To hate cats

whatabelter · 07/01/2022 12:00

They keep shitting in my front garden. We have gravel down (not our choice - old owners and can't afford to change)
We live in a classic Victorian Terrance in SW London. There are cats everywhere but we keep getting crap by our bins at the front. I know gravel doesn't help but what can I do? It's driving me nuts. Ughhhhh

You are mean. Cats are brilliant. But yea, the gravel doesn't help .....they would see it as a football pitch sized litter box

Tal45 · 07/01/2022 12:12

Cats are ok as long as they're not shitting in other people's gardens. It wouldn't be allowed with dogs and shouldn't be allowed with cats and people should have to cat proof their gardens if they are going to let them out. They're supposed to hate citrus, could you put some orange peel down? Or lavender, maybe some pots with that in?

BeenHereForAges · 07/01/2022 12:12

Spiky leaves scattered around.
Lots and lots of spiky leaves.

YANBU its so gross.

Theunamedcat · 07/01/2022 12:15

Just get some repellent

If it doesn't work its foxes

itwasntaparty · 07/01/2022 12:19

Are you sure it's not fox? The foxes here like to shit on my doormat 🤮

RedCandyApple · 07/01/2022 12:22

Yabu 🐈

SummerLovin2022 · 07/01/2022 12:22

You can get peppermint pellets to deter them. It's on Amazon, called "Get Of". I used it when we moved into our home as their was a stray that kept shitting in the back garden and I had very young children. It works.

Larryyourwaiter · 07/01/2022 12:27

Can you temporarily get some netting and sticks and cover the area up. Cats will go in the same area out of habit. But I’d recommend some of the other suggestions at the same time.
Cats are still awesome though.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 07/01/2022 12:28

YANBU

Sundancerintherain · 07/01/2022 12:28

There is a spray you can get from B&Q.
IF it's not foxes.

They hate you too

stripeyflowers · 07/01/2022 12:50

My uncle had the same problem - he got one of those ultra-sonic sound cat repellent thingies in his garden. I think it takes a few weeks for it to be effective but I know he doesn't have that much of a problem now.

As for cats, I idolise them beyond words. Grin

hangrylady · 07/01/2022 12:53

This again!

gobbledygoook · 07/01/2022 13:01

I love cats more than life sometimes 😂

Repellent machines can work but take some time to work. Not all cats are bothered by them too!

Sprays / citrus peel / spiky things can work. Unfortunately gravel looks just like litter!

Could it be foxes or definitely cats?

I think the cats vs dogs argument makes no sense, cats have the right to roam, dogs don't - not the same thing. I personally hate it when dogs pee all over trees / walls / pavement, but meh what can I do!

BettyfromBristol · 07/01/2022 13:12

I have the same problem. We have a couple of ultrasonic devices which seem to help. Can't bear cat owners who think it's ok. One neighbour got upset when I used to ask her to come and clean it up, despite me having a video of her cat caught in the act. Someone on our local fb page was complaining that her cat kept coming home scared and drenched in water. Fifty fifty split between Oh the poor precious furbaby and Well, stop it shitting in other people's gardens then.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 07/01/2022 13:16

As a cat owner I agree it is gross but could be foxes? However cats are the best. I don't mind people soaking my cats or asking me to clean it up if needed. Don't really know what to suggest. I guess try some of the options above. Gravel is a nightmare we have some and including cats we have fixes and hedgehogs, poo everywhere 😁.

givemushypeasachance · 07/01/2022 13:19

Cats are legally 'free agents' because the law acknowledges that owners can't constrain them and aren't legally responsible for what they do. I have three cats and have three litter trays in the house for them, but only one uses them - I can't instruct the other two where to shit! I have a big tray of compost and sand outside to encourage them to do it here, and scoop that, but I expect they still do it in flowerbeds elsewhere as well. That's life. As is the fox poo on my driveway. Don't know what excuse the dog owners who don't pick up on the pavement outside my house is though - had to scoop some of that a few days ago...

Bowwowwowoh · 07/01/2022 13:19

I don't think you hate cats. You hate cat poo. There's a difference!

Pepper will deter cats.

Youaremypenguin · 07/01/2022 13:20

You don't hate cats (yabu) You hate cats shitting in your garden (yanbu). There are things you can do to prevent it. Its not the cats fault, it's instinct.

flossie47 · 07/01/2022 13:28

Oh good we haven't had one of these boring threads for a while.

YABU for hating cats because they have to shit like the rest of us. Appreciate it must be annoying but I am yet to meet a toilet trained cat. As cats are legally entitled to roam in the UK it's up to you to use a safe repellant to try and keep them off your property. Orange peel is supposed to be effective.

FYI other animals piss and shit all over public pavements and private gardens alike. Unfortunately it's part and parcel of sharing the planet with other species.

BasketBlocks · 07/01/2022 13:31

You’re not unreasonable, I don’t see the appeal either. But each to their own.

I don’t think my view is helped by one repeatedly using my front garden as a toilet.

DeepaBeesKit · 07/01/2022 13:32

If its next to bins I'm willing to bet at least some of the shit is from foxes.

Winniemarysarah · 07/01/2022 13:33

I agree with you op. I class them as vermin and treat them as such

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 07/01/2022 14:05

What @flossie47 said. I feel ridiculously proud of my cat when she comes in and then does a poo in her litter tray. I've seen her do it in my garden and would be unhappy if she did it in someone else's but unfortunately she ignores me when I try to instruct her 🤷🏻‍♀️
