To think Molly Mae is getting shit because she’s a woman?

Yes, the comments are ignorant and naive. But I think people are going way too far with the abuse. I’ve seen many posts on social media (mainly from men) complaining about her comments and they have intentionally tagged really unflattering photos of her (like midway through talking) to the post where they go on like she’s the devil incarnate.

Many, many male celebrities have preached the same stuff. I have teen DD’s and DSD’s who all have male celebrities they are fans of and I’ve heard of these celebrities saying the same stuff. That if you work hard and “hustle” you will succeed.

There’s also lots of self-help Instagram accounts that preach the same stuff. These accounts are popular with young lads and are ran by men and seem to be aimed at men. Often they focus on cars and how you can have your dream car just like the guy behind the account if you follow his advice, buy his breathing technique course and work hard bla bla bla. These people don’t seem to get crucified the way Molly Mae has done.

Also a lot of male rappers who are popular these days such as Aitch make it their whole brand to show off about how they are successful because they took a chance and work hard bla bla bla. Aitch is a rapper from a very rough area of Manchester who got a lucky break. Molly Mae is more middle class but she went to a comp school and wasn’t outrageously wealthy. She just wasn’t on the breadline, why should she apologise for that? One of Aitch’s song lyrics is “I’ve got your boyfriend’s monthly wage in my jeans.” (DD loves the song). Nobody has ever come after him for that.

It seems to me that:

A man from a non-celeb average background gets a lucky break and becomes famous and rich and tries to inspire his fans to work hard and do the same = amazing and down to earth and inspiring

A woman from a non-celeb average background gets a lucky break and becomes rich and famous and tries to inspire her fans to work hard and do the same = a silly thick little cow who is only good for her looks and should keep her mouth shut and know her place.

I honestly believe if her boyfriend had made the same comments nobody would have batted an eyelid.

OP, despite frequent calls you've totally avoided the small issue of the sweatshop factory for which she's working her arse off masquerading on tv.

LadyWithLapdog · 09/01/2022 20:36

Can we just let this thread drop now? She's not worthy of our time or our children's.

Pinkrose1111 · 09/01/2022 20:37

Molly Mae is getting hate because she's a white woman who's perceived to be middle class (which I'm pretty sure she didn't grow up middle class). Who people feel like just got lucky by getting on love island. So people feel like how dare she speak on rags to riches when she has all this privilege. But the funny thing is alot of people have said this same quote that we all have the same 24 hours, and they have been hailed as inspirational heroes. I'm pretty sure Oprah said this aswell. It's a common phrase in the self-help/inspirational community. But when Molly mae says it she gets dragged? She may be a little bit naive but she doesn't deserve to get dragged liked this. I feel like people like to bully this young women for whatever reason they can. I remember on her season on love island it was going round on social media how Molly Mae is fake and she's just faking her affection for Tommy so she can win. And people were saying the most horrible things about her. And dragging her on social media because she was"faking" her affection for Tommy. When jokes on them because to this day her and her partner from love island are still together and have outlasted all the couple's. So my point is, it's not what she said imo that got her dragged because people say similar things all the time, but simply people like to target her and many other young, attractive, successful women for whatever reason they can find most likely due to jealousy. If it wasn't this they'd find another reason to drag her.

Againstmachine · 09/01/2022 20:42

I think that MM is getting shit for this long because she's a young attractive woman. A politician could say that and it would be forgotten 24 hours later.

Imagine you made your career by being on social media, no when that bites you back, you have to take rough with smooth.

She built her career by flaunting her self on insta and by love island.

Don't pretend she's some shining light she isn't.

Imposter1 · 09/01/2022 20:43

I honestly don’t see what the fuss is about.

She wasn’t wrong. There are plenty of people that come from shite backgrounds that are a success because they worked hard.

Anyone can choose to work hard at school (even if they have only one area they excel at) and apply for university and get a degree. My DH was very average at school and chose to go down a creative route. Now he owns his own business… it wasn’t easy and at 20 he was doing shifts in Sainsbury’s and trying to branch out in his own.

I think she was trying to be inspirational. Id rather that than a bunch of Twitter “experts” tell me I was doomed because I was poor.

No she wasn't she took part in a sex contest because she's good looking and used that to make her fortune

nuggetschicken · 09/01/2022 20:49

It implies that those who don't succeed haven't worked hard. People from shite backgrounds have to work a lot harder than the likes of MM to reach success, the problem is she refuses to acknowledge this and seems to think we all have equal opportunities. What she considers "hard work" isn't work to most of us. There's many reasons why it was an extremely important ignorant attempt at a motivational speech.

nuggetschicken · 09/01/2022 20:50

Sorry, ignore the word important in there. Predictive test.

nuggetschicken · 09/01/2022 20:50

Text! I give up 😅

KitBumbleB · 09/01/2022 21:02

PLT are not actually the problem is regard to the sweatshop. The factory makes clothes for loads of brands, including BooHoo, PLT, MissPap (sounds like a fart to me), Coat, Karen Millen, Warehouse, Oasis and more.

So are the employees of those brands just as culpable as Mollie Mae in regard to the sweatshop?

Is Jennifer Lopez culpable as she was the face of PLT?

Mollie Mae said a naïve and tone deaf comment that was well meant, lets not pretend she is running the empire here

I don't think she's a shining light but celebrity "scandals" like this are usually forgotten quite quickly because there's always someone new messing up.
misssunshine4040 · 09/01/2022 21:09

@BlisterConcern

It is absolutely nothing to do with race when I have mentioned her white boyfriend and a white male rapper Aitch before ever mentioning Tupac Confused

Your first sentence was a fair point, the rest random and uncalled for.

Aitch writes lyrics and raps which is a talent and a skill. He didn't just get lucky by appearing on the right tv show. I'm not sure what the comparison is. He also worked hard and had to work harder by coming from a disadvantaged background.

Molly mae is middle class with all the privileges that brings. She was scouted for live island and was lucky enough to meet Tommy and form a "brand" couple.

She is only a figure head for PLT, it's not as if she's actually doing any real work.

Her comments were so out of touch and patronising.

cherryonthecakes · 09/01/2022 21:12

I think that the fact that she was on a podcast called Diary of a CEO is laughable. What would she know about running a business when she was given a job that would have normally been given to someone with industry experience and qualifications?

debbrianna · 09/01/2022 22:49

I don't think she should get a "proper job" like some people are saying. They are doing what earns them money most would dream off. She needs selfwareness and I think this backlash will kick her up the backside.

Imposter1 · 10/01/2022 14:41

I hate the way people online are saying she doesn’t work hard too.we can’t all be doctors there has to be a variety of jobs to make society function.

Would we say that a hairdresser is not as hard working as a doctor? Would we say my job is easy because it’s office based? Do part time people work as hard? Does a supermodel “have it easy”?

Life without celebs, models and actresses would be very dull indeed. We enjoy, as a society, looking at pretty actresses, listening to talented musicians and laughing at comedians. To dismiss her as someone that went on a “sex show” is pretty offensive. I don’t want to live in a world where we all have “proper” jobs BORING

loveandroses · 10/01/2022 14:42

Isn't her career based mostly on having been shown having sex with someone on TV?

Imposter1 · 10/01/2022 15:36

I think her actual job is “influencer”. That’s how I know her. I believe there was more to her appearance on love island than “having sex”.

yomommasmomma · 10/01/2022 15:41

@Testingprof

Honestly how do you think black men such as Tupac (another of your examples) got any success. It wasn’t because they were a pretty young blond woman. If anything your comments are riddled with unconscious bias/racism.
Exactly this 100% everyday racism.

"Don't attack the pretty white lady, you should be attacking the black man instead".

Tupac had huge success against all the odds, a world away from Molly Mae who has got a few good deals against a background of huge white privilege.

hugr · 11/01/2022 08:27

@Imposter1

Well her actual job is Creative Director at PLT. A job for which there are plenty of people who worked many years to attain.
LovelyYellowLabrador · 11/01/2022 09:03

Surprising how many people here saying she famous for having sec on tv like she’s some sort of porn star, Hard times being a woman

Also sad how it’s the woman that are judged for doing that in love Island not the men
I thought we were better than this

LadyWithLapdog · 11/01/2022 10:08

Sadly, she did have sex on tv though.

IcyBlonde15 · 11/01/2022 10:21

If Molly Mae had sat down and said something akin to “yeah, I am aware I am successful because I’ve pretty privileged/middle class/ love island everyone else may as well throw their dreams in the bin, they’ll never have the opportunity to be successful so that sucks for them” she would be even more flamed then she is now! I think people have jumped on her because she didn’t articulate what she said particularly well. I don’t think she meant “work hard, you have 24 hours to have the exact life I have” as success and goals mean different things to different people. I think she just meant everyone has 24 hours a day to achieve the things they want, whatever that means to them individually, and not you can go on love island and be a CEO of PLT too. Also the host of the podcast seemed to agree with her and has agreed with similar things said on other podcasts and the internet didn’t turn on him! So yes, I think there is an element of her being jumped on because she’s a woman.

Emerald5hamrock · 11/01/2022 10:42

This would have been a perfect acknowledgement of her luck adding a message of support from family and friends.
everyone else may as well throw their dreams in the bin, they’ll never have the opportunity to be successful so that sucks for them.
Not true there are other pretty girls who will have the same opportunities providing their good looking.
Surprising how many people here saying she famous for having sec on tv like she’s some sort of porn star,
No not a porn star, though it did boost her rantings like previous reality TV stars.
KK comes to mind, not a porn star either but sex sells and she is proof.

LuckyMeISeeGhosts · 11/01/2022 14:25

Don't attack the pretty white lady, you should be attacking the black man instead

Spot on.

rainbowscalling · 11/01/2022 14:38

People saying that anyone who has found success driven by a social media following hasn't worked hard clearly actually has no concept of the industry or modern day marketing, especially in the fashion and beauty industry.

Yes there is a privilege to be addressed as she is a young, pretty, white female so this will have been easier to attain than for another person, but growing a social following as substantial as she has, at just 22, is not 'easy'. Especially in such an oversaturated market.

She had a following before love island, that was likely partly why she got on the show.

Yes what she said was naive, however was spoken to be inspirational vs offensive. And whilst I agree that not everyone has the same opportunities the alternative to saying 'you are in control of your success' seems to be 'your from a disadvantaged background so there is no point trying'.
