Any one else had a Christmas disaster!

Brought a lovely stuffed pork joint for Christmas dinner. Weighed it, worked out cooking times. All going great! Apart from the fact it weighed 1.5kg and I worked out the timings for a 2.5kg joint!

It was black, eyes were watering from all the smoke. It was ruined! Once dh aired the kitchen and we could all breath again we could have a laugh about it. The kids even used it as a excuse for needing two puddings as they would be so hungry lol

Today's disaster was I dropped the entire beef gravy all over the stove when DD3 came running for a cuddle.. Took 5 bastard hours to get those gravy juices. It was gone in 3 seconds. Luckily i had some bisto in the cupboard.

ThriceNope · 25/12/2021 19:52

DH and I both up in the middle of the night with no warning, taking it in turns to projectile vomit and poo - bathroom is a massacre! Needless to say Christmas Day was cancelled so turkey still in the fridge, presents still under the tree.

After a horrible year of things going wrong, operations and illness this has been the cherry on the cake - can't wait to see the arse of 2021!

daretodenim · 25/12/2021 19:52

We're isolating after DD positive (not remotely ill).

Skyping with family at dining table, cleared other than candles. Fluffy cat walks on table, sets tail on fire.

It was properly on fire - flames. After the initial shock (I had no idea how flammable fur was - never had reason to think about it) I leapt across to him, grabbed him and put it out. His fur is so long it didn't have time to burn his skin, thankfully. So he was stressed for about 15 mins but is actually fine.

Took the rest of us longer to recover.

Family thought we were pranking them! Had to explain that no, it really was an emergency and we really did feel absolutely awful.

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 25/12/2021 19:58

@EthelMerman big hugs to you, that must have been really upsetting. Brings you up short. Hope you can enjoy today.

Joystir59 · 25/12/2021 19:58

Cooked the sprouts to perfection, forgot to serve them!

The4thThe5th · 25/12/2021 20:02

Forgot to get the the sausagemeat out of the freezer to make the stuffing, so we had no stuffing with our Christmas dinner Sad

Fredstheteds · 25/12/2021 20:04

@ShiteChristmas

A less cheerful one - a much loved pet has become rapidly unwell since the evening of the 23rd. Suspected brain tumour. Still a relative baby. She still seems to want to eat but has seemingly forgotten how. With swift treatment we could maybe buy her some more time but all suitable vets are closed for the hols. We’re doing our best to keep her comfortable. Not really a cheerful household today...
Really sorry to hear this- bad enough but horrible when young.
NigellaBangBangTurkey · 25/12/2021 20:05

Beige gravy and dry beef. Was still better than superworm

@iklboodolphrednosedpaindear

Dad died on Thursday. We don't really feel very Christmassy.
Flowers i am so sorry for your loss xx
Concestor · 25/12/2021 20:06

@DramaAlpaca

I forgot to put the sprouts on.
I cooked ours but they were ready a bit early so I put them aside then forgot to serve them!

Not disasters exactly, but I have a rotten cold (yes, just a cold), DH is shattered as the kids were up at 1am pissing about. I didnt hear them as I sleep with ear plugs in. So we're both not having the fun, active, family xmas we hoped for.

But, we're powering through with the help of alcohol, redbull and paracetamol Xmas Grin

RicherThanYew · 25/12/2021 20:11

Cold Yorkshire puddings, freezing cold meat, no cranberry or mint on offer and an unwelcome non-friend or family member being a nuisance on the phone as they had no Christmas plans!!!

MyCatHatesPCRTests · 25/12/2021 20:12

@daretodenim, I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m
making light of your cat’s plight but that sounded like something from a comedy sketch! Is s/he ok now?

Our oven decided to pack up five minutes before I was about to put the meat in. Thank God it was a) a tiny boned rolled turkey crown, and b) that the top single oven was working. But that is usually combined with the grill and it was really smoky every time I opened the oven door, and then I set it to grill mode for the pigs in blankets after everything else was out. I still have a sore throat.

DC1 epically lost his shit after a couple of disappointments (Christmas present batteries failing faster than they should, etc) and effectively spoiled dinner. Next time it’s just us, I’m doing nice oven bits from Marks.

DC2 has Covid.

I think DH has Covid but he is accusing me of being a nag as he doesn’t have any of the main symptoms and his lateral flows are negative. I still think he has got it. He is about a step away from The Dressing Gown of Doom stage and I am tempted to stick a lateral flow test somewhere the sun doesn’t shine.

I now have wine and the DCs are in bed but I would have happily sacked it off from about 1400 today.

Tanfastic · 25/12/2021 20:13

Not exactly a major disaster but paid to go out for Xmas dinner for the three of us as I've cooked for the latest fifteen years and thought it would make a change. It was crap. Walked into complete chaos, tables of people walking out, tons of people waiting to get fed who'd been waiting two hours just for a starter. We did eventually get our starter and main course but we didn't fancy staying another hour for the pudding and coffee so left. Absolute waste of money, never again.

beenthereboughtthetshirt · 25/12/2021 20:13

4 dozen homemade Paul Hollywood mince pies and apple pies - some of which were intended for gifts.

If anyone's in need of some ice hockey pucks these would be ideal....and just about as tasty.

shivermetimbers77 · 25/12/2021 20:13

I tested positive for covid in the morning but felt ok so carried in and managed to make greasy roast potatoes and burned the sprouts. Still got trifle to come so hoping that will be ok!

MyCatHatesPCRTests · 25/12/2021 20:13

Also, my entire extended family are having a lovely time without us for the third year in a row due to reasons plus Covid, and we should have been there this year too.Sad

Lovemusic33 · 25/12/2021 20:14

@Floundery

Autistic DS refused all food except Pringles with gravy for dinner. Then threw the gravy at the wall and twatted DH. He’s been up since 2am, which won’t have helped.

I’m reading the LA’s local offer for boarding schools with DH.

I’ve had better Christmases.

Sorry your days been tough, I have had days like this with dd and often look into residential only for her to be as good as good for a week making me change my mind. Christmas is always tough.
nitsandwormsdodger · 25/12/2021 20:14

Gave my son covid Xmas eve

MadgeRussell · 25/12/2021 20:15

DD's hamster has died and we've had to hide it from her as didn't want to ruin Christmas for her :-(

JustLikeJasper · 25/12/2021 20:20

@EthelMerman was that on the A1 in Hertfordshire by any chance?

Clevs · 25/12/2021 20:20

My mum used a whole jar of goose fat for the roast potatoes. When I saw them swimming in it and said it was probably a bit much she decided to tip some out. Except it went all over the kitchen floor instead of the bowl she was trying to pour it into 🤦🏼‍♀️

I then spent twenty minutes on my knees mopping it up with kitchen roll, washing with hot soapy water and then wiping over with a floor wipe and it was still a bit slippy in places.

Wildernesstips · 25/12/2021 20:22

@crackofdoom try pouring a bit of neat washing up liquid down and leaving it. It usually works a treat.

So sorry for some of you on here - some very sad stories.

Looubylou · 25/12/2021 20:27

SockFluffInTheBath - your dog hasn't had chocolate or Christmas pudding has it? My neighbours dog started like that after secretly eating toblerone - it progressed to seizures. If it's disoriented or off balance, I'd contact a vet ASAP.
