To think Molly Mae is getting shit because she’s a woman?

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 06:35

Yes, the comments are ignorant and naive. But I think people are going way too far with the abuse. I’ve seen many posts on social media (mainly from men) complaining about her comments and they have intentionally tagged really unflattering photos of her (like midway through talking) to the post where they go on like she’s the devil incarnate.

Many, many male celebrities have preached the same stuff. I have teen DD’s and DSD’s who all have male celebrities they are fans of and I’ve heard of these celebrities saying the same stuff. That if you work hard and “hustle” you will succeed.

There’s also lots of self-help Instagram accounts that preach the same stuff. These accounts are popular with young lads and are ran by men and seem to be aimed at men. Often they focus on cars and how you can have your dream car just like the guy behind the account if you follow his advice, buy his breathing technique course and work hard bla bla bla. These people don’t seem to get crucified the way Molly Mae has done.

Also a lot of male rappers who are popular these days such as Aitch make it their whole brand to show off about how they are successful because they took a chance and work hard bla bla bla. Aitch is a rapper from a very rough area of Manchester who got a lucky break. Molly Mae is more middle class but she went to a comp school and wasn’t outrageously wealthy. She just wasn’t on the breadline, why should she apologise for that? One of Aitch’s song lyrics is “I’ve got your boyfriend’s monthly wage in my jeans.” (DD loves the song). Nobody has ever come after him for that.

It seems to me that:

A man from a non-celeb average background gets a lucky break and becomes famous and rich and tries to inspire his fans to work hard and do the same = amazing and down to earth and inspiring

A woman from a non-celeb average background gets a lucky break and becomes rich and famous and tries to inspire her fans to work hard and do the same = a silly thick little cow who is only good for her looks and should keep her mouth shut and know her place.

I honestly believe if her boyfriend had made the same comments nobody would have batted an eyelid.

I don't know much about her but didn't she become famous from being on Love Island? If her success has stemmed from that, it's not surprising that people are scoffing at her preaching about "work hard and you can be like me".

It's a bit tone deaf when plenty of people work bloody hard and have very little to show for it. Did she acknowledge the massive luck involved in getting on love Island which started everything off, or was she just taking all the credit putting it down to "hard work"?

OrangeShark27 · 09/01/2022 06:41

I think what she said was stupid. But I think a lot of people are quite excited to be able to stick the boot in because she's a young woman and an influencer. She's saying no different to what lots of people have said over the years, and I agree had her boyfriend said it these men would probably put it up as an inspirational quote

LuckyMeISeeGhosts · 09/01/2022 06:44

or was she just taking all the credit putting it down to "hard work"?

She said that she "worked her arse off", which is obviously just laughable.

HollowTalk · 09/01/2022 06:46

Is this because of her interview on Diary of a CEO?

Amichelle84 · 09/01/2022 06:47

She's not getting shit because she's a woman, she's getting shit because she's a prick.

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 06:49

@OrangeShark27.

The teenage boys I know (relatives who I have on Facebook) are constantly sharing quotes by Tupac and similar such rappers saying how they “hustled” and “worked” and that’s why they are rich.

Yes I get people’s point that she’s only famous because of Love Island but she and Love Island are products of this society. Love Island predates Molly Mae. Half the people attacking her now probably tune in to every episode and should look at themselves.

Molly Mae had a cancerous melanoma removed not long ago and was brilliant at raising awareness for young people to never ignore moles and to always get them checked for cancer. She has endometriosis and used her platform to raise awareness of the condition, young girls are often conditioned to just put up with their chronic pain conditions.

She isn’t the devil incarnate that she’s being made out to be. She just made a silly comment.

Better than some male rapper making songs about drugs and objectifying songs about women’s body parts then having the audacity to claim they worked hard and are now rich because of how great and unique they are. Yet they are the ones that get known as inspirations.

I agree that women get worse abuse than men on average, and of course no one should be getting any abuse (as opposed to comments).

The comments Mollie Mae made were dreadful and if you are a social media influencer by trade, you are going to get high volume feedback.

The views Mollie Mae expressed are highly toxic bullshit, so it is good to have that widely discussed.

Testingprof · 09/01/2022 06:49

Yabu. You gave an example of a man showing off, that’s not nearly the same as what Molly Mae said.

Molly Mae essentially victim blamed all the workers her company underpaid and took advantage of. Maybe her workers should have worked harder and their £2.50 an hour would have made them millionaires at 21…

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 06:52

@Amichelle84.

Why didn’t Tyson Fury (yes I know her boyfriend is Tommy Fury and a different person) get crucified then when saying a famous quote of his “Anything is possible with the right mindset?”, “ “Foolish people follow the system, get caught up in media news, what the government wants you to believe and all the higher powers want you to believe and go down the same path as all the sheep in the cattle market” and “ If you want something that is very hard to get, you’ve got to sacrifice and dedicate and keep pushing no matter what, and never let anybody tell you you can’t. Because tonight, again, time and time again, I show you that it is very possible to achieve anything you ever want as long as you believe it in here”

Honestly how do you think black men such as Tupac (another of your examples) got any success. It wasn’t because they were a pretty young blond woman. If anything your comments are riddled with unconscious bias/racism.

IHateCoronavirus · 09/01/2022 06:54

She is where she is today because she sold herself out to a society who is entertained by misogyny, not through hard work.
To then imply everyone has the same 24 hours (to make money) is utterly disrespectful to the people who are actually working hard for minimum wage, often more then one job, just to cover bills.

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 06:57

It is absolutely nothing to do with race when I have mentioned her white boyfriend and a white male rapper Aitch before ever mentioning Tupac Confused

Your first sentence was a fair point, the rest random and uncalled for.

rrhuth · 09/01/2022 06:58

You can't compare sports to influencing in terms of work input.

workingtheusername · 09/01/2022 06:59

She made stupid naive comments but yes strong successful woman are regularly dragged down on social media.
Look at what happened with Caroline flack., she lost her job was slammed in press and trolled to death literally. When Ant Mcpartilin was charged with drink driving and went to rehab he still won at award shows for tv presenting and he wasn't even on telly. Jesy Nelson, Cheryl Cole, are a couple of other examples of women who have been attacked by media and online abuse. Society and the media regularly excuses men but attacks women, we are held up to a higher standard.

workingtheusername · 09/01/2022 07:00

But agree there's nothing wrong with healthy discussion about what she said.

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 07:01

@rrhuth.

Why not? Don’t famous premier league footballers just work a few hours a week but get paid astronomical salaries and are worshipped nationally?

Well, male footballers anyway. But that’s another thread.

Football players train for years and continue to train, they work their asses off to get to where they are. They don't just go on a tv show, have sex and get a contract handed to them. Molly Mae was gone deaf and doesn't acknowledge the easy starts she's had.

Marcus Rashford is a great example of someone who came from an underprivileged background and actually did work his arse off to get where he is now. And with his fame, he does great things - unlike her.

Simonjt · 09/01/2022 07:05

Shes getting shit because despite doing zero work herself beyond posing in swimwear, she is blaming people she chose to underpay for being underpaid, funny she isn’t working 12 hour shifts like the people in her factory.

No, sports people spend hours and years training in their sport, for most of us if starts as children and involves missing out on a ‘normal’ childhood, as an adult it often involves missing out on important events because flexibility, annual leave etc isn’t a thing. You’re whole life becomes work as you have to base your diet, your sleep, where you live etc all on your job.

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 07:07

Marcus Rashford is likeable and realistic and kind though.

I’m not saying Molly Mae is a talented hard worker.

I’m saying that it’s common for male celebrities to go on about “hustling” and “hard work” to reap the rewards and nobody seems to come after them. They are praised for it!

5 minutes on Instagram and you will see some twatty Instagram account with some prick going on about all of his nice cars marketing to young boys that they need to get off their worse and work and they will be like him. These aren’t sports players either, they are influencers as well. Nobody has called these people out.

No.

Most athletes start in primary school and have to train incredibly hard for a good decade before getting anywhere.

I agreed upthread about the general truth that women get more stick than men, but I think you're pushing your argument too far.

bcc89 · 09/01/2022 07:11

She said that we all have the same 24 hours in day and that she's "worked hard" 🙄 to get to where she is.

Stupid girl doesn't know what poverty is.

Nothing to do about her being a woman.

Mummadeze · 09/01/2022 07:12

I haven’t seen her comments or the backlash. But I actually don’t agree with a lot of what’s being said on here. A lot of young women go on reality shows but very few end up with a huge career like she has. She has been blessed with good looks but I think she has worked very hard since Love Island and has shown a lot of business acumen. I personally like her and I think good on her for making the most of her brief appearance on TV.

Cici22 · 09/01/2022 07:13

She hasn't worked hard, that's the reason. She's just sat in front of a camera and "influenced" people. Mainly young girls, to spend there money on stuff she's paid to promote. Then, gone on love island, because she was popular ends up being creative director of pretty little thing. That is not hard work!!! There's two different things. She's 22 years old. she's had it handed to her because she's marketable. So to sit there and claim she's even just like Beyoncé is pretty crappy as well. Beyoncé even grew up poor. Molly-Mae was just in the right place and the right time with the right kind of culture around to make her important right now. How people think what she said isn't an issue is beyond me.
