Any one else had a Christmas disaster!

Brought a lovely stuffed pork joint for Christmas dinner. Weighed it, worked out cooking times. All going great! Apart from the fact it weighed 1.5kg and I worked out the timings for a 2.5kg joint!

It was black, eyes were watering from all the smoke. It was ruined! Once dh aired the kitchen and we could all breath again we could have a laugh about it. The kids even used it as a excuse for needing two puddings as they would be so hungry lol

My post should have read
Dogs ate the pigs in blankets

Onehotmessiah · 25/12/2021 23:13

I popped my non alcoholic posh cidery type bottle into the freezer fir ‘ a few minutes’ to chill. Forgot all about it until it exploded.

Just me and my 11 year old daughter ( only child) as my mum passed away in August at 84.

Let’s just say my darling daughter had many presents under the tree but still managed to be ungrateful and tell me that I got her the wrong “hair curler” as it wasn’t the right one and called me a idiot, yes she is 11.😬

That was it for me, so I took the hair curler and put it back in its box then put a sticky note on the front saying ( unwanted present, please take, merry Christmas x) and put it outside my gate and it was gone within 15 mins..
So somebody appreciated it which is all that matters as my daughter didn’t as she is a spoilt child but that’s another story.

Merry Christmas everybody
Xx

We’ve run out of mixers

Duchess379 · 25/12/2021 23:18

@Frauhubert

Yes. The oven broke just as we put the turkey in. It stopped heating at all.
Nooooooooo! What did you do? 😳🎄
Shallwegoforawalk · 25/12/2021 23:18

@avamiah well done you! I hope she's learned a lesson today!

DixonD · 25/12/2021 23:25

@ShiteChristmas

any vets will see smallies. Even to put to sleep (sorry),. Hope your little one is comfortable in the meantime Then why are so many of them lying to me?
This is true in the U.K. It may be different where you are; so don’t feel that you are being lied to - it’s unlikely!

I hope your baby holds on until you can get her to your vet.

brownbear201 · 25/12/2021 23:28

DP's parents turned up today for Christmas Dinner with gifts for all the kids except one. DS1 got 2 gifts, DS3 got 2 gifts, DD got 2 gifts, DS2 got nothing. Turned out they'd meant to give DS1 1 gift and DS2 1 gift but accidentally gave both to DS1.

Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but I felt absolutely awful for DS2! Sad

avamiah · 25/12/2021 23:34
@avamiah well done you! I hope she's learned a lesson today!
Well she was shocked that’s for sure but as for learning her lesson only time will tell.
I actually blame myself for her behaviour as she has had it far too easy.

We’ve gone to the one emergency vet that is willing to examine her, but unfortunately they don’t have any of the meds she needs in stock (I tried proving that brand names too - no success but thank you for trying).

An online vet suggested steroids to get her through until our regular vet opens. Hopefully they’re willing to administer that but they keep making clear there’s not much they can do to help as they’re unqualified when it comes to exotics.
Our rat (Mei) has steroids too, they helped a bit but not as much as the other drugs, which apparently help combat the effects of hormones produced by the tumour.

What country are you in? (if you don't mind saying) It seems very unfair that they don't have knowledge of rats when so much animal experimentation is done using rats. In the uk rats are also classed as exotic, even though news articles about rats as pests are usually accompanied by a picture of a rat looking very like Mei, but vets always seem to know at least a bit about them, and are willing to try.

That ratshackforum website seems to be international, so you could try asking if anyone knows the brand names of the medicines in your country.

Has gone fine all day. Then a friend called an hour ago and said she and her DH have positive LFTs tonight. I went to see her yesterday morning for over an hour (we all had negative LFTs at that point).

I guess my parents will be going home first thing in the morning tomorrow just in case I'm incubating. They were staying another day but I'm grateful for the time we had. I've only seen them 3 times this year, and about that for the last 2 (Covid last year, and DSis had cancer the year before and DM was helping to run her life between treatments). It's a buggeration more than a disaster though.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 25/12/2021 23:57

My sister who has mental health issues AND a bowel disease ( colitis) has been dropped off here by the police to stop her attacking the neighbours who bully her (( to be fair, they do))

The colitis is relevant. Because the amount of alcohol affected her meds, meaning she was throwing up from one end and spraying shit from the other.....I ended up skidding on vomit whilst holding an empty quality st tub filled with sick in one hand and a pair of shit filled knickers in the other.

She's now cleaned up and asleep. Im cleaned up and catching up on soaps, all the alcohol is locked outside so I'm hoping for a peaceful night.......merry, fucking Christmas. WineXmas Biscuit

longtompot · 26/12/2021 00:01

My dss gf phoned to tell him she is positive for covid on a lat flow. Two tests. She tests every day for work and had been clear. She was devastated as our yd is cev but she has done everything right, so nothing to be sorry for.
Ds thought he might have to spend his whole cin his room, but with some distancing and window opening we mostly spent the day together.

ShiteChristmas · 26/12/2021 01:39

@fluffedup

After some advocating on our part, the emergency vet has given us steroids. Hopefully that will buy time until an actual vet with meds opens. Obviously best-case scenario is a few more months, but we’d take that at this point.

Cheeseplantboots · 26/12/2021 02:02

Stood the beef on top of the kettle as we were rapidly running out of worktop space, the blood dripped off the plate, into the socket and everything went bang ! The oven tripped out and panic ensued!

Woods52 · 26/12/2021 02:28

We had a fire. Dinner candle fell over and set alight some faux greenery and decorations in the dining room just as we were serving up. I was in the kitchen and walked in to see flames up the wall, DP screaming and the top of the sideboard on fire.

Took several wet towels to extinguish (even when we managed to chuck everything outside in the rain), but we were lucky. No one hurt, just mildly traumatised and the house stinks.

Rest of day ruined really. My fault for trying to create some Pinterest inspired Scandi style ‘ambience’ bollocks with candles etc. I’m such a dickhead.

The only one of us who enjoyed the day was the dog who, whilst we were frantically trying to extinguish the fire, just casually walked in, nicked a load of the Turkey from the table and proceeded to tuck in as if nothing was happening!!

So yes: please NEVER leave a candle unattended, even for a second!

And fingers crossed for a better Boxing Day😬

polkadotpjs · 26/12/2021 02:57

My day was nice but my son just threw up
I'm hoping I've not poisoned anyone with my dinner 😭

Joystir59 · 26/12/2021 07:50

I will not allow candles in the house after causing a house fire with one. Ridiculous that they have not been banned imo.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/12/2021 07:56

@Woods52 your dogs a legend!.

We had a Bengal cat so candles were out of fashion for years here due to Bengal naughtiness.

dottiedodah · 26/12/2021 08:05

Very pleased with myself indeed. Lovely big fresh turkey. Haven't cooked Xmas lunch for a few years. Anyway got it out to remove foil .fell out of roasting foil tray thingy .fat and juice everywhere! Cleaned up and ds helped me with pots veggies and the rest .managed to salvage it luckily had landed foil side down. Had a laugh later on

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 26/12/2021 08:19

Underestimated the challenges of taking puppy away with us for Christmas
At home he has long periods of sleeping and being settled as long as he is walked and fed
Here he is a hyped up overstimulated nightmare constantly whining, barking (never does at home), chewing stuff up, jumping up etc etc. just too many new people and places and he cannot settle despite having his crate in a quiet place, chews etc.
I knew we'd have to constantly supervise him but I did not reckon on the intensity. Teen DD and I have both been in tears over the relentless awfulness of it and DH said his Christmas has been ruined as it's like having a toddler again (which it is)
Lesson learned. Will not be trying to go and stay anywhere else for a long time.

badlydrawncat · 26/12/2021 08:20

Last May in a fit of optimism, we booked to spend Xmas in southern Spain. We cancelled it a couple of weeks ago because I'd the uncertainty around Omicron + dp was due to start back to work the day after we returned. We booked a shorter Airbnb break in the UK instead. Isolated but scenic. Different scenery, different walks, just cozy up in a different place. We arrived on 23rd, the heating wasn't working, we had one wood burner to heat a 3 bedroom barn. Heating fixed Xmas Eve morning, but broke again Xmas morning. Luckily we'd bought extra logs the day before to supplement what the Airbnb supplied or we'd have been knackered because we'd both had a drink by the time we realised and the nearest shop is a 20 minute drive. It's cost us £40 to heat the downstairs room over 2 days, not to mention the constant attention this temperamental woodburner needs. I've spent the last couple of days swathed in merino base layers, alpaca jumpers and a wooly shawl.

We're packing up today and going home 2 days early, to whole house warmth and being able to sit and enjoy it. Actually, not really a disaster in the great scheme of things, I'm sure we'll laugh about it lots in the next few weeks.Xmas Smile

Bunnycat101 · 26/12/2021 08:26

Meant to be travelling to my parents today and one of the children has projectile vomited everywhere. I’m just gutted as haven’t seen them for ages and was looking forward to a bit of a break. Instead am washing sheets and trying to clean the carpet.

MerryChristmas21 · 26/12/2021 08:50

@Christmaswrapping1

Today's disaster was I dropped the entire beef gravy all over the stove when DD3 came running for a cuddle.. Took 5 bastard hours to get those gravy juices. It was gone in 3 seconds. Luckily i had some bisto in the cupboard.
@Christmaswrapping1

Luckily it didn't go all over DD3!!

GarkandGookin · 26/12/2021 10:41

Not a massive disaster but the mashed swede that was part of our Christmas lunch was only discovered in the (cold and open) oven about half an hour ago. Looks like bubble and squeak for tea Blush
