Brought a lovely stuffed pork joint for Christmas dinner. Weighed it, worked out cooking times. All going great! Apart from the fact it weighed 1.5kg and I worked out the timings for a 2.5kg joint!

It was black, eyes were watering from all the smoke. It was ruined! Once dh aired the kitchen and we could all breath again we could have a laugh about it. The kids even used it as a excuse for needing two puddings as they would be so hungry lol

@Frauhubert

Yes. The oven broke just as we put the turkey in. It stopped heating at all.
Yup. Same here. It's been a bit temperamental the last couple of months, randomly cutting off, but yesterday, it would not switch on. Panic stations as 12 guests coming for dinner. Oven only two years old (crappy new build house quality!)

Tried all the resets in the manual, nothing worked.
Eventually switched it off at the isolator switch for 10 minutes, then switched it back on, it came on long enough to cook what I needed and then died again.

Thankfully I had also bought a 'mini counter-top oven' before Christmas day to have extra oven space, so I had that to fall back on but nowhere near enough space to cook for 12.
New oven on the list now!

Christmas Eve afternoon ds managed to cause all the dinner plates to fall from the cupboard and smash. Luckily we have a posh set and weren’t having guests for Christmas dinner as dh tested positive on a lateral the day before.

mangowithasqueezeoflime · 26/12/2021 12:48

@Lacedwithgrace

DD decided to smear chocolate into our brand new cream carpets after she creeped downstairs at 5am to open all of her presents thinking we wouldn't notice...

A glass pendant light above our dinner table exploded, covering all the food and our plates. Had to have christmas pud and picky bits instead.

Found out I'm pregnant though, which is less of a disaster!

Well, that turned it around! Congratulations

Did you not smell.ut? See how brown it was looking when you put the veg/ stuffing whatever else you prepared for the Christmas meal? Sorry , got to go with yabu on this one.

@ShiteChristmas

A less cheerful one - a much loved pet has become rapidly unwell since the evening of the 23rd. Suspected brain tumour. Still a relative baby. She still seems to want to eat but has seemingly forgotten how. With swift treatment we could maybe buy her some more time but all suitable vets are closed for the hols. We’re doing our best to keep her comfortable. Not really a cheerful household today...
Have you got a PDSA close , they are open year round for emergency treatment
Shallwegoforawalk · 26/12/2021 14:46

@mrsbyers the pet poster says she's not in the U.K. and has tried all vets nearby

I am so sorry,it must be a very sad xmas for you.my heart goes out to you.I hope your pet is comfortable for however long she will be with you.Flowers

We did end up getting to an emergency vet yesterday (they were the one place that was at all willing to see her, but didn’t stock any of the medications used to treat pituitary tumours in rats).

After getting advice from online groups, we cajoled them into prescribing steroids, to try and get her through the next couple of days until our regular vets reopen.

She’s now had two doses of steroids and we’re trying to keep her fed and hydrated. Hopefully we can get her into our regular vets tomorrow.

Best case scenario is a mini recovery and palliative care for 3-6 months. The ‘good’ news is that she’s unlikely to be in pain.

It’s particularly hard because, of all the rats we’ve ever had, she’s the most affectionate with people. Follows you around the place, wants to sit on your lap and groom your hands. Loves a cuddle. Also very playful, loves doing her spin-around trick and chasing feathers on string, like a kitten. Barely a year old. Rats have short lifespans at the best of times but this is a real gut-punch.

Thank you to everyone who posted replies.

Oh looks like I posted the pic - I’d given up trying. She’s the black and white one. That pic is of her cuddling her adopted rat mother when she also became unwell (eventually passing) early this year.

Turkey was fucking raw. Don't know what DH did do but cook that bird he did not.

We have Christmas "lunch" at tea time so were serving up at 5.30 or so. We had to eat everything else as it was going stone cold, meanwhile DH was muttering crossly about cooking times and fan vs non fan temperatures. The bird was carved an hour later just about done.

karalime · 26/12/2021 17:33

I hosted Christmas for the first time.

Had originally planned to do curry since we all love it but decided to play it safe and go for a more traditional dinner. Forgot to add more liquid to the soup starter when reheating so it was like mashed parsnips.

Did ham in cola but think I had the heat too high when I finished in the oven, was very meh.

Bloody waste of time trying to do all the traditional things, so much time and effort for something that isn't even that nice. Going to do curry or steak next year.

desperate4spring · 26/12/2021 17:36

9yo DD spent all day vomiting with some kind of bug. Twas lovely.

Crayfishforyou · 26/12/2021 18:14

I didn’t realise we had run out of washing up liquid until Christmas morning.

BoredZelda · 26/12/2021 18:27

Surely you smelled burning long before it was at the smoke filling stage??

WarmSeaSwimmer · 26/12/2021 18:41

Autistic teen became overwhelmed and refused to come out of his room to see visiting grandparents for Christmas dinner. Grandparents were very upset and didn't understand at all, they blamed us for it and didn't stop making unpleasant comments throughout the whole afternoon. Their lack of understanding and nastiness was very upsetting.

ThinWomansBrain · 26/12/2021 18:52

Ordered a friends' gift on amazon - then realised I'd had it delivered to me instead of her.
reordered - decided I'd like a copy as well, so would keep the first copy for me; I thought it was odd that is was predicted to take a week to arrive, but it turned up a couple of days before the break.
I sat down to look at mine on Christmas morning. It's in Dutch, as is the copy delivered to my friend. Xmas Hmm

Could he really not have managed even if not for the Full meal. I can understand why gps were upset.

@RedHelenB many people with ASD can’t manage to do things just because this is the social expectation

Sending you Flowers @WarmSeaSwimmer my dc with ASD was upset today

And @ minimoomoo1711

What you need is a meat thermometer, Ds2 bought me one last xmas, its got a big probe that goes in the thickest part of the meat, the lead on it comes out of the oven and plugs into a magnetic unit that sits on the edge of the hob, it tells you what temp you need for what type of meat and bleeps when it reaches the correct temp so you know its cooked. I love it, its taken all the guesswork out of meat cooking and perfect results every time.

@MissHavershamReturns Thank you for your kind support. 💐
It's very difficult for those that don't live with ASD to understand.

So sorry Flowers

Flamingdinosaur · 26/12/2021 19:51

Our kitchen ceiling fell in as we were putting our daughter to bed, seems a pipe moved or something and there was water gushing in. Letting agents are closed, we left a VM for them when it happened yesterday, heard nothing back. Thankfully I work in a hotel and my manager just told us to stay there no charge until we could at least get electric sorted. Hopefully next year will be better! Hmm

turquoisetoad · 26/12/2021 20:10

3 out of our 4 teenage DC tested positive for Covid. I've just recovered from it. They're isolating in their rooms. All been a bit weird and shite really.

2bazookas · 26/12/2021 20:55

@olivehater

Had to carry my 3 year having a huge melt down out of a small busy restaurant under my arm, with the whole restaurant watching.
Everybody there was thinking " thanks for taking her out and not ruining all our meals". Gold star for your good behaviour if not DC's.
