To think the Guardian is a joke re: JK Rowling?

So, the Guardian was running a 'person of the year' poll, and I voted for JK Rowling for her bravery in standing up to the extremist wing of the trans lobby.

I went to have a look to see when the results were out, and they've deactivated the poll! According to Twitter, it's because JK Rowling was the out and out winner.

If this is the case, this is PATHETIC.

Has this been verified in any way?

TeaAndStrumpets · 28/12/2021 16:22

Pathetic but quite funny. Yes, they are a joke. YANBU Xmas Wink

StoneofDestiny · 28/12/2021 16:24

Where did Twitter get this pearl of wisdom?

DillonPanthersTexas · 28/12/2021 16:24

Are you actually surprised?

Bit like that infamous list that was posted on various Comment is Free articles that listed the educational background of all the guardian journalists (90% of whom were public school and Oxbridge) that kept on getting deleted as it did not quite tally with the editorial line that lamented the lack of diversity in the Westminster village or other industries.

HermioneWeasley · 28/12/2021 16:25

What do they think will happen if they say she’s won the vote?

PeaceONoeuf · 28/12/2021 16:27

Oh I just went to look. So funny.

SoniaFouler · 28/12/2021 16:28

“According to Twitter”

Oh yes, that bastion of knowledge and truth website Twitter…

TeaAndStrumpets · 28/12/2021 16:29

The Guardian offices will spontaneously combust, there will be a plague of locusts/frogs etc. Just nasty awful things.
Firesidefox · 28/12/2021 16:37

I suppose I'm a bit surprised, to be honest. I think I would expect them to own it. Surely a sensible publisher wouldn't run such a poll without discussing a few 'what ifs'?

I expect the Guardian is counting on people not realising it/asking 'is this verified' like the odd PP above. Maybe it'll work?

And I love the notion of what they're afraid of, but JKR had a pretty terrible time, didn't she?

I forgot about this. How funny!

They're hoping it will quietly disappear I guess. Wtf won't they listen to their readership?

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 28/12/2021 16:53

The poll page has This form has been deactivated and is closed to any further submissions but no further explanation. You'd have thought they would have considered there might be a result they didn't like.

I remember the days when the Guardian was a respectable organ...

TractorAndHeadphones · 28/12/2021 16:56

Link please OP

Crazykatie · 28/12/2021 16:58

I expect somehow the voting and result was compromised somehow, the Guardian is a joke though

whachatalkinaboutwillis · 28/12/2021 16:59

Incredibly disrespectful to their readership. They remind of those Labour MPs who denounce working class people as thick racists rather than listen to valid concerns about empolyment and housing. The left is handing the country to the likes of Boris fucking Johnson when they will not listen. Appalling.

Berlinkreuzberg · 28/12/2021 17:02

Which mp is that @whachatalkinaboutwillis ?

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 17:06

@whachatalkinaboutwillis

This old tripe again? Got examples?

Thievesoil · 28/12/2021 17:07

The Guardian is a joke generally now. YABU for even participating!

Gordon Brown and his 'bigoted woman' remark in 2010 would be a fairly obvious example.

Waitwhat23 · 28/12/2021 17:16

Or more recently - labour-uncut.co.uk/2021/09/22/labour-is-losing-women-it-could-cost-labour-the-next-election-it-doesnt-have-to-be-this-way/

Rosie Duffield was unable to attend her own party conference due to to threats made against her due to her 'bigoted' views.

Toseland · 28/12/2021 17:17

That’s so funny but also chilling. The Guardian should be roundly mocked. Look how far they have fallen, they used to be a great paper, now just mired in lies and propaganda.
But it is the season of goodwill right Guardian?

SantaClawsServiette · 28/12/2021 17:19

Ha! I should try to keep a level of skepticism about the Twitter explanation, but the whole thing is so eminently believable that it is a struggle.

But it reminds me a bit of when they opened a page about dealing with comments on articles by their feminist writers like Laura Bates. The problem, they sad, was nasty men taking the piss in the comments about these serious articles. So many long time readers, many of them women, responded to them in some detail about why they had such issues with the columns and that if they wanted more supportive comments please get some better writers.

The Guardian response - keep the writers, stop opening comments on the articles, quietly remove evidence of the consultation.

ImmutableSexQueen · 28/12/2021 17:19

@Waitwhat23
I remember that.
I will also remember Kier Starmer and the cervix, David Lammy and the dinosaurs.

The Guardian needs to tell the truth re the poll.

Itsalmostanaccessory · 28/12/2021 17:23

@Waitwhat23

That woman was a racist bigot. He only said the truth. What she said was bigoted and Gordon Brown had to stand there and listen and reply as carefully as he could. Then, when he thought it was private, he said the truth about her. She was a bigot.

Signalbox · 28/12/2021 17:23

2021 isn't over yet. Perhaps will announce the winner on NYE.
