To think the Guardian is a joke re: JK Rowling?

So, the Guardian was running a 'person of the year' poll, and I voted for JK Rowling for her bravery in standing up to the extremist wing of the trans lobby.

I went to have a look to see when the results were out, and they've deactivated the poll! According to Twitter, it's because JK Rowling was the out and out winner.

If this is the case, this is PATHETIC.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

This is the narrative but actually immigration had little to no impact on the NHS or schools or anything else.

There has been one example given of someone being called a bigot, not lots of labour.

Its yet another trope on the Internet to pretend that Labour don't care about working people

Porfre · 28/12/2021 17:48

They could still announce the results??

Havent they just closed the nominations?

I'd probably wait a couple of weeks to see whether they announce anything.

TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 17:50

@Firesidefox
They won’t be announcing results - the Guardian does not do a Person or the Year award.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/12/2021 17:50

@DillonPanthersTexas

Are you actually surprised?

Bit like that infamous list that was posted on various Comment is Free articles that listed the educational background of all the guardian journalists (90% of whom were public school and Oxbridge) that kept on getting deleted as it did not quite tally with the editorial line that lamented the lack of diversity in the Westminster village or other industries.

They sacked Dawn Foster (working class, disabled woman) on Tom Watson's say so after she wrote a scathing article about him.Xmas Angry

It abandoned its principles and actual reporting of "News" a long time ago.Xmas Hmm

The Guardian did not run a "Person of the Year" poll. What they did do, was ask people to send in their comments on Time magazine naming Elon Musk as "Person of the year" and asked readers to tell them "Who would be your 2021 person of the year, and why?"

Now, it may be that a lot of people did suggest JK Rowling, but this was not a poll, and there was no suggestion that the results of the non-poll would be published. The Guardian do these "Tell us" pieces all the time. Recent examples are "Tell us: what are your thoughts on the Sex and the City spin off?, and "Tell us: has having a loud voice ever caused you issues at work?"

I write this as a strong supporter of the positions taken by JK Rowling. But this is not "chilling", and no vote has been rigged.

Away with your rational comment, don't you know there are pitchforks to sharpen Grin

As much as I'd have liked to see the guardian hold up JKR as person of 2021, I really don't think this is the conspiracy theory everyone is making out to be.

StillWeRise · 28/12/2021 17:51

why did they ask then???

Nancydrawn · 28/12/2021 17:52

This is such silly baiting.

It wasn't a poll, it wasn't deleted, and you're looking for offense where none has been given.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/12/2021 17:52

I refuse to think someone over there with more than a handful of braincells would have totally seen this coming. It seems they've been left with their pants down and the curtain open.

Lockheart · 28/12/2021 17:52

@StillWeRise

why did they ask then???
Because they ask for views on lots of things!
Nancydrawn · 28/12/2021 17:53

(I suppose I should say that's true if it was like all of the other Guardian 'Tell Us' pieces, which aren't polls and aren't serious.)

TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 17:55

@VladmirsPoutine

The story isn’t true.

That woman was a racist bigot. He only said the truth. What she said was bigoted and Gordon Brown had to stand there and listen and reply as carefully as he could. Then, when he thought it was private, he said the truth about her. She was a bigot.[/quote]
Can you explain what it was that woman said that you think was bigoted and racist please?

LuluBlakey1 · 28/12/2021 17:58

I subscribe to The Guardian but am finding it increasingly thin in depth and can't believe the ridiculous stance it takes on issues surrounding women/trans. Am ready to close my subscription but don't know what I would read.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/12/2021 17:58

@TheHamburgler So what's the truth?

This. It's not a conspiracy. And acting like it is just looks batshit. They asked for quotes for a piece in response to Elon Musk being named person of the year, they have now stopped asking for quotes (assume they are now writing their piece). Chances are they will use only a tiny number of the quotes, and yeah they'll probably downplay the numbers of us who said JKR, but it wasn't ever about a vote so we knew that was likely.
oakleaffy · 28/12/2021 18:00

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

I can't remember the ins and outs of what the woman said, but I do remember very clearly that Labour under Blair and Brown, with their enormous majorities, ignored the concerns of ordinary voters about immigration from the EU. They could and should have had a frank discussion with their voters about why they agreed to put no limits at all on immigration from the EU and what they thought the benefits would be. They could have reassured them that they would make sure school places, housing, NHS etc would have capacity to deal with all these new UK residents. Instead of which they shut all discussion down and labelled all the concerned people as bigots. People's concerns, founded or unfounded, didn't go away and we see the end result in the Brexit referendum.
Exactly this. Brexit was mainly won over migration worries and nothing else. Brexit has been a disaster- and still the U.K. has no control at all over its borders as the out voters wanted.

People were lied to.
Never should have been put to the people.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 18:00

This was obviously one of the guardian contribution sections where people leave their name and a comment and then it gets used in am article. Usually under some title like "get involved' or something they do it quite regularly

So not a poll at all.

Ah yes, 'We Got This Covered' that venerable, long-established, well-known, and reputable news source.

TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 18:02

@VladmirsPoutine

Short version: it’s simply fake news.

Longer version: See CharlieFarnsbarns123’s post.

PriamFarrl · 28/12/2021 18:04

I did see someone denounce The Guardian as anti trans on Twitter the other day.

DadDadDad · 28/12/2021 18:05

@StillWeRise

why did they ask then???
In the same way, in the same format they said Tell us what is your favourite spaghetti recipe

and didn't come back with a "In at number 3, with 750 votes, it's that's old favourite, carbonara! While new at number 2,..." - no, they just compiled an article a month later quoting the lengthy responses that they considered interesting: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/oct/22/it-tastes-like-holidays-readers-favourite-spaghetti-recipes

Beamur · 28/12/2021 18:06

Some things become news though don't they? Pretty much anything involving JKR does.

TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 18:11

In the same way, in the same format they said Tell us what is your favourite spaghetti recipe
What!!!?!? They cancelled the Spaghetti Recipe of the Year Award too? DISGUSTING. They probably only cancelled it because J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter and the Noodles in Sauce’ won.

bearandowl · 28/12/2021 18:12

The Guardian is a joke for virtually all news now - it is just a propaganda machine for our rulers and their agenda.
