I know there are other threads on this but I thought it would be interesting to get a vote. Seems most people are in favour. I'm not

apologies for the typo's, trying to do type without specs!

MyOhMySimon · 06/02/2022 08:57

Just going to repost here and say YABU. In the grand scheme of things, this is neutral/good news (couldn't care less) compared to the shitshow going on in the RF. I've no time for them but surely Camilla being Queen consort is only normal, especially at this point.

We have chronic baby daddy, adulterer and serial cheater (among other qualities) BJ as PM, yet Camilla having a title and assuming a dress up role beside her husband of many years is a problem? Nah, who cares. It's not as if their
family are all virtuous people who've never cheated or worse.

Get rid of the lot of them, yes but if they're staying, she's "earned" her role.

endlesssighing · 06/02/2022 08:58

She’ll never be queen. She’ll be Queen Consort, it was a condition of their marriage.

queen consort is a posh way of say here’s the king and his wife. Kate will be the first Queen after Elizabeth.

NiceShrubbery · 06/02/2022 08:59

...when her father died and had to go straight into it without an ounce of self pity...

Elizabeth I, yes fair enough. Elizabeth II has simply played a lifelong film star role and cashed in massively at our expense. Some people worship strange idols.

Pyewhacket · 06/02/2022 09:02

@NiceShrubbery

The world moved on years ago OP. Perhaps you should too.

Very funny. Most of Western Europe had moved on by 1946, by becoming republics. The UK was too dozy and sleepwalked straight back into the Middle Ages.

By the end of the First World War in 1918, including Germany. And then they freely elected Hitler. The Russians went on to communist dictatorship and murdered nearly as many as the Nazi's.

That only leaves eleven sovereign monarchies in Europe : Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Andorra, Liechtenstein, and Monaco are principalities, while Luxembourg is a Grand Duchy.

Kate will also be Queen Consort.

Queen Consort means that you're queen because you're married to the king, and he's the one with the royal bloodline.

Queen Regnant means that you're queen in your own right because you inherited the throne (Elizabeth, Victoria, etc.)

theDudesmummy · 06/02/2022 09:02

Kate will also be Queen Consort, ie the wife of the king (if the whole nonsense lasts that long). As others have said, if you accept the whole premise of a royal family then the merits of the individual office bearers is pretty irrelevant.

AndAnotherNewOne · 06/02/2022 09:04

In law she'll be queen. So your opinion is unimportant.

Some fools seem to think fictional TV is real. It isn't.

PriamFarrl · 06/02/2022 09:06
  1. what difference does it make? It’s just an honorific title.
  2. why shouldn’t she? It would be the title she would be entitled to use.
  3. the Queen has said it’s what she wants. You don’t get to decide.
BadgerB · 06/02/2022 09:08

"I haven't watched it, but I suspect this narrative of Charles and Camilla being prevented from marrying in the early 70s emanates purely from 'The Crown'."
-------------------------
Not so. Well before "The Crown" aired it was said to be Lord Mountbatten, Charles's go-to "Grandfather", who told him he must marry a virgin so that no past lovers could sell scandals to the papers.

And when you think of Mountbatten's sex life.....!

DePfeffoff · 06/02/2022 09:09

No, it doesn't! The OH of a reigning does not automatically become king or queen. They are a prince or princess until the title king/queen consort, orking/queen is bestowed upon the. Prince Albert remained a prince, and there are plenty more examples in history.

The reason why male consorts don't become kings has been explained numerous times on these threads, and it proves nothing.

dworky · 06/02/2022 09:09

I'm more concerned with Charles becoming King, or William tbh.
Entitled, adulterous men are never going to be dutiful to the job.

HarlanPepper · 06/02/2022 09:11

I'm not a monarchist and don't give a toss who gets to wear the fancy hats, but in this case, the actual Queen has said what she thinks should happen with the succession, so surely that's that, whatever some mumsnet randomer thinks.

ColettesEarrings · 06/02/2022 09:12

Posted similar on the RF board, but some people ready need to get a life. Comments across the net are hysterical in every sense 😂

theDudesmummy · 06/02/2022 09:12

Entitled adulterous men are pretty standard in the history of the royal family.

Itsmemaggie · 06/02/2022 09:14

I voted YABU under current rules it is what it is. However, I actually don’t think she should be Queen because the monarchy is an outmoded institution that has no place in a modern democracy.

AlandAnna · 06/02/2022 09:14

I’d vote but I don’t give two craps about the monarchy

Badbaddog · 06/02/2022 09:18

The Queen is an awesome example of endurance and I rate her hugely. Charles is no fit successor for her, a 31 year old who married an innocent 19 year old though he knew he didn’t love or respect her. A horribly weak man. Bring on Anne or Kate when HM goes. And please, a republic??? A politician as head of state, looking to the next election????

IamnotSethRogan · 06/02/2022 09:19

It's all nonsense and pantomime and makes fuck all difference if she does or doesn't

MyGPsurgeryisUseless · 06/02/2022 09:20

I actually really like Camilla, I’ve met her once and she’s come across as a very kind, genuine person. She does some really good charity work. Im not really bothered by who did what 25 years ago!!

I prefer Camilla to Catherine 🤷‍♀️

Also don’t give a fig about the royal titles

LittleDiaries · 06/02/2022 09:21

@ComtesseDeSpair

I’ve really never understood the vitriol directed at Camilla. Charles and Diana were both unfaithful and they were in a miserable marriage which everyone around them knew had become a sham. It wasn’t as if Camilla seduced a man away from his innocent and blissfully happy wife who thought she had the perfect marriage and husband.

Frankly I doubt either Charles or Camilla are much interested in whether they get called King or Queen, despite this odd view in the media that Charles is desperate for his time to come. I expect they’d both rather be pottering around doing their own thing.

Agree. Camilla was allegedly who Charles originally wanted to marry, so his first choice. If they'd been allowed to marry back then, there wouldn't have been the unhappy marriage to Diana, and she would have been free to make her own choices in life.

And, at Charles and Camilla's age, most people would be happily retired and enjoying a bit of travel (of their own choice) and time with their grandchildren, not thinking about taking on a massive new stressful job.

UthredofBattenberg · 06/02/2022 09:21

I dont care much for the monarchy, but why shouldnt she be?

Maybe with the death of Phillip the Queen has looked back and reflected on Charles and Camillas relationship. Esp given they were known to be in love, prior to Diana and were not allowed to be together.

Do you think Charles should be crowned King?
CotswoldWoolly · 06/02/2022 09:21

@dworky there’s actually a school of thought that says poorly behaved monarchs make better rulers. I don’t subscribe to it myself, but some historians do.
I don’t really see the point of monarchy - it’s primary purpose seems to be just another way of reinforce the inequality present in our society by dint or birth. I truly hope the monarchy dies with our current queen.

LagunaBubbles · 06/02/2022 09:23

Does it really matter? What will happen will happen no idea why some people seem to care so much.
