Neighbour stole my delivery?

Eleanr · 31/01/2022 19:26

Have NC as I don't want this linked to my other posts. Could be outing.

I ordered a £600 item online. Normally when I order expensive items I have to give a code, which is sent via email, to the delivery driver.

I was out today and got an email to say my package had been delivered. There was a picture included, which was very obviously my neighbour.

I thought, great, that's fine! We often take parcels in for each other. When I went to collect it from her she denied all knowledge. I was a bit flustered trying to take the dogs/ shopping inside so I just said "oh okay there must be some mistake" and went into my house.

Now I've looked closer at the pic just to make sure and it's definitely her house, she must have jt!

What would you do? I don't want to accuse her of stealing, but.... ?

She's protesting about it so much, plus the photo, and now it's miraculously turned by via anonymous hoody man 🤣 She knows it's obvious what's happened, you know what's happened. I just wouldn't engage with her anymore on this.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 03/02/2022 10:01

A wide birth. Ouch! 😂

BuanoKubiamVej · 03/02/2022 10:14

You know the saying "Least said, soonest mended"? That applies here. You have your parcel. It no longer matters what she has or hasn't done. There is no need to argue with her ridiculous over-defensiveness. To be honest you haven't deal with this brilliantly. You aren't supposed to play detective. It's crappy of delivery companies to expect neighbours to act as unpaid parcel collection point services, they do no checking for honesty and reliability, and it's the business's fault when things go wrong.

I think you should text an apology and ask for the whole incident to be forgotten. Something like

"I am really sorry I know I could have dealt with the whole thing better. I should have just reported the missing parcel to the delivery company and/or police right from the start and let them deal with it rather than hassling you. I apologise for stressing you and I hope we can forget about this and carry on as before."

In the event that she receives a parcel for you again she will then know that you will kick off a formal investigation if she tries to nick it, so you should be ok.

Huh?! Biscuit

Yes, absolutely! Apologise to the thief OP, in fact, it's creme egg season so send her a dozen of them and a Fortnum & Mason hamper.

This place sometimes. I'll swear people post just to be contrary.

😂😂😂

Whywonttheyhelpme · 03/02/2022 10:40

@BuanoKubiamVej are you the light fingered neighbour by any chance? 😂

Why the hell should the op apologise to someone who stole her parcel & yelled in her face?

Mollysocks · 03/02/2022 10:40

These are the sort of people these nobrains prey on. They know who hates confrontation and who to take advantage of…again and again. I can’t believe anyone thinks this is genuinely a good piece of advice.

FurbleSocks · 03/02/2022 10:51

@Eleanr

Thanks guys, just relieved I've got it. She hasn't messaged me back and I don't think we'll ever speak again after this. Oh well!
Just remember that if you two don't speak again it was because she tried to steal your £600 item NOT because you politely asked for her to give it to you. Her behaviour is on her not you.

Onlyhuman123 · 03/02/2022 11:04

Be glad you won't speak to her again. the bad behaviour is hers and hers alone! I hope you do find the truth out via neighbours camera...

MayThePawsBeWithYou · 03/02/2022 11:07

She is protesting too much, why would some random bloke pick it up from her house.

ElephantOfRisk · 03/02/2022 12:07

I think most peoples first port of call would be to their neighbour rather than the delivery company would it not? We and local neighbours often take in parcels, if I saw the photo and knew which neighbour it was, I'd just pop round and take it off their hands with a thanks for taking it in. OP did exactly that but the neighbour denied it. OP didn't know that the neighbour would do that. She had no expectation other than the same would happen as per previous deliveries and the neighbour would simply hand it over.

If it was genuinely not delivered to me (as the neighbour) I would be at least as invested in what had happened as the parcel owner. Not decide to be rude and arsey.

meercat23 · 03/02/2022 12:11

I think I would be tempted to say to the neighbour that if she had worries that I had doctored the picture to make her look bad she should report it to the police and or the courier and let them look into the whole thing. I wouldn't be holding my breath though.

Sideswiped · 03/02/2022 14:18

@BuanoKubiamVej WTAF?
OP should not have attempted to find her parcel, you know, the one she spent her hard-earned money on, when no-one else was going to bother?
Perhaps OP should just have anything she wants sent to her thieving neighbour in future and tell her it's by way of reparation?
Meanwhile, in the real world....

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/02/2022 14:32

@BuanoKubiamVej - so you think the OP should apologise to the person who stole from her? Would you apologise to a person who mugged you, or broke into your house?

Your post has to win the prize for the single safest thing said on MN this year.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/02/2022 14:33

Bugger - single daftest thing, not safest thing. Damn you, autocarrot. WinkGrin

appleturnovers · 03/02/2022 14:50

How embarrassing for her. At no point did you accuse her of anything, and if you saw your neighbour had been the victim of theft a normal reaction would be: 1. sympathy and concern for the neighbour and 2. general concern about your own household security. So the fact she went on a rant just shows she's guilty as hell. I'd definitely have some fun with it.

LookItsMeAgain · 03/02/2022 14:56

I am loving these eggcorns!!!

I was only watching a recording of Dave Gorman's "Modern Life Is Goodish" and that happened to be the topic of discussion! I was creased over laughing!

plantingandpotting · 04/02/2022 10:07

Thank you for giving me a good belly laugh on a Friday morning.

ginslinger · 05/02/2022 12:42

I'm glad you've got your delivery OP - I only popped in to see if you'd like a bargaining chimp

Candean · 09/02/2022 22:24
