To think people that rely on inheritance don't deserve any?

I have a friend (we are not close friends really acquaintances) that basically said her parents relied on inheritance to pay off debts and basically sort their lives out.

Issue is now that her grandparents have outlived their expectations so they are now having to sell the house and are in more debt than they anticipated.

AIBU to think it's disgusting to plan a timeline for an event like this? And it serves them right and I hope the money gets spent on something else?

Inheritance is something that you should consider and addition to your life, not a reliance.

AIBU?

It’s a bit silly to rely on it at a certain point to pay debts off. I don’t think it’s bad to think at some point you’ll most likely get one and can pay off your mortgage etc.

FangsForTheMemory · 29/01/2022 19:34

YABU to use 'basically' twice in your first sentence. You are also being judgy about people you don't know.

ClaymationHeartsStillBeat · 29/01/2022 19:34

Of course YANBU.

PearPickingPorky · 29/01/2022 19:34

YANBU.

Adults should stand on your own two feet.

Grilledaubergines · 29/01/2022 19:35

Weird logic. Yabu

AlDanvers · 29/01/2022 19:35

I think its daft.

But I also think this shouldn't be a qualifier for getting inheritance. I can see the connection tbh.

I fucking love this
southlondoner02 · 29/01/2022 19:37

Well it's a daft thing to do as the money could end up being eaten up by care home fees.

TheCanyon · 29/01/2022 19:38

Yeah it makes me really uncomfortable. I hope my parents spend every last penny. When they had a massive house fire my big brother said to me "that's our inheritance" , fucking vile.

PinkiOcelot · 29/01/2022 19:38

They’ve been rather stupid if they’ve got themselves in to even more debt thinking it would be paid off by an inheritance. Hoist on their own petard.

LonglegsMumtheBlacksmith · 29/01/2022 19:39

I think it's a bit unseemly to rely on it happening by a certain date so that you can pay off debts.
However, there are a lot of people who simply cannot afford to do things like buy a house until someone else dies. It doesn't make them less deserving, it's just a fact.

There's a difference between cautiously planning for an inheritance that you know you are due at some point in the future and gleefully rubbing your hands together whilst waiting for someone to croak it.

MooSakah · 29/01/2022 19:40

Inheritance isn't about deserving

NutellaEllaElla · 29/01/2022 19:40

In the specific example you describe, YANBU. But if you stand to inherit millions and millions, why would you bother worrying about making your own living. I wouldn't.

Jedsnewstar · 29/01/2022 19:40

I don’t understand your post op. Your friends parents or grandparents have debts? Is it then you are mad at or friend?

Can someone please explain what the heck is going on.

Porcupineintherough · 29/01/2022 19:41

Well nobody can count on an inheritance, which makes it foolish to try but disgusting?

GatoradeMeBitch · 29/01/2022 19:41

So an inheritance should only go to people if they can prove they don't need it?

WaningMoon · 29/01/2022 19:42

I’m not sure OP- I won’t be getting anything from my mum and dad because they don’t have anything to give , so I’ve always known there will be no inheritance for me, but I don’t begrudge other people getting money, or how they spend it.

XenoBitch · 29/01/2022 19:42

I know someone who is in a lot of debt (credit cards) and is relying on an inheritance to pay it off. That could still be years away, and in the mean time, their debt is getting bigger.

ShavingTheBadger · 29/01/2022 19:43

I wouldn’t consider mine an addition. I inherited £200k at 36 when my last remaining parent died - I’d give every penny I had to have them back.

Fairyliz · 29/01/2022 19:43

Only on MN does everyone want their parents to spend every penny of their money and get equity release on their house having a ‘good time’.
Nobody ever thinks about possibly getting a nice little inheritance and being able to pay off their mortgage Hmm

sometimespeopletakethepiss · 29/01/2022 19:44

No, apologies my grammar was a bit off in the original post!

I should have took time to read it back - I'm referring to my friends parents they are the ones who relied on the inheritance that would come from my friends grandparents.

I just find it distasteful.

sometimespeopletakethepiss · 29/01/2022 19:44

@Fairyliz there's a difference between it being a thought and being something to plan your whole life around though

BrambleRoses · 29/01/2022 19:45

I take a different view to the majority on here.

I think for most of us, unless we are unlucky, we will outlive our parents / grandparents and in most cases will get some money, even if it isn’t as much as it would have been because of care fees. And in some cases, there won’t be care fees at all.

I don’t think it’s really a bad thing to have it in your planning. We are considering private schools for DC and one factor in that is we know when things are really expensive (both in senior) there may well be an inheritance to soften the blow, which is not the same as wanting PIL dead! We just know it will happen, I suppose.

Hugasauras · 29/01/2022 19:45

I stand to inherit quite a lot but I would rather have my mum around for as long as humanly possible. Sadly she has Stage 4 cancer, but I would trade every penny of inheritance if it would fuck off.

I think people like in your OP are not particularly common.

HeartTerriers · 29/01/2022 19:46

You hope your friend's parents don't get the inheritance when their parents die even though they need money. That's a weird hope. You think that they are disgusting?
