To want the £10?

Advertised an old big unit on Facebook market place for £10, very clear it’s £10 on the post.
Arranged for someone to collect it when I was at work but DH at home.
Person arrives and tells DH that it’s free, he says ‘oh is it? Are you sure?’, and she said it was definitely advertised as free so he let her take it.

It was old, and slightly damaged, but something that could easily be painted over/done up.

AIBU to be pissed off she didn’t pay when it was clearly advertised in the post as £10 and she lied to my husband?
It’s only £10, it doesn’t make a difference to my life at all, it’s more the principle!

I did actually message her after and explain it clearly said £10 in the post but of course she hasn’t replied!

They saw an opportunity and tried it on. You won't get your £10 but try not to worry about it op. Very frustrating for you though.

I sold something a while ago. I think it was a handbag that was pretty much new but had been lying around for a while. I think I listed it for £5. I met the woman and she said 'oh it was £3 wasn't it'. Grabbed the bag and gave me £3 and walked off quickly. I couldn't be assed with the Agro of chasing her for £2. She knew though. She walked off quickly!

Frazzledstar1 · 02/01/2022 17:49

She is definitely a CF but I would have mentioned to DH that he was expected to take £10 from her.

Payitforward55 · 02/01/2022 17:49

She is a bare faced thief and liar!! I'm sorry you were scammed. The thief will have a very unhappy life.

eastegg · 02/01/2022 17:50

@Sirzy

You can’t shame someone publicly for taking something for free when they where given it for free!

Yes she was cheeky to ask but he still agreed.

Ah you’re one of those who think stupidity is worse than deceitfulness. Your moral compass doesn’t work quite the same as mine then.
Straycats · 02/01/2022 17:53

I did something similar, as part of the top section of the post had said free. Collected items got home relooked at post again, I was mortified, I went back and paid the monies, I ended up being given an additional little item.
If it was an honest mistake you deal with it, not ignore then block.
I hope you got a photo of it with her details and yes you've tried everything up to this point. I hate dishonesty and she'll do it to others who more likely can ill afford it.

Kittysummer · 02/01/2022 17:54

We tend to deliver items to people if not too far. Then we know where they live but don’t know where we live. Guaranteed we get the money.

expat101 · 02/01/2022 18:01

Report her to the mods as well as her blocking you. Hopefully if she was using her proper name to begin with, they will threaten to remove her from the page if she doesn’t settle up with you quickly.

Sportslady44 · 02/01/2022 18:02

Let it go.Its not worth any more hassle got ten pounds. Be more careful next time.

Precisely
Fabulousdahlink · 02/01/2022 18:08

All you can do is warn other sellers aboutvher- explain you did get in touch, and she's refused to pay, then blocked you.

JBut · 02/01/2022 18:11

It's called theft. The woman is a liar and a thief! I would name her on Facebook and make sure people know

Staffy1 · 02/01/2022 18:11

It’s not just your husband’s fault. It’s the CF who lied to him that it was free. Who does that, especially for something that cheap? No one would assume the was a lying CF, they would take their word for it.

CallmeBadJanet · 02/01/2022 18:18

I disappointed a "customer" who didn't read an FB ad properly, thought the item was free, didn't want to pay the tenner, was disgruntled, aggressive. The whole doorstep exchange was awkward but I'm glad I didn't cave and give it to her. Some people are just chancers, she probably figured she could trick your DH, she's left you in a really shitty position 😞

3plusonekids · 02/01/2022 18:20

I had a similar situation where I had sold a desk for £20 for a quick sale. He turns up (I tell DH how much as I wasn’t in) but man says he only has £15 and DH let it go.
There was no mention of bartering on the communication!
I was so mad! Not because I need the £5 but the underhand way he went about it.
I did message him and to be fair he replied asking me for my bank details or would drop off. The moment had passed and I didn’t reply.
Cheeky f*ckers!

Prescottdanni123 · 02/01/2022 18:23

Write a post on Facebook Market place. Tag the thief (because that is what she is) and say "Everyone be careful of this person and then explain what she did.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 02/01/2022 18:23

Cheeky bitch!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/01/2022 18:24

Yanbu but you should have briefed your DH- assuming he didn’t know already

Heatheroo · 02/01/2022 18:25

You should text her and tell her you're so sorry that she is so desperate that she would lie for the sake of a tenner, and that you hope she enjoys the freebie and the money because its obviously time she had a bit of luck.
Won't getbuour tenner back but hopefully her conscience will give her a few sleepless nights...

Bunnyfuller · 02/01/2022 18:28

I had it the other way round - sent DH to pick up an Arts and Crafts era dressing table. The address hadn’t mentioned any damage, but the seller assured my husband I was fine with it and was happy paying asking price. Numpty obviously didn’t ring me to check. I messaged her afterwards and she did apologise and said we could bring it back but it was far enough to not make it worth it. I hate FB selling, never knew there were quite so many rude, dishonest and CF people in the world!

Overtired201984 · 02/01/2022 18:38

Why is everyone so cheap and dishonest , she started the ball rolling by being a liar , that would piss me off .

Deffo out her on Facebook ( if you can do that now she’s blocked you )

Dnaltocs · 02/01/2022 18:40

Perhaps her need is greater. To you it’s nothing, perhaps to her it’s a lot. Some people work over an hour for £10
Perhaps to make you feel better you consider it a charitable act.

Is that a joke? It's never OK to be a lying scammer Hmm
Yuledo · 02/01/2022 18:42

I’d try to find a way to shame her somehow on the Facebook selling site. As you say, it’s the principle.

riceuten · 02/01/2022 18:46

This kind of thing happens all the time on Facebook/Ebay, when people come to collect stuff. They will exclaim 'I didn't know it was in such poor condition' and then 'I will give you a fiver for it'. Twice I have had people come to my workplace or home and try this one, the latter yelled '**ing timewaster!' when I wouldn't drop the price. My particular favourites are the 'collection only' ads I have placed that ask 'Could you deliver to Dunstable?' or 'Pay for it to be couriers and I will pay you back'. Yeah, right.

Mandyjack · 02/01/2022 18:46

Your husband should've checked with you!
