moved on years ago OP. Perhaps you should too.

Very funny. Most of Western Europe had moved on by 1946, by becoming republics. The UK was too dozy and sleepwalked straight back into the Middle Ages.

IncompleteSenten · 06/02/2022 08:30

I'd rather the monarchy was abolished altogether but since that probably won't happen any time soon then 🤷‍♀️ why not?
She'll be the same as the queen mother was and how Catherine will be. Not queen in the same way the current one is because they are queen by marriage not by birth.

If the reason you think she shouldn't have that is because of their affair then it takes 2 and by that logic Charles shouldn't be allowed to be king.

if you're looking for a royal family member who's never fucked around on their spouse you'll have to skip straight to George right now. Before he becomes an adult.

The aristocracy seem by and large to be prolific shaggers. It's a different world with a different set of morals.

I know. We got rid of them then invited the fuckers back! 🤦

@FrecklesMalone

Charles should have been allowed to marry her in the first place. It would have solved a lot of heartache all round.
You are quite right. The idea that he had to marry a virgin was totally ridiculous.
TabithaHazel · 06/02/2022 08:38

I voted YABU but only because it has no impact on my life at all so I couldn’t really care less, but I personally think the royal family should be abolished anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

anon12345678901 · 06/02/2022 08:38

I don't see the issue, both Diana and Charles cheated in the marriage, yet Diana never seems to be slated for it. Their marriage ended a long time ago and Prince Charles is happy with Camilla, so what's the issue with her being known as Queen.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 06/02/2022 08:40

Yeah, replace the monarchy with Politicians, because they have such high morals...Don't you Boris?🤦‍♀️

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 06/02/2022 08:41

The only reason I would be hesitant about this development would be if William and Harry were strongly against it. But - as far as it is possible to tell - they seem to be at peace with Camilla becoming Queen in due course.

(Though Harry's memoir-to-be might indicate otherwise!)

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/02/2022 08:41

@DickMabutt73962

Guess we'll never know OP's reasons 🙄
I'm gutted 🙄

I'm another that isn't bothered about Camilla being Queen. It was utterly ridiculous when there was talk of her being Princess (Consort?)

Charles and Diana were as bad as each other. They both had affairs. I don't think we can sit here and vilify him whilst holding her on a pedestal.

Diana moved on before her death. Its madness that people are still angry on her behalf. I can't imagine she'd give a hoot if she was still here.

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/02/2022 08:42

Life goes on, the pair of them behaved dreadfully towards Diana who was just 20 when they married, little more than a child really. Almost certainly a virgin as that was what was seen as suitable for a Prince by the old men running things back then. I think Prince Charles treated Diana terribly badly, she was like a lamb to the slaughter looking back (I'm old enough that I've watched this all unfold, not taken a view from the latest "story". Camilla is complicit in all of this by hanging around and them carrying on l. The marriage never really stood a chance. It's clear now with the benefit of hindsight that he should have been allowed to marry Camilla in the first place rather than the damaged goods line at the time ruling that out.
The 70's when all this really took root (royal marriage was 1981) were very different times especially for women which I think a lot here really can't/don't appreciate.

I think the Queen has been very clever doing this actually. Should head off a massive row once she's gone.

IncompleteSenten · 06/02/2022 08:43

I wasn't aware we could elect the monarchy

DisforDarkChocolate · 06/02/2022 08:43

She'll be married to the king. That's it for me.

Now, if you'd asked me if I think Charles should be King I'd ha e said no. I'm for abolishing the monarchy now.

Blinkingbatshit · 06/02/2022 08:43

I think this Country currently has bigger worries…. Yabvu

hellosally · 06/02/2022 08:46

if the queen gives her blessing, that's good enough for me. she knows what she is doing after holding down a job for 70 years, unwaveringly, without being ousted, the most famous woman in the world, when feminism was unheard of,only in her 20;s when her father died and had to go straight into it without an ounce of self pity. my respect for her has really grown over the years.I cant imagine anyone doing this today without moaning, needing counselling, outpouring and oversharing on social media etc.

Fuckitydoodah · 06/02/2022 08:48

I'm all for it. Go Queen Camilla!!

What reason could you have for not wanting it?

God no, it'd be a disaster if elections in the past 20 years are anything to go by.
And there'd be even more arguments, abuse and complaints about people being stupid because they don't vote the same as you.

DePfeffoff · 06/02/2022 08:49

@StrawberryPot

I’ve really never understood the vitriol directed at Camilla.

She was shagging Charles before and during his marriage to Diana. It didn't just start when Charles and Diana began to drift apart.

Camilla also knew that Charles loved her not Diana, but did nothing to stop the very young, naive Diana from marrying a man she thought loved her.

Do you honestly believe she could have stopped her?

None of us know exactly what went on, these judgments based on newspaper gossip are pointless. If Ann Boleyn could be Queen whilst her husband's first wife was alive, to say nothing of her successors, there is no reason why Camilla couldn't be.

Notwithittoday · 06/02/2022 08:51

I also think he’ll abdicate to William. I don’t see him on the throne

gogohm · 06/02/2022 08:52

@Chichimcgee

Me neither, Charles is past retirement age and seems genuinely happy with his life, but I don't think they would ever tell us in advance if this is the intention plus I suspect it will depend on whether it's very soon or the Queen lives as old (or older) than her mum. William is still raising his little kids

crazyjinglist · 06/02/2022 08:54

I'm a republican and would prefer that we ditched the whole lot when the present Queen dies. If that doesn't happen, though, Camilla should be Queen, because the wife of a reigning King is the Queen. There's no test of character involved. That's how the monarchy works - and I don't see that she's any worse than the rest of them anyway.

Exactly this.

LakieLady · 06/02/2022 08:54

I'm a republican and would prefer that neither of them were crowned anything. The monarchy should end when the queen dies imo.

But given that we seem to be stuck with this archaic institution for the foreseeable, I think it's fine. She seems to be a decent woman, puts the work in, hasn't shown any signs of having paedo friends or anything else shameful, so I can't see the objection to it.

It must be 30 years since Charles and Diana separated and 25 or so since she died. It's time to move on.

Gowithme · 06/02/2022 08:55

Queen Consort is not the same as Queen Regent. Camilla will be Queen Consort because she'll be married to the King. Why wouldn't she be?

I always found Diana to be highly manipulative, knowing exactly the game she was involved in. Diana knew exactly what to say and do to appear the poor innocent victim, she was more socially savvy than Charles IMO and knew how to court the media better than anyone. She only had to bat her eye lids coyly.

Anklebiter999 · 06/02/2022 08:55

@AuntyJanet

If he’s the King, then his wife is Queen. That’s the way it works.

Having said that, I don’t really give a shit one way or the other.

No, it doesn't! The OH of a reigning does not automatically become king or queen. They are a prince or princess until the title king/queen consort, orking/queen is bestowed upon the. Prince Albert remained a prince, and there are plenty more examples in history. And if people knew history, they would know that for denturies, in any country where a royal family existed, marriages were not love matches. Royal children were married off for poltical gain and to ensure allies. The heir had to marry a virgin in order to ensure that no other could kiss and tell, and to be sure the woman had not previously had children. So, Diana, whose family were probably historically more royally connected that Charles, knew what it was about...
