To ask what salary...

prettyisall · 25/01/2022 18:39

I've just been having a chat with a friend about salary as he is currently on the look out for a new job, he was quite surprised when I told him my salary.

It's got me thinking, so what kind of Salary would you expect from this role?

Main duties:
Providing bespoke quotations to suit customers needs

Taking orders and entering onto account systems

Sending proforma invoices / taking payment

Putting together production sheets using formulas on excel for every order (always bespoke)

Answering phone and email queries

Outsourcing costs for components / ordering them when needed (this is not so often)

Taking care of all social media and website

Making Eflyers for marketing campaigns

All other basic administrative duties such as keeping spreadsheets up to date.

Location - Suffolk.
Time at Company - 15 years
Around 15 employees.

27k

When you say manage all social media and website, do you mean you have the responsibility of devising the social media strategy, presenting to stakeholders, managing the social media budget, employing freelancers to build apps, responsible (and targeted) for the success of the social media campaigns? Or do you just answer customer queries that come in via facebook/instagram/the website? And update the timelines as requested by someone else? And by manage the website, are you commissioning it, analysing hits, targeted to increase traffic, employ and manage freelancers to do the coding , responsible for increasing web sales etc? Or do you mean that sometimes you're asked to update a bit of text here and there, and answer "contact me" emails?
And again, the eflyers, do you manage the marketing budget, think up campaigns, present them to the board, project manage them and the associated staff, responsible for their success, or do you just type up and email out campaigns decided by someone else?

If you're just doing customer service/admin, then that's to be expected in an admin job, and your salary is about right (although very limited salary progression in 15 years)

If you're running marketing campaigns, managing contractors, managing marketing budgets and have responsibility for business growth, you are being massively underpaid. But it would be very unusual to expect someone who is mostly doing simple admin/customer service to also be responsible for a full on senior marketing role on the side!

Lastater · 25/01/2022 20:12

Starting salary of say 16-18k increasing to 23k approx.

Oblomov22 · 25/01/2022 20:12

Just seen update. Agree with your friend.

MegBusset · 25/01/2022 20:14

Salaries in Suffolk and Norfolk are shockingly low (ask me how I know lol)

I know many, many experienced people doing skilled admin work at 19-21k.

GreenClock · 25/01/2022 20:14

I’m actually quite annoyed about this! I think your friend is right. You’re underpaid.

I’d be talking to recruiters if they didn’t show me some respect and pay properly. It is about time they did.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 25/01/2022 20:16

You're massively underpaid. My assistant does far less than this and she's on 38k.

I'm annoyed for you. Send me your CV!

LondonQueen · 25/01/2022 20:16

Maybe 20-25k? I assume it's a junior position with no line management responsibility?

StarryNacht · 25/01/2022 20:17

I'd expect around 22-25k.

With your experience and a well-written CV, you could also look at moving into marketing or similar, which would probably pay more.

LondonQueen · 25/01/2022 20:18

An assistant on 36k is presumably in the South East or London?
Toomuchnow · 25/01/2022 20:18

£25k

Lastater · 25/01/2022 20:18

For the time you've been there, I would have expected a larger pay increase. In larger organisations its easy to move up the salary spine point each year until you hit the maximum available. Overall it adds an extra £1k a year which adds up nicely over a few years. This is nowhere near as high as a large private sector business, but it balances with quality of life. It sounds like you're happy but could reasonably ask for a little more.

Lastater · 25/01/2022 20:19

@Alonelonelylonersbadidea let me know when you're next looking for an assistant!

thepeopleversuswork · 25/01/2022 20:20

That's shockingly low OP TBH.

If you were in a really deprived part of the UK and it was public sector I'd understand but for your experience and where you are you're being robbed. Particularly as you've been there so long. It's not just bog standard admin either, there's social media and costing etc in there.

In London, private sector you'd be earning £10k a year more.

You should definitely be pushing for a pay rise.

altmember · 25/01/2022 20:22

My sister does a broadly similar job to yours, but for a large, national company. She doesn't do the social media side of things but is responsible for budgeting and quoting for contracts worth up to several million, often with very little oversight. She's in the midlands and her salary is low 20k's. Everyone thinks she's substantially underpaid for the level of responsibility she has, so it sounds like you are a bit too.

People local to me were discussing a job vacancy that's being advertised nearby - it's for a full time gardener, tending to what is basically a large allotment. Mainly weeding, digging beds over, planting vegetables etc. The salary is being advertised as £19,700, which I thought was quite a decent salary for the work involved. Then someone pointed out that that is actually minimum wage (from this April)! I'm self employed and don't earn anything near that much, so maybe I'm completely out of touch?

What I think is happening is that the minimum wage has been pushing up salaries for the most basic of jobs, but further up the wage ladder things haven't been increasing proportionally. So now there are a lot of people like yourself, and my sister, in skilled roles, with decade plus experience, that are being undervalued.

Consider if you left and your employer had to replace you, consider with someone completely inexperienced in your role, how much more value does you skill and experience add to that job?

Samanabanana · 25/01/2022 20:22

20-22k

Chocomelon · 25/01/2022 20:24

£25K

DillDanding · 25/01/2022 20:27

It sounds like a nice admin role. My admin team earn around 27k for similar.

itwasntaparty · 25/01/2022 20:31

3k in 15 years?! Have you asked for pay rises?!

Alwayswonderedwhy · 25/01/2022 20:32

17-22k

Where on earth do you live where you think someone with 15 years experience deserves a full time salary of £16,000? Somewhere in the third world? Good lord.

Yeah, and some......

For the princely sum of £20k. Hmm

ThePlumVan · 25/01/2022 20:36

Exactly!

It depends if there’s specific knowledge involved in the quote process.

If you’re just putting figures in a formula the £25k
If your specific knowledge comes up with those figures, and it’s not easy to train or replace, then anything from £45k upwards.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 25/01/2022 20:40

Massively underpaid...

Lidl doesnt pah much less for unskilled roles i think.

Id be writing out a list of all you do before your review. It sounds uoire ina very strong position.

People i know in these roles... Minimum of. 30k

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/01/2022 20:40

@thingymaboob

I'd say similar transferable skills to the office manager / admin person in my team so 22-24K?
About this. A chunk more in a bigger organisation.
