Any one else had a Christmas disaster!

Brought a lovely stuffed pork joint for Christmas dinner. Weighed it, worked out cooking times. All going great! Apart from the fact it weighed 1.5kg and I worked out the timings for a 2.5kg joint!

It was black, eyes were watering from all the smoke. It was ruined! Once dh aired the kitchen and we could all breath again we could have a laugh about it. The kids even used it as a excuse for needing two puddings as they would be so hungry lol

@DramaAlpaca

Me too and DH didn’t even notice - phew
honeylou42 · 25/12/2021 19:21

Yes Husband tested positive 😞

2catsandhappy · 25/12/2021 19:23

@crackofdoom can you try the half bucket of warm water trick? Always worked for my house. Good luck! xx

MrsMagnum · 25/12/2021 19:24

I couldn't find frozen sprouts and chestnuts again this year so bought them fresh to do myself. Scored them, as instructed, but some of them still exploded in the oven. The 3rd one was so violent it blew the oven door open while I was stood next to it. Feel lucky it didn't do any damage so I'm counting it as a minor set back that could have been much worse. Although cleaning the oven of millions of fragmented bits of chestnut before the turkey went in was a pain!

Sleepyteach · 25/12/2021 19:25

Toddler DD refused her Xmas dinner and when I’d finished mine threw up on me 😭 so our Xmas visit to the in laws came to a rather abrupt end at half three this afternoon.

tarasmalatarocks · 25/12/2021 19:25

Been in pain since 19th Dec as slipped over on wet decking and smashed my wrist and bruised my coccyx. Trying to do lots of jobs one handed and in pain isn’t good— I’ve had lots of help but even things like getting dressed and going to loo are awkward and painful — and I don’t feel cheerful

Bigbouncingbaby · 25/12/2021 19:29

I put the oven on but forgot the turkey … just sat on the side . Rung my kids at their dads who were unhappy as he was grumpy and wanted to come home 😢

crackofdoom · 25/12/2021 19:29

2catsandhappy yes, I think the bucket of hot water will be the first thing to try. The second is a plunger apparently, which we don’t have. The thing is that I’ll have to empty the bowl first, including DS2’s “offerings” (boak)

maddening · 25/12/2021 19:30

Got my period, in agony lying down with hot water bottles and gin 🤣

UnsolicitedDickPic · 25/12/2021 19:34

I prepared and delivered Christmas entirely on my own (again) but for the final year with my shithouse exDP. I ended things a few months ago but wanted to do the right thing for DD this year so invited him, but he's been doubly miserable and useless.

Next year I'm going to book a meal out just for just me and DD and fuck everyone else.

Bluntness100 · 25/12/2021 19:36

Not disastrous but I promised cinnamon buns as part of breakfast and when I looked at the box at about nine this morning, it was bake your own, Inc 90 mins proving time, and a whole baking from scratch thing, so they are still in the cupboard. We will do them tomorrow, 😂

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/12/2021 19:36

@Staryflight445 Never to early to learn not to literally throw your toys out the pram.

@ShiteChristmas

A less cheerful one - a much loved pet has become rapidly unwell since the evening of the 23rd. Suspected brain tumour. Still a relative baby. She still seems to want to eat but has seemingly forgotten how. With swift treatment we could maybe buy her some more time but all suitable vets are closed for the hols. We’re doing our best to keep her comfortable. Not really a cheerful household today...
I'm so sorry. We lost both our guinea pigs this year. One died in February suddenly and her sister two weeks ago. She'd been behaving strangely, wouldn't come to see me and didn't want her food. She died in her sleep later that day Sad
ShiteChristmas · 25/12/2021 19:38

Shite, you really don't need an exotics vet for a rat I promise, rats are normal patients in practice, all vets will have an out of hours team at work today and christmas day is often very quiet for them as everyone thinks they are closed and then boxing day is crazy busy. Ive worked christmas lots, one year we had someone whose dog broke their leg on christmas day and they assumed wed be closed and left them till boxing day before they rang which is horrendous! You can ring them anytime.
I tried ringing our regular vet yesterday and left voicemails, but they are closed.

Their voicemail provides a couple of phone numbers for emergency vets.

I called those vets and they advised that they couldn’t help, but they gave me numbers of other emergency vets.

I tried them too, but they also said they couldn’t help (one could provide meloxicam for pain relief, but we already have her on that).

I’ve spent hours calling every vet I can find, within a several hour radius. No success.

Wasn’t there any indication at all it was on its way to burning before it got as bad as it did.

@thehillswerebright

We have dinner in the livingroom, my husbands chair leg snapped and he fell back smashing the tv. The tv that was borrowed from my parents because ours is away getting the back light thing fixed (only a week out of warranty 😡) so that's me £350 down on the day already 🤦‍♀️
Would your home insurance not cover this? X
ShiteChristmas · 25/12/2021 19:42

Perhaps the laws are different in the UK, but I had a lengthy chat with the one emergency clinic who were willing to provide meloxicam, but they said (1) none of their vets are qualified to diagnose rats, and (2) even if they were, they don’t have any of the compounds used in the treatment of pituitary tumours in stock.

Pinkchicken85 · 25/12/2021 19:44

Husband is trapped in france. I came over to England a few days before him and before the boarders shut with our kids.

Very sorry , sometimes Folk forget how much a beloved pet is part of the family x

Had a really tricky few months with dd age 9 who is about to be dx with HFA and really struggling. She doesn’t know why yet but understands she’s different. We have talked a bit about being neurodiverse but can’t obviously say definitely what it is until she has the dx. We celebrate her as she as and talk all the time about differences in a positive way.

We had had a lovely day out on Xmas Eve as a couple as my lovely dm hosted dd for a special day 1:1. When we came home dd was excited about all she’d done that day and for Xmas and we had a nice afternoon and evening.

Just before bed we were talking about her Xmas hopes and she told us both she was really hoping Santa could give her a “normal vaccination” as she would more than anything else like to be normal just like everyone else. That was number one on her list.

We told her how wonderful she is as she is and that we adore her. But after she went to sleep I sobbed for a good long while Sad So crap that she feels like this.

Helpimfalling · 25/12/2021 19:46

I made all the roast potatoes a bag and a half.

Peeled par boiled, lovingly turn
And fluffed and crisped for an hour in the oven.

Put them into the microwave covered in silver foil.

Been very
I'll with corona so went
To do some other bits catch up and maybe a sit down.

Go back half hour later.

Sons ate them all!!

Apparently a bit too salty for his liking!!!

Mydogmylife · 25/12/2021 19:47

@DramaAlpaca

I forgot to put the sprouts on.
Bonus surely ?
Twatforaneighbour · 25/12/2021 19:48

DD tested positive for covid last night, there went all of Christmas and potentially new year plans if we get it too. At least the kids have lots of new toys to play with to keep them occupied

StayHoHoHome · 25/12/2021 19:48

We tested positive so couldn't go to families as planned for Christmas, dh really unwell with it so he's been in bed almost all day. I've had no Christmas dinner, no games, and I'm pregnant so no booze! It's definitely not felt remotely like Christmas. I had a little cry I must admit. I was so excited after last years going to pot with the restrictions.
