To think the Guardian is a joke re: JK Rowling?

Firesidefox · 28/12/2021 16:19

So, the Guardian was running a 'person of the year' poll, and I voted for JK Rowling for her bravery in standing up to the extremist wing of the trans lobby.

I went to have a look to see when the results were out, and they've deactivated the poll! According to Twitter, it's because JK Rowling was the out and out winner.

If this is the case, this is PATHETIC.

Boaty McBoatface springs to mind.
Came on to write exactly this...

Sorry I thought I had posted about JRM calling people who went to Comprehensive school" Thick as potted plants", or the Britania Unchained mob saying that the British workers were "The worst idlers in the word" never mind all the fact that the PM called the working class "likely to be drunk, criminal, aimless, feckless and hopeless”
Also, just a couple of years ago JRM, currently leader of the Hoc, saying he and others like him would have been quicker to escape from Grenfell Towers as they would have had the sense not to remain in their flats. But that's nothing compared to a single Tweet from Emily Thornberry and what should have been a private remark by GB over a decade ago!

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

I've already given the nutshell summary of what she said on this thread, or you can go read it for yourself. The entire exchange is online.

Basically though, she complained that she had to pay tax when "these eastern European immigrants are coming over here" and "claiming" what she has been told she cant claim. Also some complaints about Easter europeans/foreigners taking things from her grandchildren.

What she said was 1) incorrect and 2) bigoted.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 19:43

@coffeerevelsrock

Exactly.

Oh and Michael Gove: " “happy south stamps over the cruel, dirty, toothless face of the northerner"

Yup. But its the labour party with their policies of investing in the north, higher minimum wages, lower inequality etc that are anti the working class.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

You are a perfect example of why we are in this Brexit mess, JohnHuffam1812.

Deny and ignore if it doesn't fit your narrative is what got us here.

This is perfect victim blaming. We are in this brexit mess because 17m people were "unwise" enough to vote for it. The buck stops with those who ultimately took the decision, and in direct democracy that is the people who voted for it.
JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 20:03

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

No we are in the brexit mess because of the people who voted for it.

These debates regarding immigration were had before the referendum ( as said prior in 2010 it wasn't a major issue).

All of the information was out there and available and plenty of people highlighted the untruths being told about immigration, especially EU immigration.

Why did they vote for it?

TheRemotePart · 28/12/2021 20:07

What exactly is it that JKRowling said that pissed the millennials off?

( side note: why do that generation get to tell everyone what’s what now?)

Is it because of her complaining about the removal of the word “woman” ? In place of shite like “ pregnant people. People who menstruate?”
Is that really why ?Or did I miss more ?
Cos tbh I find it offensive and I’m going to replace the word “man” with “people who ejaculate semen” or similar nonsense..
Are millennials actually buying or reading the guardian? Who are they acquiescing to?

I'm a millennial and I agree with everything JKR said. She's not upset me at all.
AuntyBumBum · 28/12/2021 20:10

Why did they vote for it?

About 17m different reasons. It's possible that some of them may even have got what they wanted. Mainly the rich ones who wanted to be able to shaft their employees more easily.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 20:10

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Because all the different special interest groups were promised their grievances would be solved by it.

Actually there was never any idea of what Brexit would look like put forward, precisely because it would have split the vote further.

If the deal they have now was offered, leave would have lost.

Theluggage15 · 28/12/2021 20:10

The Guardian is a sad joke. Nasty misogynistic rag. Panders to those still hung up on Brexit of course. I’m laughing at the Twitter comments though, so funny how frightened they are of JKR.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/12/2021 20:13

The Guardian is in a mess because it hasn't put up a paywall and has gone instead for a risky strategy of trying to pull in a global audience. A lot of its content is aimed at the US and Australia and they have a lot of US staff who are pretty vocal about anything they don't like appearing in the paper. Then of course they are afflicted by having Owen Jones as a columnist. They lost Suzanne Moore as a columnist because of Little OJ and his ilk writing an open letter to the Editor protesting about a column she wrote.

Of the old fasioned broadsheets the Guardian is the only one that has made a profit recently.

TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 20:26

This thread (and it’s poll results) are a wonderful example of the role of confirmation bias in the spread of fake news.

It should be alarming, but I guess that’s the world we live in now.

Or rather it is an example of women being so used to our rights being eroded and being told to be silent when pop our head up, that we naturally expect this and think "yeah that'd be right!" when we see the thread. Because we've come to expect it.
TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 20:34

Aren’t you just describing confirmation bias?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/12/2021 20:35

Happy to accept I was mistaken when I thought I was voting in a poll. I went onto The Guardian website and answered a question there which said something like 'Who's your Person of the Year?' and then a section on the lines of 'What are your reasons?' From the wording of everything I saw, I assumed they would publish the names of the most popular candidates and some of the reasons people mentioned. But now I know that's not a poll, that's just a bit of vox pop. Okaaaaaaaaaay...........

ForagingForMullberries · 28/12/2021 20:36

@TheHamburgler

Aren’t you just describing confirmation bias?
No I'm not, unless your definition of Confirmation Bias differs from the actual definition. Expecting something based on past behaviour is not even remotely Confirmation Bias.
JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 20:36

No doubt this will be used as an example of JK Rowling being cancelled.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 20:37

"Expecting something based on past behaviour is not even remotely Confirmation Bias."

But accepting something as fact when it isn't because it fits your current beliefs is.

That's not genuine, is it? It's littered with typos!

Sorry I thought I had posted about JRM calling people who went to Comprehensive school" Thick as potted plants"

Not heard that one before - is it an exact quote or did you spice it up a little?

Oh and Michael Gove: " “happy south stamps over the cruel, dirty, toothless face of the northerner"

You sound a bit desperate quoting Michael Gove from 1987 (student union debate).

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 20:43

@Clavinova

You sound a bit desperate quoting Gordon Brown from 11 years ago, but if that's valid then so is Gove.

Actually I linked to articles from 2014 and 2020;

Alex Cunningham's comment on the ‘bigoted' woman was 2014;

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/brown-was-right-about-bigoted-woman-says-mp-cdtt6tml38p

Neil Coyle's tweets were August 2020;

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/labour-mp-brexit-neil-coyle-proms-farage-jacob-rees-mogg-a9689776.html

Incidentally, I see that Neil Cunningham (Stockton North) was lucky to keep his seat in 2019:

Labour Alex Cunningham 17,728 43.1 −13.8
Conservative Steven Jackson 16,701 40.6 +4.1
Brexit Party Martin Walker 3,907 9.5
