Why does 'wokeness' annoy people so much?

twwindow · 27/12/2021 20:18

Isn't it just trying to make the world a better place but making people feel accepted no matter their race, gender etc?

It seems to wind some people up so bad - and it's usually those that are part of a majority group that gets wound up most by it (usually white/men) - is it because they feel threatened?

Whenever anyone stands up for a cause they are automatically called woke - and it's now as if it's a bad thing.

It's sad, I see people fed up with 'wokeness' as code for 'we can't get away with our racist, sexist BS anymore as people are calling us out'.

OP posts:

*"More importantly, distancing ourselves from J.K Rowling will cement the sport and community as the inclusive space it already is. Since our inception the inclusion of all persons, regardless of race, sex, gender identity, or background has been a cornerstone of our sport.

We cannot continue to call ourselves quidditch and be associated with J.K Rowling while she continues to make damaging and hateful comments against the many transgender athletes, staff, and volunteers who call this sporting community home."*

Sorry, who are these sad tossers?? I didn;t think quidditch was even real...! Confused

"They're happy to malign her with lies and to steal the creation that she imagined and the terms she invented."

Also they aren't stealing anything. Great emotive use of language there.

@ItsLouisSangersFault Here's my example of woke. I have neighbours, young couple, who have recently had a baby. I was invited over to see the new addition and mum is expressing in another room so dad does the introductions. Everything is presented by him, before baby arrives "they're" pregnant. No, she's fucking pregnant you twat, men can't get pregnant.

Mum is expressing so HE can be included in feeding the baby. Expressing is fucking hard work when the baby is not actually feeding. He also explains that mum has flat nipples so it doesn't really make sense for her to feed the baby.

I sew and wanted to make a romper for the baby. Hadn't made it yet so took the pattern to show them what I was going to do. Baby is a girl with a name that's a 'thing', like strawberry or cherry so I was going to buy fabric with the 'thing' on it. Nope, we're dressing her in gender neutral clothes so dad wants it to match his grey denim boilersuit (he makes everything from recycled, recycled toilet paper) so the baby looks like him.

Meanwhile, mum has entered the room and the poor girl looks like she's been dug up after a shit labour and emergency section but all he fucking cares about is the gender neutral baby clothes.

So my woke example here is that this woman's needs, health, experience, privacy (why is it acceptable for him to talk about her nipples and stitches to next door neighbour?) are all being trumped by his need to be included because it fucking looks good.

Also, why does he need to tell me all this? Because he thinks it makes him look progressive. The reality is she looks miserable because her female/mother/woman experience of giving birth has been snatched away by a man who's an utter twat.

As said, " Cancel Culture" appears to be a very broad term invoked when ever people are criticised. Its used to deflect against what they are being criticised for.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 28/12/2021 00:01

@VladmirsPoutine

Being cancelled was Dave Chapelle's intention. It wasn't an adverse incident which nearly destroyed his career. Quite the opposite.
I agree, in fact seems to be the aim or consequence of a lot of people claiming to be '' cancelled '' - say you're being cancelled and find yourself in the likes of big mainstream media outlets such as the Daily Mail and spoken about even more. Job done.
GoatInCaptivity · 28/12/2021 00:01
@GoatInCaptivity

So Canceling someone is merely criticising them, or a business withdrawing support from them because their views aren't in line with the views of the corporation?

Chapelle was never cancelled. He's performing on NYE.

It appears not to have stopped lots of people from agreeing or criticising them.

Cancel culture is often thrown around by certain groups when they get criticised in order to deflect the critique of what they are saying.
You've completed missed the point of my post.

To try again, the fact that attempts at cancelling two very high profile people have not been wholly successful does not mean it was without cost.

People witnessing their treatment have been cancelled through fear of being the recipients of such tactics.

We will never know how many voices have been silenced in that way.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/12/2021 00:02

Isn't JK a near-billionaire who lives in a Scottish castle? If that's being cancelled then can I please get cancelled before the New Year!! Rent's due on Friday and I'd really appreciate it if I could be settled in my shiny castle before then!!

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:03

"People witnessing their treatment have been cancelled through fear of being the recipients of such tactics.

We will never know how many voices have been silenced in that way.?

So what you really mean is: " I can't give an example of someone who has been cancelled, so I'm going to make up hypothetical people who may or may not have been silenced".

NoNotMeNoSiree · 28/12/2021 00:04

Exactly vladimir she's very vocal with her views and still extremely successful and rich, hardly cancelled Grin

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/12/2021 00:06

Vlad you'd like the death threats too, then?
You're not normally like this, hope you're okay.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:06

Jordan Peterson is another one who claims to have been the victim of cancel culture.

Except he has a new book, book tours, gets on loads of TV programmes.

Its really lucrative this being cancelled.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 28/12/2021 00:06

Sorry, vladmirs didn't mean to spell your name wrong, that'll teach me to type without looking at spelling first!

ShrillSiren · 28/12/2021 00:08

The fact that they can't completely cancel and erase JKR because she's too big is what really pisses them off.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/12/2021 00:08

@NoNotMeNoSiree Nae bother!! You see! I'd slot right in in the highlands! Grin

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:08

"Vlad you'd like the death threats too, then?"

Lots of people in the public eye get death threats.

The Tory MP who is seeking to change the GRA gets them all the time from those lovely feminists who are just seeking to protect the rights of women.

Its funny isn't it that people on different sides of the debate get targeted.

I haven't seen anyone complaining here that Caroline Noakes is getting cancelled.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 28/12/2021 00:09

@FlibbertyGiblets

Nobody is saying they'd like death threats, stop trying to bloody twist things. They're beyond awful, of course they are and nobody's said otherwise. Just that she's hardly cancelled! Just like others saying they are then springing up in the Daily Mail, on morning telly etc. Yeah, so silenced.
JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:09

@ShrillSiren

In no way has she been cancelled.

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:10

John Cleese complained of getting cancelled, but did it to himself, to generate publicity for his documentary on cancel culture.

Im not making up hypothetical people.

There are many, many people who have been silenced - just look at Lia Thomas's swim team who've been told not to speak to the media as a recent example.

foxgoosefinch · 28/12/2021 00:12

The whole "she's rich so it's A-okay to tell lies about her and send her death threats" argument isn't the progressive gotcha that some people seem to think it is.

In fact, it does sound really quite like - well - exactly like - the hypocrisy of the virtue signalling faux-progressive set that we have been pointing out on this thread.

ShrillSiren · 28/12/2021 00:12
@ShrillSiren

Not from lack of trying though is it?

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:13

You are making up hypothetical people.

Lia Thomas has followed all of the rules set by the governing organisation.

She has only been competing in this academic year.

The first complaints and media attention have come in that first term of the academic year and it got out to the media pretty dam sharpish.

But hey the got "cancelled"

They didn't.

NoNotMeNoSiree · 28/12/2021 00:14

foxgoosefinch
One example please of anywhere on this thread that someone has said it's A OK to send death threats?!
It hasn't happened.
(Feel free to prove me wrong though)

JohnHuffam1812 · 28/12/2021 00:14

"The whole "she's rich so it's A-okay to tell lies about her and send her death threats" argument isn't the progressive gotcha that some people seem to think it is."

The need to create a strawman to try to destroy others arguments exposes just how poor your points are,

No one has said death threats are ok, just the JK Rowling is not cancelled.
