To think that 1 jacket potato is the normal amount to have??

I've been seeing lots of jacket potato photos for some reason in my FB feed. And LOADS of people are having 2 potatoes??? There are normal size jacket potatoes.

Have I been missing a trick?

I might have two if they were very small, but then the trouble is you get too much skin. One large is ideal, or one and a half if medium sized.

harrystylestaylorswift · 03/02/2022 21:18

For dinner, I'll have two with tuna mayo and cheese. And gherkins chopped very finely in the tuna. I'm always stuffed after it and could definitely make do with just one and a half. The Asda 'special' range potatoes are so nice and buttery. Worth the £1.20 for 4. Usually decent sized too, I'm just greedy Wink

BoredZelda · 03/02/2022 21:20

@Shitandhills I hate frozen potatoes, I know the taste you are referring to. But I can’t really tell the difference between frozen baked potatoes and baked from fresh. The bonus is, they are a whole lot quicker and if you microwave them then stick them in the oven for ten minutes the skin goes really crispy.

blyn72 · 03/02/2022 21:21

@BigValue

I share one with the children. No toppings, just butter and salt.
How many children and how old? It must be one big spud.

I love jacket potatoes.

Skepticlove · 03/02/2022 21:23

Surely it depends on the size of the potato, the appetite of the person eating it and what it's served with.

liveforsummer · 03/02/2022 21:26

@HarryDresdensLeatherDuster

Have to say I do not get the obsession with jacket potatoes and nearly fell off the sofa at several points in this thread - main meal?? Who eats a potato as their main meal?

The reason you all need to eat two is because you are not eating enough protein or proper leafy veg to fill you up.

The potato is just the carb - we have it as an evening meal with loads of butter and cheese, around half a tin of beans each, tuna, mayo and sweetcorn, some sweetcorn on the side too, coleslaw and of course a MASSIVE (mumsnet registered trademark) salad so plenty leafy veg plus tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, red onion
itwasntaparty · 03/02/2022 21:29

Depends entirely on the size of the potato, if I order in the online shop we invariably end up with two huge and two tiny so we swap halves to get a normal one each. Only ever have them with chilli and cheese.

RampantIvy · 03/02/2022 21:30

This thread is making me want a jacket potato Grin

I find a medium potato (about the size of an orange) with chilli and coleslaw, tuna mayonnaise and salad or cheese and beans is enough for me.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/02/2022 21:31

Just 1, but I'm abroad and jacket potato's not such a thing here so I get two smaller ones.

Lalliella · 03/02/2022 21:32

Why are people taking photos of potatoes and putting them on FB? Saddos!

DieSchottin93 · 03/02/2022 21:34

1 if it's a big one,or a sweet potato as they always seem to be enormous Grin Otherwise 2, especially if I'm having them after coming back from the swimming pool in the evening - I'm always ravenous by then!

Dibbydoos · 03/02/2022 21:37

@Gowithme

Yeah I would only eat one - it seems like an awful lot of carbohydrate to me otherwise.
As a diabetic, I agree we need to eat carbs, fats and proteins in moderation. 2 x baked potatoes is too much. I mostly can't finish 1 with my cheese and beans toppings!! But I always eat the skin, yum!
SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 03/02/2022 21:38

A jacket potato and beans is definitely a full meal. But I had soup for dinner last night which has previously been decried by MN as not a real dinner so what do I know.

Chely · 03/02/2022 21:39

Unless it's a huge one I will have 2 for a main meal. They have got much smaller over the years.

OnlyTheBravest · 03/02/2022 21:49

Bottomless teenagers 1.5. Rest of us 1 each. Normal sized potatoes.

knittingaddict · 03/02/2022 21:49

@Singlebutmarried

We have three between us. But only one if they are huge taters
This.
Puddlelane123 · 03/02/2022 21:50

Surely the most disconcerting thing is that 6 pages of posts into this subject and there is only one mention of Brian Harvey.

But it's not just a potato is it...?

It could be a potato, chilli con carne and salad.

Or with cheese and beans...

Or Tina mayo and salad.

What's wrong with that? Confused

PunsDontKillPeople · 03/02/2022 21:52

But... You can microwave a potato for 5 mins then whack it in a hot oven for 10 mins, and it's perfect. How could a frozen one be more convenient? I don't get it.

Soup is not a dinner? Fuck that. Soup is dinner if you have it for dinner. Cake is breakfast if you have it for breakfast.

There are very few perks to being an adult but goddamnit I'll have whatever the chuff I want to eat 😁

Stopsnowing · 03/02/2022 21:53

I think baking potatoes are getting smaller.

Wife2b · 03/02/2022 21:54

Depends, for lunch I’d have 1. For dinner I’d have 2.

nosyupnorth · 03/02/2022 21:54

You realise that mumsnet attitude to food means you're going to be bombarded by posted going 'a whole potato! i could never be so gready, half is plenty' and 'half?! think of the carbs. we cut one into chip sized portions and share it between a family of eight'

a large potato is 250-300-ish calories, served with plenty of toppings it could easily be made up to a standard meal, but equally two is perfectly reasonable with lighter toppings or as a big meal, it really just depends how you serve it

Because people have been doing this for decades.... Have you not noticed the bazillion food photos out there??

@harlanpepper don't you start 🤣😂 Dd2 asked for prawn cocktail for dinner (eats at school) - I added Jacket potato because I needed something more substantial.
Dd1 aged 10, in covid isolation declared it wasn't a dinner it was a lunch.
