To think the Guardian is a joke re: JK Rowling?

So, the Guardian was running a 'person of the year' poll, and I voted for JK Rowling for her bravery in standing up to the extremist wing of the trans lobby.

I went to have a look to see when the results were out, and they've deactivated the poll! According to Twitter, it's because JK Rowling was the out and out winner.

If this is the case, this is PATHETIC.

Doesn’t Justine’s DH work for the guardian? Editor or some such?

whachatalkinaboutwillis · 28/12/2021 17:26

@Berlinkreuzberg, I was thinking of Brown when I wrote it, also Thornberry's flag tweet.
@JohnHuffam1812 Telling people they are speaking 'old tripe' rather than asking for sources is also a poor way to engage discussion. I prefer to listen to people and address their concerns rather than insult anyone with a different view.
I was a life long labour party member but cannot support any group that fails some of the most vulnerable women in our country.

Ohbotherpiglet · 28/12/2021 17:27

I don’t really get this. I know a lot of people voted for Jk - but is there not a risk here you’re in your own bubble a bit? Maybe the poll closed and they will announce the winner alongside a long article about them in a couple of days? Or even New Year’s Eve? Isn’t that more likely than they just pull the whole thing because of Jk Rowling supporters?

SerendipityJane · 28/12/2021 17:28

Boaty McBoatface springs to mind.

dropthevipers · 28/12/2021 17:29

@NutellaEllaElla

They're hoping it will quietly disappear I guess. Wtf won't they listen to their readership?
Because being on the right side of History means anyone with a different view is just wrong.

Guardian is not a newspaper. It’s a student protest movement dressed up as a news outlet. The constant whining and the tone deaf approach in the articles is astoundingly oblivious to how most people really perceive identity politics in society. It cannot be taken seriously, although it’s incredibly disgusting if they de activated the poll because of this reason.

@AlternativePerspective

Doesn’t Justine’s DH work for the guardian? Editor or some such?
Not for many years. He went to Newsnight and then to C4.

Kath Viner is the current Guardian editor.

That woman was a racist bigot. He only said the truth. What she said was bigoted and Gordon Brown had to stand there and listen and reply as carefully as he could. Then, when he thought it was private, he said the truth about her. She was a bigot.[/quote]
I entirely disagree with what she said. It still stands as an example to illustrate what a pp said about calling their voters 'racist bigots' without engaging with them about their concerns.

inmyslippers · 28/12/2021 17:36

I'm not on Twitter can anyone please share what was said!

AuntyBumBum · 28/12/2021 17:39

You do know that anyone can post anything on Twitter? And sometimes people post things that might not be true.

CharlieFarnsbarns123 · 28/12/2021 17:40

The Guardian did not run a "Person of the Year" poll. What they did do, was ask people to send in their comments on Time magazine naming Elon Musk as "Person of the year" and asked readers to tell them "Who would be your 2021 person of the year, and why?"

Now, it may be that a lot of people did suggest JK Rowling, but this was not a poll, and there was no suggestion that the results of the non-poll would be published. The Guardian do these "Tell us" pieces all the time. Recent examples are "Tell us: what are your thoughts on the Sex and the City spin off?, and "Tell us: has having a loud voice ever caused you issues at work?"

I write this as a strong supporter of the positions taken by JK Rowling. But this is not "chilling", and no vote has been rigged.

@Waitwhat23

Her complaint, in a nutshell, was that she has to pay taxes whilst "these eastern European immigrants" come over here and claim things she is being told she cant claim.

His would you engage with that concern? You have to pay tax, and you vant get benefits if you dont qualify and immigrants coming over dont just get handed benefits.

She was a bigot.

gobbynorthernbird · 28/12/2021 17:46

Can someone screenshot the guardian poll page for me? I can't find an actual poll, active or not.

Andante57 · 28/12/2021 17:46

@DillonPanthersTexas

Are you actually surprised?

Bit like that infamous list that was posted on various Comment is Free articles that listed the educational background of all the guardian journalists (90% of whom were public school and Oxbridge) that kept on getting deleted as it did not quite tally with the editorial line that lamented the lack of diversity in the Westminster village or other industries.

It wasn’t just the journalist who were privately educated. The editor Alan Rusbridger and Polly Toynbee sent their children to private schools. There are probably plenty of other Guardian journalists who do the same. Guido Fawkes should look into it.
TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 17:46

The Guardian don’t do a Person or the Year award.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 17:46

God the Gordon brown bigot remark was not "'ignoring people's concerns about housing and jobs".

Fucks sake.

TheHamburgler · 28/12/2021 17:46

Or a Person of the Year award, for that matter.

crosstalk · 28/12/2021 17:46

Mole is to be congratulated. But I suspect some will take this literally. Can anyone link to the Grauniad's actual decision and explanation?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/12/2021 17:46

I can't remember the ins and outs of what the woman said, but I do remember very clearly that Labour under Blair and Brown, with their enormous majorities, ignored the concerns of ordinary voters about immigration from the EU. They could and should have had a frank discussion with their voters about why they agreed to put no limits at all on immigration from the EU and what they thought the benefits would be. They could have reassured them that they would make sure school places, housing, NHS etc would have capacity to deal with all these new UK residents. Instead of which they shut all discussion down and labelled all the concerned people as bigots. People's concerns, founded or unfounded, didn't go away and we see the end result in the Brexit referendum.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 17:47

So the guardian don't do a person of the year award ?

So it's fake news then.

DadDadDad · 28/12/2021 17:47

@CharlieFarnsbarns123 - at last, a voice of reason. It would be great to see the Guardian announce JKR as winner of a Person of the Year award, but as you say, they are not running any such award, never asked for nomination, and didn't open any kind of voting.

"Tell us your views" is something they do all the time ( www.theguardian.com/profile/guardian-community-team ), and on this occasion it was views on the Time Magazine's PotY.

coffeerevelsrock · 28/12/2021 17:48

I entirely disagree with what she said. It still stands as an example to illustrate what a pp said about calling their voters 'racist bigots' without engaging with them about their concerns.

He tried really hard to engage with her concerns but she wasn't interested and also kept changing the subject. The problem is, unless the response to concerns such as hers is ‘Yes, you’re completely right, all your problems are caused by immigration,’ the respondent is dismissed as not listening/ignoring the concerns/treating people as if they are thick.

I am so depressed about the whole JKR debate and the way she is being treated by so many people who should know better. She would be a worthy winner for sure.
