To want the £10?

Advertised an old big unit on Facebook market place for £10, very clear it’s £10 on the post.
Arranged for someone to collect it when I was at work but DH at home.
Person arrives and tells DH that it’s free, he says ‘oh is it? Are you sure?’, and she said it was definitely advertised as free so he let her take it.

It was old, and slightly damaged, but something that could easily be painted over/done up.

AIBU to be pissed off she didn’t pay when it was clearly advertised in the post as £10 and she lied to my husband?
It’s only £10, it doesn’t make a difference to my life at all, it’s more the principle!

I did actually message her after and explain it clearly said £10 in the post but of course she hasn’t replied!

@mylovelydd

I don't understand why posters are saying it's your DH that's at fault for trusting the word of some woman who asserted it was free. She was the one taking the piss. Why does someone being trusting = someone being a twit? Hmm It's a very victim blaming mentality.
Totally agree but this is mumsnet and husbands are always to blame and we should leave them asap.

If anything its the OP's fault for not clearly telling the husband that someone will be coming to pick up the unit and to make sure he gets £10 off them to pay.

KiloWhat · 01/01/2022 16:41

It's not your husbands fault really. The person doing the selling should be the one who's there for handover.

KiloWhat · 01/01/2022 16:42

If anything its the OP's fault for not clearly telling the husband that someone will be coming to pick up the unit and to make sure he gets £10 off them to pay. and even then if he gets fooled by someone then it's not his fault he's doing OP a favour by being in

SpiderinaWingMirror · 01/01/2022 16:45

Jeez.
If you've managed to come and collect a damaged item of furniture for free, you are ahead.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 01/01/2022 16:45

Sorry, put correctly.
If you have managed to get someone to collect damaged item for free, you are ahead.

bcc89 · 01/01/2022 16:46

If you've told your husband it's a tenner and he's given it away for free based on a stranger saying so, that's what makes it your husband's fault.

She's still a CF and a liar, but your husband was pretty stupid to not question it with you, if you told him it was £10 specifically.

InFiveMins · 01/01/2022 16:51

Some people really disgust me - I know it's 'only' a tenner but for all she knows you might have been waiting on that to buy food.

To be fair to your husband I think I'd have done the same as he did - if someone came to the door to collect an item that was a bit damaged and said it was free, I'd probably assume my DP had told them it was free and just give it to them.

You have my sympathies, OP.

LynetteScavo · 01/01/2022 16:52

@girlmom21 - if someone knocked on my front door and told me DH had said they could have our fairy I would laugh and ask why they needed it. I'd say they could borrow it but I needed it back. They might not bring it back, in which case they would be a lying thief or just bloody forgetful like most of my friends

The lady doth protest too much, me thinks.

Yes. You'd question it. Because it would be unusual.

I'm not protesting anything apart from the fact you're suggesting anyone with a bit of common sense is a skanky chancer.

Nocutenamesleft · 01/01/2022 17:06

It is theft!

Theft is explained as to deceive someone

The dishonest appropriation of property.

So ring the police.

godmum56 · 01/01/2022 17:06

well your husband owes you a tenner obvs

And the woman says "oh he said I could have it for free" and the husband said "no she lied about it being free" and the police say it's her word against his and so there's nothing they can do, and everyone's wasted police time and nobody's any better off (apart from the woman with the free cabinet)

"Skanky chancer" is not a phrase I would use personally. Grin

In obviously have different morals to some others on this thread.

Mls1984btc · 01/01/2022 17:10

Just let it go. Considered that £10 worth of bad luck that unscrupulous person has taken away from you. There really is no point blaming your OH about this. Just be careful next time he is told about the price night before.

Bagamoyo1 · 01/01/2022 17:16

@Passthecake30

If she’s desperate enough to lie about £10, and you don’t need the money, I’d let it go. And chalk it up to one of life’s lessons.
Desperate? Desperate for money would be working as a prostitute, or begging on the street for food. Not sneakily seeing an opportunity and telling a barefaced lie to get a free non essential item!
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/01/2022 17:18

skanky chancer

Ohh I think "Oi , you skanky chancer" might be my new go-to when someone drives the wrong way in the car park and nicks the space I'm waiting for !

LittleRoundRobin · 01/01/2022 17:20

@Cardio101 Wow what a cheeky fucker. Shock I would REALLY want to name and shame her, but I don't know if I would have the nerve. I would just block her. CF can't do it again then.

LittleRoundRobin · 01/01/2022 17:22

@Cardio101 I believe strongly in karma, so hopefully, she will drop a tenner out her purse when she is shopping.

I don't know why that phrase was even included in my post because it's not something I'd normally say but that's the perfect situation to use it Grin

This is the first thing that has made me properly laugh today! Grin

I will be desperately trying to think: "Oh, what common sense, why didn't I think of driving the wrong way and ignoring someone waiting?!"

Or maybe not Hmm

girlmom21 · 01/01/2022 17:26

Hey @LynetteScavo - that's a great way of completely missing the point and dragging down the mood again. Nice one...

Booklover3 · 01/01/2022 17:28

Let’s face it… it’s probably not the first time she’s done that.

Name and shame her.

Getyourjinglebellsinarow · 01/01/2022 17:29

Report her to fb you can do it from the messages, I've had to do it a few times for scam "buyers". Your husband owes you a tenner.

BrokenCopper · 01/01/2022 17:31

CFs like this doesn't amuse me anymore, I sometimes I feel like a mug having a bit of morality!

MerryChristmas21 · 01/01/2022 17:32

She's a CF, but it's New Year, you can afford not to have the £10, just let it go. It's not worth the stress! Look at it as a very cheap way to have the item taken away & have some extra space!!
