Any one else had a Christmas disaster!

Brought a lovely stuffed pork joint for Christmas dinner. Weighed it, worked out cooking times. All going great! Apart from the fact it weighed 1.5kg and I worked out the timings for a 2.5kg joint!

It was black, eyes were watering from all the smoke. It was ruined! Once dh aired the kitchen and we could all breath again we could have a laugh about it. The kids even used it as a excuse for needing two puddings as they would be so hungry lol

My Dad died in January , with Covid restrictions we couldn't travel . I phoned him on Christmas Day to remind him The ChaseCelebrity Special was on ( he loved a quiz show )

I spoke to Mum today but it seems so strange now not to have a natter with my Dad .

ShitChristmas if you give him the Loxicam will he let you just cuddle him, maybe in a towel ? I've never kept rats but had many guinea-pigs and some I've cuddled in their final hours , peacefully .

My DH has tested positive with the PCR , DS had a positive LFT and waiting on PCR results . Both feel pretty rough . Hot , achey , cough etc
I cannot taste much .

And looks like 3 of our lights are kapoot ( not the bulbs , the fittings , so yay will need that sorted )

Just a bit of a meh day .

A less cheerful one - a much loved pet has become rapidly unwell since the evening of the 23rd. Suspected brain tumour. Still a relative baby. She still seems to want to eat but has seemingly forgotten how. With swift treatment we could maybe buy her some more time but all suitable vets are closed for the hols. We’re doing our best to keep her comfortable. Not really a cheerful household today...
Sending love. Thinking of you x

Also less funny but trying to see a funny side - no one to spend Xmas with so went to local pub, open 12 midday til 3. Made the mistake of wearing a nice (but not revealing) dress, pub manager told me I was asking for it, when I said no to him, pushing his hand down my pants, forced me out the door with his hand round my throat telling me I was barred. Went to local Spar to get milk, in a tizz about pub so left my keys at home. Got let in by housemate after 3 hours in the pissing rain later. Still haven't eaten anything all day. Happy Xmas everyone!

Not a disaster really but I forgot to take the pigs in blankets out of the freezer last night. Tbh I wouldn't have had any room for them. Near disaster just half an hour after dinner our electric went off. Just our estate. Neighbour had her meat cooked but not the veg and family were due to arrive. Back on now so hopefully they are now tucking into their Christmas dinner and never has a cup of tea tasted so good.
Just can just cook them from frozen for 45 mins
SockFluffInTheBath · 25/12/2021 20:37

@Looubylou no, I learned to put chocolate up after my last dog raided the Christmas chocs off the coffee table (she was fine, thankfully but dropped wrappers round the garden for a few days afterwards). DD cheerfully announced she had the shits an hour ago, and DH has a sore tum, so it looks the culprit is some halloumi sticks that were part of last nights buffet dinner.

SockFluffInTheBath · 25/12/2021 20:38

@ShiteChristmas that’s so sad, your poor ratty.

She’s normally a real cuddler (very affectionate rat, has been besotted with us from day 1) but she seems to want to be on her own at the moment. Did have a long cuddle yesterday.

CherryHug · 25/12/2021 20:47

My washing machine packed up and flooded my kitchen on Xmas Eve. Thankfully ordered new one to come Monday but bloody lucky to be able to do so.

Halsall · 25/12/2021 20:49

@iklboodolphrednosedpaindear. I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. My dad died two days before Christmas (years ago now) and we lost my mum late last year - it's doubly hard at this time somehow. Sending you very best wishes.

This sounds terrible.I’m so sorry. Do you have no-one you can tell or call the police?

@ShiteChristmas is this pet a rat?

Our rat has a pituitary tumour which makes them go floppy, have problems balancing and eating. It can affect them rapidly.

I did some googling and found that a substance called cabergoline is supposed to help. I told our vet who put her on a medicine containing cabergoline, called Galastop, normally used to stop lactation in dogs. Within hours she felt better and she is pretty much normal now, just a bit weaker and fatter.

There is another substance too which can help called bromocriptine. I found this info on www.ratshackforum.com.

Whatever your pet is, I hope your vet can give them something to help.

notanothertakeaway · 25/12/2021 20:56

@Floundery

Autistic DS refused all food except Pringles with gravy for dinner. Then threw the gravy at the wall and twatted DH. He’s been up since 2am, which won’t have helped.

I’m reading the LA’s local offer for boarding schools with DH.

I’ve had better Christmases.

@Floundery

That sounds tough

Icantrememberthenameoftheartis · 25/12/2021 20:57

Left Christmas cake at in-laws so no cake. A tiny disaster but I do love Christmas cake at Christmas.

Son, turned 3 a week ago, opened every present and threw it on the floor if it wasn’t a dinosaur and said ‘I don’t like it’ I stopped him opening any more presents I felt so bad for family sitting there watching him open their presents.

fluffedup · 25/12/2021 20:58

@ShiteChristmas
Just seen that your pet is a rat.
Go to the website www.ratshackforum.com and google 'managing a pituitary tumour - experiences with cabergoline'. There are also lots of other threads there with advice on pituitary tumours as it seems to be very common.
Our vet didn't know about cabergoline either until I showed them the printed-off thread then they suggested Galastop which isn't normally used for that purpose. If you are not in the uk they may not have that exact medicine but they should be able to suggest something containing cabergoline.

jennybluetree · 25/12/2021 21:01

No there isn't a funny side to this, you need to call this out and report it to 101

NothingIsWrong · 25/12/2021 21:15

11yo thought his sugar mouse in the stocking was a candle and lit the tail. Had to chisel melted sugar mouse off the table. Very minor disaster.

woodhill · 25/12/2021 21:22

I burnt the sprouts as I hadn't noticed there was no water in the pan itms

Fucking hell. I thought my broken washing machine was a disaster as nothing I can do about it today or probably tomorrow (bought brand new in August so under warranty at least) but jovial you really need to report this.
Pumpkinstace · 25/12/2021 21:29

After dropping 4dc off at other parents houses this afternoon it was just me and dp for dinner.

We fell asleep and only woke up an hour ago.

Dinner will be ready at 11 30pm.

@fluffedup

Thank you. When we spoke to the emergency vets they told us that they didn’t have those meds in stock but we didn’t know the galastop brand name so will try again.

GettingItOutThere · 25/12/2021 21:48

@ShiteChristmas

All vets will have an emergency line - if you ring the surgery you should get through to the on-call receptionist. The pet in question is a rat so needs an exotic vet. We’ve tried every emergency vet within a 4 hour drive (not in the UK) and none can see rats. Have to wait for our regular to reopen but i don’t know that she’ll make it/
any vets will see smallies. Even to put to sleep (sorry),. Hope your little one is comfortable in the meantime

@OnwardsAndSideways1 thank you 💐

@justlikejasper yes it was.

@iklboodolphrednosedpaindear so sorry for your loss 💐

bananabuddy3 · 25/12/2021 22:04

Some insanely salty roast potatoes.

Uncle cooking. He puts salt in the water, and he did as usual. My dad then keeps an eye and decides to salt them too (he also does this normally and didn’t think to check if they already were salted).
Uncle asks BIL to prepare the baking dish for the potatoes. Unaware of the double dose of salt, BIL adds salt to the fat at the bottom.
I do the final load. I normally add salt as they are about to roast so I got out the rock salt and put it over the,m.

Holy cow. That was funny.

Communicate with your other guests and let one person see a cooking job through.

Oh that's really awful. Really hope you can buy a little more time if your Pet will benefit.

So sorry. Are there no emergency vets in the area? ..it will cost a bomb, as Christmas, but IF you have insurance, it might be doable?
