AIBU to think that fat women are overlooked?

Mylittleponyskinnyandbony · 31/01/2022 23:08

I didn't use to be fat.
In my twenties I was slim - curvy but slim.
I could lie down and my stomach would dip in as I had so little fat on me.
Fast forward twenty years.
Add in three children.
Add in depression and emotional eating.
I'm fat. I get overlooked all the time in everyday life. I get judged all the time and not kindly neither. I look in the mirror and I'm the fat old dinner lady I used to make jokes about when I was younger. You get the picture. AIBU to think that fat women get overlooked - for promotion, for ideas, for their knowledge, for their hard work for everything they do. Just because they are fat. This post may read very bizarre if you aren't fat and once upon a time I would have eyerolled at this too. But now I'm writing it. So AIBU?

@missperegrinespeculiar

I mean, there is actual research that proves that fat people are discriminated against, it's not a matter of opinion. We know it's true.

Also, it is not about how fat people carry themselves, you can't outrun fat phobia by being confident. That's actually a little victim blaming!

Yes, fat people are stigmatised badly it’s true!

But it’s also likely to be at the hands of other fat people (not just ‘skinny’ people) who also moan about being judged.

So what is the solution?

Quincythequince · 01/02/2022 13:11

The OP even said that she made fun of fat people when she was a child, although I had thought she was slim when younger (her OP said as much), but then she subsequently said she wasn’t. So she was ow herself and making fun of other ow people.

So it would seem based on this thread, that it’s probable that a disproportionately higher number of fat people (more so than thin people, based on UK prevalence) are being unkind to other fat people because they’re fat, but don’t want people being unkind to them because they’re fat!

People just stop being arsehole and mind their business!

@1forAll74

There are differet types of women who are classed as fat or obese,. It depends on their personalities,if they get over looked, or not. There has been quite a lot of chunky women on Tv programmes of late,, even on strictly come dancing., and cookery shows. they all have great personalities. and get to wear lovely clothes, and good makeup. And then there are other fat people, who seem to spend all their time eating everything in sight, have bad diets, and just give up wanting to look good,, and maybe overlooked as been said.
Thanks for clarifying on the "two different types" of fat women. Which category do I fall into? Hmm
Quincythequince · 01/02/2022 13:23

She didn’t say there were two different types Gin and the comment was targeted at you specifically!

Interesting response though!

And? I’m allowed to contribute! What’s it to you?

People’s perceptions and anecdote, don’t override evidence and data!

I have repeatedly said I work in this field, in a public health capacity! It is of professional interest to me.

There’s a lot of persecution complexes on display here, which is very unfortunate!

I wonder how many people are overlooked for reasons that are nothing to do with their weight but don’t realise it.

nationwde · 01/02/2022 13:32

YANBU
And there is some awful woman trying to stop shops displaying fitness clothes on 'fat' mannequins.
How else are 'fat' people supposed to get 'slim' and as perfect as her if they don't see fitness clothes in their sizes?
It isn't about normalising fatness, it is about not discriminating against people who are 'fat' and not 'othering' them and saying they should not been seen, should be invisible.

People like her highlight that the worse human characteristics are in human personality not human body size.

Ah good, glad you're here then. So how do you think we solve the issue of HCPs blaming the cause of all fat peoples health issues on them being fat, even when they can prove the health issues started when they were slim?

They need far, far better education and professional accountability!

GPs know sod all about obesity! Sod all.
They think everything that happens to you if you are fat, is because you’re fat. And they’re wrong!

They don’t understand public health, personal and environmental psychology, poverty, food supply chain, metabolism, behavioural addiction.

I could go on!

Something massive needs to change, but who starts this and how? I don’t know.

It’s something we talk about a lot, but to no avail!

Politicians and civil servants don’t give a crap!

MedusasBadHairDay · 01/02/2022 13:57

I think part of the reason nothing gets better with healthcare is that people do believe that fat people don't deserve help or support. That we need to be punished somehow.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 01/02/2022 14:00

"I'm the fat old dinner lady I used to make jokes about when I was younger" Hmm

Also, your username is the first line from an unpleasant rhyme from I was at school - and I'm ages with you so I'm guessing you're referencing it? I don't believe it's just coincidence Hmm If you were the type of young person to make jokes about fat old dinner ladies I imagine you knew the rhyme.

*I'll put it in a separate post as MN may well delete if for being offensive, which it is and apologies for quoting it but I think people should be aware of the reference in your username (which no doubt you will deny!)

Yep, fat people are blamed! And they receive substandard care as a result. The average physician should hang their heads in absolute shame!

Rachel Batterham (a physician and obesity researcher), a very empathetic HCP has done a lot of work on this and highlighted serious failings in treatment!

It needs to be fixed.

The rhyme/song was

My little pony skinny and bony
Made out of plastic
Looks like a spastic

But of course it is a complete coincidence this is your username @Mylittleponyskinnyandbony.

I'd name change if I were you.

ForeverSingle881 · 01/02/2022 14:04

Sounds to me like your massively holding yourself back. You need to tackle your depression and lack of confidence.

GrannytoaUnicorn · 01/02/2022 14:05

YES!!!! My Mum thinks I'm being paranoid but it's true. I get spoken to as if I'm a bit.....simple? For want of a more PC expression. It's infuriating. Especially as I've been a size 6 in the past and I know what it's like to be slim. I was treated with ten times more respect. Now I'm treated with disdain

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 01/02/2022 14:06

I thought MN auto-blocked that word.

beechie12 · 01/02/2022 14:07

I notice men in work have less time for the overweight women. It's horrible. It's subtle dbut I do believe it's there. Whereas I don't think women treat fat men any differently.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 01/02/2022 14:11

@PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat I did wonder that when I posted, but maybe not as it's a medical term which is still used (my consultant used it to me in regards to muscles which really made me Shock but I also think it can be genuinely used for cerebral palsy spasms). I remember school fund raising for the "spastic society" when I was at school, but they name changed their name.

I fucking hated that rhyme, "spaz" was also a popular insult - and this was an

MedusasBadHairDay · 01/02/2022 14:14

Tbf I remember that poem from when I was younger, and don't remember that word being used at all, so the OP may not either.

5128gap · 01/02/2022 14:15

Wow. Those lyrics are not the ones I know to that rhyme which was something to do with the pony falling into a fire and melting? The boys used to tease the girls who had the ponies with it. I've never heard the ones quoted.

TheGoldenWolfFleece · 01/02/2022 14:16

Isn't he/she just. Same old, same old. We try and talk about something we have experienced there's always someone out there shouting over us that we are wrong.

I agree. I remember the lyrics to that rhyme as being “My little pony, all skinny and bony, went to the stable, did a poo on the table.”

I think it’s really out of order to accuse another poster of being disablist based on a reference to a schoolyard skipping rhyme with loads of different variations.
