To think Molly Mae is getting shit because she’s a woman?

Yes, the comments are ignorant and naive. But I think people are going way too far with the abuse. I’ve seen many posts on social media (mainly from men) complaining about her comments and they have intentionally tagged really unflattering photos of her (like midway through talking) to the post where they go on like she’s the devil incarnate.

Many, many male celebrities have preached the same stuff. I have teen DD’s and DSD’s who all have male celebrities they are fans of and I’ve heard of these celebrities saying the same stuff. That if you work hard and “hustle” you will succeed.

There’s also lots of self-help Instagram accounts that preach the same stuff. These accounts are popular with young lads and are ran by men and seem to be aimed at men. Often they focus on cars and how you can have your dream car just like the guy behind the account if you follow his advice, buy his breathing technique course and work hard bla bla bla. These people don’t seem to get crucified the way Molly Mae has done.

Also a lot of male rappers who are popular these days such as Aitch make it their whole brand to show off about how they are successful because they took a chance and work hard bla bla bla. Aitch is a rapper from a very rough area of Manchester who got a lucky break. Molly Mae is more middle class but she went to a comp school and wasn’t outrageously wealthy. She just wasn’t on the breadline, why should she apologise for that? One of Aitch’s song lyrics is “I’ve got your boyfriend’s monthly wage in my jeans.” (DD loves the song). Nobody has ever come after him for that.

It seems to me that:

A man from a non-celeb average background gets a lucky break and becomes famous and rich and tries to inspire his fans to work hard and do the same = amazing and down to earth and inspiring

A woman from a non-celeb average background gets a lucky break and becomes rich and famous and tries to inspire her fans to work hard and do the same = a silly thick little cow who is only good for her looks and should keep her mouth shut and know her place.

I honestly believe if her boyfriend had made the same comments nobody would have batted an eyelid.

I don't actually know either of the people you're talking about but it doesn't sound like you can compare them exactly as one has a talent and the other doesn't?
That said, misogyny is still alive and well.

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 08:51

@Bringinglightandpeace

No, my point is that she categorically didn’t and said nothing of the sort. People are blatantly lying that she did.

@alphabetsoup1980

I've seen more stupid comments on here by people hiding behind their computer screens. Yes, she said something completely tone deaf....to be hounded in this was is also stupid though. I bet if she took her own life as a result, noone would realise that its the collective result of keyboard warriors gunning for her.
She makes money from being an influencer though, it's her career, of course people may more attention to her than someone posting on an anonymous message board. She knows she has a platform, it was a podcast she said it on not a chat to mates that was unfairly leaked; she wanted her message to be heard and if people reacted positively to it of course she would be happy with that, negative is the flip side of that and part of any job. Suicide is complex and although I agree platform's such as twitter should be better monitored and moderated, she could come off social media (but she won't as that's how she extorts money out of people's insecurities).
BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 08:54

@bcc89.

She helps my teenage daughter not feel embarrassed by her condition. Initially her doctor laughed at her when she first started having symptoms and said she was too young to have it.

It is enough for me.
There’s endometriosis charities then there are also other ways of representing it. Seeing somebody live a good life and talk about the condition they have and making a teenager suffering greatly with the condition feel less weird and alienated.

I came into this thread with an open mind, but now I’ve read all the posts and you’ve been given multiple reasons as to why what she said was crass and thoughtless. The main reason IMO being that she is representing a company that exploits its workers.
But you haven’t really acknowledged any of them and appear to have exactly the same opinion about it.
What do you think about her representing a company that’s practically involved in slave labour?

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 09/01/2022 08:54

Never heard of her before today.
It sounds like she's an already rich girl who went on a reality show and then took some selfies to flog cheap clothes; spouting off about how hard she works (whilst admitting she'd never do the twelve hour shifts her workers do).

What exactly am I supposed to be admiring?
She sounds awful, I don't think it would be any better if she had been a man, she's in a position of power and the best she has to recommend her is she talks about her own medical condition.
Lazy as hell, but I would be more forgiving of both Beyonce or Jay Z if they said it as they probably do hard work on tours etc.
Someone who sits on Instagram and uses filters is just doing what ninety percent of the population do, but in addition to a real job.

You want feminism to cushion this person from criticism. No sacred casts 'babe'.

Fuck sake, that was a joke. Nobody actually said that she said that. They were taking the piss.

ImInStealthMode · 09/01/2022 08:56

@Pugroll What I meant was that #BeKind certainly does not mean posting vile and abusive things on the internet directed towards a young Woman who made some stupid comments.

Openly and publicly wishing harm on a stranger for saying a few misguided words is not 'Being Kind'.

From some of the abuse I've seen you'd think she'd been skinning live kittens or kicking disabled kids in the face FFS.

But if she became the next Caroline Flack over it everyone would be out with their hashtags and their candles and their mental health memes again, until the next person makes an error of judgement and round we go again. It's sick.

Eleganz · 09/01/2022 08:58

Live by the sword, did by the sword I say. She is an "influencer" who makes money from her social media presence. She needs to learn a few lessons in PR clearly.

Men who say stupid shit also get slammed on social media, you just don't get the same profile made of it here or on mainstream media. Perhaps that tells us a lot.

AlternativePerspective · 09/01/2022 08:58

I thought molly may was a cleaning service? Ah well, who knew…

I don’t have instagram and have never watched an episode of love island in my life, so I have no idea who she, or any of the other celebs of the moment are, most of who will be has-beens in the next 5 years until they appear on “I’m a celebrity” at which point nobody will remember who they are.

But one of the reasons why I don’t identify as a feminist is because of this attitude that all men are bastards, and all women are victims who are only ever criticised because they’re women, never because they’re arseholes.

If you post shit on the internet then you do so in the knowledge that not everyone is going to agree with you, and that people are behind keyboards and not everyone will criticise in an eloquent manner. FGS you only have to look on AIBU to see how people can react, if you’re then posting 24/7 (or your PA is, on your behalf) then those same people and more like them are going to be critical.

Plenty of people are criticised whose life doesn’t evolve around social media. You only have to look at the abuse Marcus Rashford received during the euro’s final when he missed the penalty.

But if, like many people, you’re going to put repugnant views out there on a public platform, and from what’s been said on this thread the woman is pretty vile, then you have to take the rough with the smooth.

And just because others don’t get the same criticisms doesn’t mean that what she’s said should just be ignored.

Sivvyplath · 09/01/2022 08:58

This.

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 08:59

@LuckyMeISeeGhosts.

Yeah but she never implied that in any shape or form did she? There’s nothing to construct the joke from. It’s just daft.

Very bizarre.

Why do these threads always conveniently forget that Caroline Flack had lamped her boyfriend one and caused a serious head wound while he was asleep because she thought he was cheating?

It's almost how the whole culture is toxic isn't it. She's happy enough to exploit people to profit from it and feed into it though. CF had much more going on than some people being nasty online, I expect her family love her being trotted out constantly as an example though.

Iggly · 09/01/2022 09:01

She may well be treated more harshly because she’s a woman.

However that doesn’t make what she said any less jaw droppingly naive and appalling. And it chimes with a lot of what her followers believe, I suspect.

She’s popped up on my Twitter feed having never heard of her. I have now!

There are plenty of male entitled twats out there too such as Darren Grimes spouting nonsense.

Sexism is rife. But someone like Molly cannot use her femininity as a cover for what is essentially bollox.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 09/01/2022 09:01

No she's getting shit because she is vacuous, stupid and lazy but pretends to be something else. I hate this celeb for being celeb nonsense. Gemma Collins makes me want to throw things.

Footballers are (in my opinion) horrifically overpaid but they've worked hard to get where they are.

Was she the same woman who bought the poor puppy last year from Russia and was too thick to understand why she shouldn't have?

The only thing that’s bizarre is your obsession with her Wink

BlisterConcern · 09/01/2022 09:02

The backlash is ridiculous, over the top and undermining itself with it. She made a silly misguided comment and didn’t burn down a fucking orphanage.

A male influencer wouldn’t have gotten the same reaction, no way.

Giles Coren is a creepy journalist who made sexual comments about his 3 year old daughter, never seen that mentioned anywhere other than on Mumsnet. The was no national uproar.

Molly Mae makes a throwaway comment and the world implodes.

Because as someone said further back in the thread, 'be kind' means 'no one can ever be held accountable for anything they've done wrong' :)
ToykotoLosAngeles · 09/01/2022 09:03

Was she the same woman who bought the poor puppy last year from Russia and was too thick to understand why she shouldn't have?

Yep. But we're supposed to #bekind about that "influence" on people.

Cornisharchitect · 09/01/2022 09:03

@BlisterConcern the world hasn’t imploded and nor has the UK. She is barely famous! Most people don’t know who she is 😂

You need to calm down, your obsession isn’t healthy!

Emerald5hamrock · 09/01/2022 09:04

No her words were clumsy and thoughtless.
Fine if she wanted to describe her success without running down others likes she is special , works hard, therefore deserves it.
I know plenty of people who work very hard sometimes their hands bleeding from work, exhausted doing the night-shift before the school run.
She should have acknowledged her privilege and good looks, none of which she worked hard for.

Yep the one that died not long after she got it. Why would she care about another sentient being though or listening to the people who told her not to when the dog just went so well her with her designer tat? I don't think she's the sharpest tool though, shows everyone where she lives and always posts about when she's away from home and was surprised she got burgled?!
Rabblemum · 09/01/2022 09:05

Many black rappers came from poor backgrounds and has very complex backgrounds. Molly Mae was born pretty, had operations to make her prettier and got on a bed tv show. She admits she didn't come feom poverty too. Oh and the clothes she promotes are made by people who know what hard work is and get £3.50 an hour.

Yes being a woman holds you back in some ways but get your body out and sell your looks it's a money spinner.
